Dick Hyman - For almost fifty years it has been common knowledge in the entertainment business that the person to call for whatever kind of music you need is the pianist-arranger-composer-organist Dick Hyman. Computerized in Hyman's brain, instantly transferable to his fingers, is every popular piano and organ style that has ever been played in America, historically correct to the year when it was in vogue. He can also replicate note for note, the style of all the American giants of jazz piano in this century, from the intricate rags of Eubie and the galloping stride of James P. Johnson to the urgent bebop of Bud Powell and the introspective lyricism of Bill Evans. Send an e-mail to Rob Bamberger Selected Sources for the music heard on Hot Jazz Saturday Night WAMU Programs: The Diane Rehm Show The Kojo Nnamdi Show The Computer Guys The DC Politics Hour ... Special Productions An inquiry to those who care to comment... I was intrigued by Deborah Tannen's column in the Post Outlook section (January 5) on the rapid pace at which the younger generation are speaking, and the surfacing of this characteristic on television as well. A few years ago, a listener wrote me that one could compose a movement of a symphony between my pauses. (The listener attributed this comment to a friend of his, but I knew better.) Of course, the kind of rapid patter that Dr. Tannen is noting is not a desirable goal, but I'm wondering if others feel as this one listener did: Do I talk too slowly on the air? Should I try to brisk it up maybe a little bit? Now to the program notes!

Dick Hyman Sorry.....no larger view of these photos at this time It's hard to pin down keyboardist Dick Hyman, but there's no reason to believe he'd want to be classified, anyway. At a time when swing and bop were at loggerheads, he worked with the leaders of both movements. Although he's dedicated to presenting early jazz pianists' compositions, he was one of the first to experiment in electronics. Hyman was born in New York on March 8, 1927. He received a BA in classical piano from Columbia University, and studied with Teddy Wilson after winning lessons in a radio contest. During the late '40s and early '50s, Hyman performed with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Lester Young. He worked with Red Norvo for two years beginning in 1949 and with Benny Goodman in 1950. Throughout much of the '50s, Hyman was a studio musician and staff pianist/organist for NBC. While Hyman started leading his own trio in the '50s and '60s, he recorded honky-tonk tunes under different names. Along with recording the complete Scott Joplin, Hyman transcribed Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong and James P. Johnson years before many jazz historians recognized the need for writing down these works. In a 1973 Down Beat Blindfold Test with Leonard Feather, Eubie Blake said of Hyman's rendition of Johnson's "Harlem Strut": "You just can't play that way, that's all there is to it! Boy! That's vivace ... I've never heard anything like that; the technique!" Hyman formed jazz repertory groups that featured such veterans as Pee Wee Erwin and Milt Hinton in the mid-1970s. He also wrote for such bandleaders as Count Basie and continues to lecture and present jazz festivals in New York. But his dedication to history did not prevent him from exploring the music's future. His 1969 record

Stride! Piano.com Jim Turner Jim and Eddie Turner JIM TURNER is a stride pianist from Los Angeles whose style is faithful to tradition, but not old-fashioned.
Turner has performed for audiences in concerts and jazz festivals throughout the West from San Diego to the San Juan Islands in Washington, and in New York City. For 16 years, he was a soloist at the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Festival. For 27 consecutive years including the year 2001, he was featured at the always sold-out Old Town Music Hall Ragtime Festivals in El Segundo, California.
Turner has appeared as a soloist at jazz and ragtime festivals in Los Angeles, Pismo Beach, San Diego, Reno, Boulder, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Friday Harbor, Washington. In 1997, he was a featured artist at the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, Missouri, for the third time. He has performed as a featured pianist on the famed riverboat The Delta Queen on the Mississippi River.
Jim Turner recorded his first solo album in 1981. Entitled Old Fashioned Love A Tribute To James P. Johnson (Euphonic Sounds ESR-1222), the recording received unanimous critical acclaim. Jazz Report magazine stated, "Only words
like finesse, surety and brilliance will do." The Rag Times wrote "Some of the best stride playing on record."
