A Family History
Too often, when artists pass away, their work dies with them. When my father passed away in 1988, I decided I would do what I could to keep his memory alive. He was a great pianist and composer and I shall attempt to present some of his music on these pages.
My mother was a poet and sculptor, an amateur in the truest sense of the word, and I shall present some of her work here too.
Alfred Mira, a good friend of the family, (My Father's Manager) and a portrait artist in Boston, MA. will also be featured here. Get ready to enjoy sights and sounds never before displayed on such a scale. I thank Geocities for this opportunity. As this site is under construction...please try to be patient.

Haydn arrives in England . . . MUSIC PLAYED ON TODAY'S PROGRAM:
Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809): Symphony No. 92 in G (Oxford)
Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra; Adam Fischer, cond.
Nimbus 5269 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Here's an excerpt from a letter Haydn sent from London to a friend back home in Vienna describing the crossing the channel to Dover and his first impressions of the British capital: "During the entire crossing I remained on deck, in order to sate my eyes with that monstrous animal, the sea. So long as there was no wind, I was not afraid, but finally as the wind grew stronger and I saw the high unruly waves breaking against the ship, I felt a little alarm, and with it a little nausea. However, I overcame it and came safely into the harbor without vomiting. Most of the other passengers, however, were sick, and looked like ghosts. Even so, I took two days to recover, but now am quite brisk and merry again, and am looking at London. The vast city quite amazes me by its various beauties and wonders. My arrival made a great stir all over the town. For 3 days I was bandied about in all the papers. Everyone is curious to meet me. I have already been obliged to eat out 5 times, and might be invited every day if I would, but have to consider my health, not to mention my work!" ALSO ON THIS DATE:

Nicolas Slonimsky Collection (ML31.S6)
The Nicolas Slonimsky Collection was acquired by the Music Division of the Library of Congress from Slonimsky in 1969 and, after his death, from his daughter Electra Yourke in 1999. A number of monographs on a variety of musical topics and mostly published in the twentieth century accompanied the Collection. Those that were not hitherto part of the Library's collections have been classed and cataloged as ML31.S6 and cited on the Library's online public access catalog (OPAC). Books of which the Library already had multiple copies were transferred to the Library's Exchange and Gift Division; the title pages of each were photocopied and are filed in the Music Division's Slonimsky Collection Processing File. In addition, a large collection of Soviet periodicals and pamphlets on music, including

http://www.classical-composers.org/html/scriabin_bio.html
Alexander Scriabin (Aleksandr Skriabin) was born 25 December 1871 in Moscow. His mother died when he was two, and he was then raised by a grandmother and his Aunt Liubov. He began formal study of the piano at 12 with Georgy Conus. In 1884-85 he studied piano with Nikolai Zverev, at whose house a small group of piano pupils boarded, including 11-year-old Sergei Rachmaninoff He entered the Moscow Conservatory at 17, studying piano with Vasily Sofonov. He learned theory with Sergei Taneyev , and was in Anton Arensky 's composition class where classmate and friend Rachmaninoff was Arensky 's star pupil. Ironically, Arensky once threatened to flunk Scriabin who was musically somewhat too adventurous for his teacher. In 1892, Scriabin sought to graduate a year early like Rachmaninoff but was refused by Arensky, whereupon, enraged, Scriabin quit and set out on a career as a concert pianist and recitalist. In 1897 he married pianist Vera Ivanovna Isakovich, The following year, Moscow Conservatory piano professor Paul Schloezer died, and Scriabin took his place. By 1902, the Scriabins had three daughters (Rimma, Elena, and Maria) and one son (Lev). During this time, he became interested in Goethe and Nietzsche. Then, in 1903, he left his post at the Moscow Conservatory. At the same time, he began an extramarital love affair with Schloezer's niece, the seductively attractive Tatyana Fyodorovna.

PART I: KOCHAÑSKI'S LIFE AND MANUSCRIPTS
1. Biographical Sketch
2. Overview of Collaborations
3. Manuscripts and Career
110 years after his birth Polish violinist Paul Kochañski is remembered mostly for the technical assistance he gave composer Karol Szymanowski; however, the violinist collaborated with other important composers as well. Patterns in the type of work habits and attitudes which Kochañski brought to these collaborations are suggested by examining the violinist's endeavors in the following steps: (1) a biographical sketch outlining Kochañski's professional importance and qualifications including (2) an overview of his collaborations, (3) the relationship between the violinist's personal manuscript collection and his career, and, in the second part of this paper, (4) connections between the collection and Szymanowski's violin writing of 1915-16, (5) Kochañski's work habits and (6) attitudes as reflected through the collection, as well as (7) conclusions offering insights into his collaborative work.
