It is the beginning of a new school term, and troubles are starting for Simon. He falls in love with Roxane, a very mysterious new student. Is her father a crook? Then Simon's idol, the celebrated singer Marc Macadam, disappears. Simon, who is learning to play the guitar to become as good as Marc Macadam, is concerned. Is there a link between the two problems? Fortunately, Simon and his friends are curious and resourceful, and everything is explained in the end. Young readers will enjoy this funny and fast-paced story with its sympathetic characters.

NANCY HUSTON
PARIS: GALLIMARD JEUNESSE , 1998, 47 P. (COLLECTION PAGE BLANCHE) ISBN 2070515699 AGE 14 AND UP She is 14 years old, and is unaware that her life is going to be transformed this summer, which seems just like every other one she has known. Life moves slowly in her small village in western Canada. Then one day, she meets a young pianist who upsets her existence by introducing her to the world of black music. From the first notes, the first chords, she feels transported. The rhythm of the music opens an unknown universe that speaks of a different life. She is moved and overwhelmed by the beauty of this song, by the strange mixture of sadness and hope which it conveys. This is a touching book about a young girl's sensual awakening. The reader has the feeling that the entire narrative is a hymn to life, propelled by the music of words. More mature readers in particular will enjoy this novel of passage to adulthood.

By Charles Taylor Music Review Jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson takes on Pink Floyd, Ravel. By Philip Booth I nterpretation of scenes By Daniel Mangin May 21, 1999 B ernardo Bertolucci describes "Besieged" as a "piece of chamber music for the cinema," the Italian director's way of acknowledging a sweep less operatic than that of previous works like "The Conformist," "Last Tango in Paris" and "The Last Emperor." Old habits die hard, though. "Besieged" unfolds on the surface as a duet between two dislocated souls, but Bertolucci can't resist working many of the psychological, sociopolitical and personal themes of his larger projects into this supposedly simpler composition produced for Italian television. The strategy at once expands on the film's source, a short story by James Lasdun, and diminishes it. Besieged Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci Starring Thandie Newton and David Thewlis At the film's outset an African woman named Shandurai, played by Thandie Newton, flees her unnamed country after its military arrests her husband. She lands in Rome, where she enrolls in medical school, supporting herself by tidying up after an eccentric English musician who becomes intensely infatuated with her. Mr. Kinsky (David Thewlis), as Shandurai always calls him, can't just come out and tell her he's mad about her. Via the dumbwaiter that connects their living quarters a townhouse he inherited from his aunt he shuttles cryptic gifts: a question mark on a blank sheet of music paper, an orchid, an heirloom ring.

Simone Guiducci Welcome to AAJ! New to Jazz? Building a Jazz Library History of Jazz ... Jazz Humor Concert Posters Label Profile Fresh Sound Records
By Phil DiPietro A simple, yet incredibly intriguing question stimulated me to pursue a label profile for the remarkable Fresh Sounds, New Talent , jazz label. That is, why is the vibrant New York City small-group jazz scene being documented by a label out of Barcelona? Until recently, I was under the assumption that they were US based. I confess, my familiarity with the label was limited solely for a time to my first dose of one Kurt Rosenwinkel (" East Coast Love Affair " (FSNT-016)), who received a well-deserved boost in worldwide notoriety through his subsequent association with Verve. Of late, I was fortunate enough to interview Kurt's contemporary and successor in Paul Motian's electric bebop Band, Mr. Ben Monder. Ben records under his own name on Arabesque and Songlines, but pointed me, (and the rest of you) after some prodding, to a few of his noteworthy appearances on Fresh Sounds, including Chris Cheek's "A Girl named Joe" ( stupendous), The Gorka Benitez trio (FSNT-073-fantastic), Bill McHenry's "Rest Stop" (FSNT-033-superb) and Reid Anderson's " The Vastness of Space " (where I must pause to gather up myself).

Thursday August 30 FRANK EMILIO FLYNN, 80 : Blind pianist Frank Emilio Flynn has died in his home town of Havana. With the Symphonic Orchestra of Havana, he performed music of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven which had been transcribed into Braille. He was best known, however, as a pioneer of Latin jazz. Nando Times (AP) 08/29/01 Tuesday August 28 BASICALLY BARENBOIM: Conductor/pianist Daniel Barenboim has had a controversial year. Prodigiously busy musically, he's also been embroiled in spats from Berlin to Israel. Though critics increasingly pick holes in his musical interpretations, "he remains one of the most discussed musicians of our age — not least because, among his Protean gifts, is a talent for stirring up controversy that borders on genius. That is evident from the battles he has fought over the past few months." The Times (UK) 08/28/01 SCHNABEL, 92:
