Het MonteVideo Toonbeeldklavier Op 22 maart a.s. zal Jaap Dercksen, pianist van De Volharding, in Plaza Futura zijn eerste compositie van eigen hand uitvoeren. In zijn stuk bespeelt hij een nieuw instrument, een toonbeeldklavier. Bouwer is Shaun O'Neil, technicus van MonteVideo/Time Based Arts, een Amsterdams kunstencentrum dat initiatiefnemer is van het Europees Laboratorium voor de Kunsten. Het toonbeeldklavier speelt videobeelden van Eddie Duinkerken, Enschedees kunstenaar. Waarom een toonbeeldklavier? En hoe werkt het? We kunnen ons dat nu moeilijk voorstellen. Ieder theater, hoe klein ook, heeft een lichtorgel, sinds een jaar of tien bijna zonder uitzondering computergestuurd. De relatie tussen licht en muziek zit in onze genen. Een popconcert zonder zee van licht is geen popconcert. In de klassieke muziek staat niemand ervan te kijken als Olivier Messiaen in de onlangs uitgezonden documentaire van Cherry Duins beweert dat een E majeur-accoord rood is, hoewel het wel gek wordt gevonden. De interviewer, Reinbert de Leeuw, liet Messiaen er niet over uitpraten. Maar Jaap Dercksen ging het niet om kleur. Hij had enkele jaren geleden een paar (video-)films van Eddie Duinkerken, een Enschedese kunstenaar, gezien en was daardoor geraakt. Met shots van een druppelende kraan, een slaande deur, vallende regen, brekend glas e.d. maakte eddie d, zoals hij zich bij voorkeur noemt, korte, ritmische videofilms, die klonken als muziek en eruit zagen als stukken uit Haanstra's film Glas. Soms duurde een shot een paar seconden, maar vaker niet langer dan enkele fracties van seconden. Alleen, een videofilm is een opname die je afspeelt. Dercksen wilde geen opname maken, maar een concert geven. Hij vroeg zich af of het mogelijk was 'videobeelden van eddie d te spelen'. Het verbazingwekkende is dat dat bij de huidige stand van de techniek eigenlijk niet kan.

But our major music organisations still managed their share of on-stage triumphs, writes Peter McCallum. First the Ploughshares-into-Swords Award, which this year goes to the Federal Government for a recently reported review of arts funding. Speculation at the time was that more money was needed for oil wars and offshore detention. The project allegedly struck problems, however, when it was discovered that having gone to the 1996 election with a promise to end elite arts funding (would we prefer non-elite artists?), the arts budget was now insufficient to pay for the lavatory door signs on a Collins-class submarine (Brendan Nelson helpfully pointed out that the funds still going to universities might make up the difference). Meanwhile, Opera Australia strikingly misread public opinion in its announcement not to renew the contract of musical director Simone Young. It seems no one on the board had noticed that this internationally successful young Australian had re-energised the company and the public (just as Richard Tognetti did with the ACO more than a decade ago). Finding a new musical director will not be a problem, but capturing the public's bruised hearts and roused minds will be. Everything possible should have been done to make sure that she was a two-termer. Artistically, however, the company's 2002 season was bold. The winter season leapt to life with Francesca Zambello's provocative production of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Great performances from Elizabeth Connell and Natalie Jones made Thea Brejzek's richly imaginative staging of Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos blossom where previously it had fallen short. Weber's Der Freischutz, once a stalwart of the repertoire, had oddly never been produced by Opera Australia, a situation remedied by an adventurous, if troubled, production from Christine Mielitz. Two very different works were notable for their dramatic impact: Neil Armfield's haunting staging of Britten's The Turn of the Screw and Moya Henderson's new opera Lindy. The latter silenced the scoffers by exceeding box-office targets, attracting new listeners and introducing a promising new voice to this country's operatic mainstream.

Het festival November Music is gestart in 1993 met meer dan vijftig concerten, workshops, lezingen in twee landen, vier steden en op zesentwintig lokaties. Reeds vanaf het eerste festival staat de doelstelling centraal om muzikale grenzen te doorbreken. Diverse genres ontmoeten elkaar en binnen de programmering worden vele dwarsverbanden gelegd. (Teldec New Line) Zijn rijke Britse vriend Vincent Meyer, de dikke deur van het Philharmonia Orchestra (het onbetekenendste van de vijf orkesten in Londen) zorgde voor het geld, maar stelde ook als voorwaarde dat er, indien maar even mogelijk, met mensen uit zijn stal zou worden gewerkt. Dat moest op den duur wel verkeerd aflopen. De bom barstte bij cd-uitgave nummer acht, de opera Le Grand Macabre, die in Salzburg een klein relletje veroorzaakte, toen bleek dat Ligeti zich absoluut niet kon vinden in de enscenering van Peter Sellars, mot kreeg met dirigent Esa-Pekka Salonen, en dat hele Philharmonia Orchestra naar de duivel wenste. Einde Ligeti Edition, wat jammer was, want er lagen nog veel prachtstukken op een definitieve opname te wachten. Twee jaar bleef het stil. Toen kwam het nieuws dat de Ligeti Edition aan een 'doorstart' was begonnen, onder een andere titel en bij een andere platenmaatschappij. Op Teldec New Line verscheen zojuist de eerste aflevering van The Ligeti Project (opnieuw opgedragen aan Vincent Meyer), met daarop drie stukken die tot evenzovele hoogtepunten in Ligeti's oeuvre kunnen worden gerekend: Melodien voor orkest, waarin de componist een duizelingwekkend web weeft van kleurige contrapuntische lijnen, het Kammerkonzert, dat zich als een opgevoerd mechanisch uurwerkje ontrolt, het fraaie Pianoconcert, met veel gezag uitgevoerd door de Franse pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, en als toegift het krankzinnig virtuoze Mysteries of the Macabre voor trompet en ensemble, waarin solist Peter Masseurs van het Concertgebouworkest de show steelt.

Festival Highlights to NOVEMBER 1999 A Celebration of INTERNATIONAL NEW MUSIC Building on the success of the 1998 Festival, the 22nd Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival will feature music by composers under 50, plus music from the Netherlands and from the Pacific Rim. The Arditti String Quartet will be resident to celebrate their 25th anniversary. This outstanding ensemble will, amongst other things, lead masterclasses, discussions and workshops for the Yorkshire Arts Young Composers' Award . Manchester-based Psappha , also in residence at the Festival, will showcase works by young composers. Ensemble Recherche return to present the UK premiere of Georges Aperghis's Passive Resistance. Inspired by the paintings of Paul Klee, this piece of music theatre will have its world premiere as part of Musica Viva in the Marstall Theatre, Munich. The make their first appearance at the Festival with pianist Reinbert de Leeuw presenting Compositions I, II, and III by Russian composer Galina Ustvolskaya. The music of Louis Andriessen will be featured by Beppie Blankert's Dansers Studio . Double Track, an intriguing piece of dance, based on text by Samuel Beckett and involving mirror and video.
