Through his interpretations of Satie, Reinbert de Leeuw has earned a national and international reputation. In the Holland Festivals of 1973 and 1974, he collaborated on the programmes of the Stichting Eigentijdse Dans (Contemporary Dance Foundation) of Koert Stuyf and Ellen Edinoff, in which Satie's music had an important place. In 1974, he took part in a Satie programme in the Warsaw Autumn Festival. In the late 1970's he performed in a series of concerts of twentieth-century music, in which each concert is devoted to a particular theme. Reinbert de Leeuw was born in Amsterdam in 1938. He studied piano and music theory with Jaap Spaanderman in Amsterdam and composition with Kees van Baaren in The Hague. He currently teaches at the Royal Conservatorium in The Hague. Besides his work as a pianist he is also a conductor and a composer. His better-known compositions include "Abschied", a work for symphony orchestra, and he was also one of the composers who collaborated on the opera "Reconstruction". He has published a book on Charles Ives, in collaboration with the writer J. Bernlef, and also written a series of articles entitled "Muzikale Anarchie", which appeared in the Dutch cultural magazine "De Gids". In recent years he has made new recordings of Erik Satie, released by Philips Classics, and performed the music in the widely appreciated movie "Satie and Suzanne - The Passion of a Lifetime", a Veronica Tannent ballet performance.

AndrewWilson emails:
"You don't list de Leeuw's analogue 3 CD set, "Early Piano Works", Philips 426 444-2. This is still in the catalogue, and the individual volumes are also available separately."
Asked to compare old and new:
"Well, they're both slow... I've not compared them back-to-back, but I think they're quite similar. I must say that I feel that they work at this pace. I'm sure that I'm influenced by this being one of the first Satie records I ever bought."
Gnossiennes Ogives Sarabandes rec 1995 From Gramophone Feb 96, Christopher Headington Tender, solemn, droll, silly and occasionally plain boring, Satie's piano music has certainly proved its appeal for performers and record collectors, judging from the number of recitals devoted to it. But this one is out of the ordinary, for unlike the majority of artists, who offer a mixed bag of pieces, Reinbert De Leeuw has chosen music that is entirely solemn and even hieratic in utterance. He begins with the archaically beautiful Gnossiennes , taking the first of them unusually slowly, but with compelling concentration. The composer's devotees will be thrilled, though you have to surrender completely to get the message of this repetitive, proto-minimalist music.
