Lucky Review of the 11/4/99 performance of "Dames at Sea" The cast worked very well in the 1930s musical style, showing off their singing and dancing skills. Robin Navlyt's character, Joan, has her song highlights in "Choo Choo Honeymoon," where she does some really cute dancing with Lucky (James Paul Xavier), and "Good Times Are Here To Stay," a spirited number the ensemble uses to close the first act. There is a song for every emotion and dilemma, in true MGM fashion. Joan gets most of the zinger lines, usually directed at Mona (Janice Schuss), delivered with the perfect sidekick-gal feistiness. Robin's character is still chipper and good-hearted despite her meager existance in "The Jungle" of Broadway. She provides good contrast and support for her new friend, Ruby, whom Beth Frazier embues with the squeaky-clean, wide-eyed innocence expected in a girl from Utah. Beth's singing voice is clear and strong, but even she can be outsung by Hank Florence, who strolls through the role of Dick with the deliberate ease and manic energy of a young Danny Kaye, his voice ringing solidly off every wall in the place. A drama coach would use him as an example of "How to project to the BACK of the theater." He, too, brims with wholesome goodness, so he's a perfect match for Ruby.

A ragtime pianist is someone with a distinct style that not only colors the way he or she plays rags, but also the way they apply that style to non-ragtime material and convert it to ragtime. Dick Zimmerman is the only pianist on this list that has a firm grasp of this concept. SMELT (Osnierus eperlanus; Fr. ~perlan; Scotch sparling or spirling), the common small European fish of the genus Osmerus, family Salmonidae. It breeds, unless land-locked, in salt or brackish water, and though it often enters rivers it does not ascend beyond tidal influence. Like other British Salmonids it spawns in winter. The true smelt inhabits the coasts of northern and central Europe, and allied species are known from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America (Osmerus mordax, 0. thaleichthys, 0. Japonicus). In the next year, another pseudo-Smerdis, named Vahyazdgta, rose against Darius in eastern Persia and met with great success. But he was finally defeated, taken prisoner and executed (Behistun Inscr. ~ 40 if.; perhaps he is identical with the King Maraphis “the Maraphian,” name of a Persian tribe,who occurs as successor in the list of Persian kings given by Aeschylus, Pers. 778). He was the eldest of eleven children left, on their father’s death, to be supported by their mother on slender means. To her spirit and example must be attributed some of the enthusiasm for selfreliance and self-education, that ‘was later embodied in Dt Smiles’s writings and led to their popularity and influence.
