‘A’ Is For Amphonic 70s Kid takes a look at the famous library music imprint and its founder, and speaks to Amphonic’s managing director, Ian Dale. Syd Dale - a name instantly familiar with collectors of library, funk and easy listening LPs of the 1960s and 1970s. For those who don’t recognize the name, it is very likely they will have been exposed to his work; his music from this period continues to be used extensively on TV and radio. It is also a name intrinsically linked with the Amphonic music library. One of Britain’s foremost composers and arrangers, Syd founded Amphonic Music over thirty years ago, to provide the TV, film, radio and advertising media with music that covered all bases, produced to the highest possible standards. The company’s reputation as one of Britain’s major suppliers of ‘library’ music was quickly established with the release of Big Band Sounds Of Today , the first LP Amphonic issued. Its success was helped in no small way by Syd’s contributions as composer. The first release showcased the qualities that would come to define the Amphonic ‘sound’: intricate arrangements, an emphasis on melody and harmony, crystal clear recordings and first class musicianship. Ain't Misbehavin' (Fats Waller/Andy Razaf/Harry Brooks)
One of the classics. This sequence was taken from the original sheet music.
Ain't Misbehavin' (Fats Waller/Andy Razaf/Harry Brooks) Here's a very playful (not to mention incredibly acrobatic) Art Tatum interpreting another genius of the ivories, Fats Waller. After You've Gone (Creamer/Layton; Art Tatum, arranger) Listen to the rhythmic patterns and the subtle half-tone modulations that only Tatum could do. Alligator Crawl (Fats Waller) The piece begins with a strong left-hand statement and then moves into a series of wonderful "Wallerisms." From the original sheet music. As Time Goes By (Herman Hupfeld; Donald Lambert, arranger) Lambert, nicknamed "Muffin," "The Lamb" and "Jersey Rocket," was a great pianist who hasn't gotten the credit he deserves for some outstanding work. This arrangement of "As Time Goes By" is a case in point. He challenged and defeated Eubie Blake and Willie "The Lion" Smith in a cutting contest at the Piano Workshop of the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival. He once even asked Art Tatum to step into the ring. All of this, without being able to read a single note of music. Bill Bailey (Hughie Cannon; Dick Wellstood, arranger)

    94. Festival Hall -- Where The Muses Are Heard
We couldn't wait until it was pristine and perfect, says james dick, a concertpianist and the founder and motivator behind The International Festival
    http://www.texas-ec.org/tcp/1001music.html
    October 2001 issue FESTIVAL HALL
Where the Muses are Heard By Elizabeth Hudson Like a Gothic manse rising from the landscape, the Round Top Festival Concert Hall dominates the horizon for miles in Fayette County. Music motifs grace the gabled windows that line the massive roof, the building a centerpiece of the 200-acre campus devoted to the study of classical music. Despite the splendor of the pastoral grounds-the renovated historic homes and church, fountains and gardens 80 miles east of Austin-nothing quite prepares the visitor for what lies ahead. For inside the building is a magnificent performance hall of tremendous visual and acoustic beauty unrivaled in Texas and perhaps in the country. The interior of music hall is every inch wood, intricately carved in gothic designs, stars and swirls across the ceiling, along the box seats and up and down the walls. Soft lights cast a golden glow on the polished wood throughout the hall.
And never mind that the 1,100 seats are plastic lawn chairs on a bare cement floor, a stark contrast to its surrounding richness. Such details are forgotten once the strains of an orchestra begin, establishing the acoustic superiority of wood.

    The Music of Benjamin Lees
    Summer 2002
Universal Praise for New Recording of Benjamin Lees Piano Concerto No. 2 - Piece is Available for Performance by American Orchestras

Albany Music has released a fabulous and important new recording of Benjamin Lees' Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Albany Symphony Orchestra, David Alan Miller, conductor, and a strong advocate of Mr. Lees' music, pianist Ian Hobson. It's catalog number Troy 441 and you can find more about it at the Albany site - http://www.albanyrecords.com/ Albany Records' Peter Kermani said of this release, "The great American composer Benjamin Lees wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2 for Gary Graffman and the Boston Symphony Orchestra who premiered it in Boston on March 15, 1968. It is great to see more and more of Lees' music showing up on disc." American Record Guide agreed with Mr. Kermani in their September/October 2001 issue, saying that the Piano Concerto No. 2 is, "typical of this master composer. Lees always delivers a powerful sense of inevitability; every phrase seems to grow out of the previous one ... Ian Hobson, a heroic advocate for Lees' tough-minded music, plays the hell out of this piece. Both the concerto and performance are very exciting, and alone worth the price of this recording." Walter Simmons wrote in the May/June 2002 issue of Fanfare, "Lees' concerto displays ... meticulous craftsmanship, unwavering focus, clarity of texture and streamlined sense of purpose ... the work inhabits the same driving, aggressive, post-Bartokian/post Prokofievian stylistic realm as most of Lees' music from the 1960s - it is powerful and convincing in its own right..."

document.write(adcode); Early Diagnosis Key to Fighting Alzheimer's Disease
    "I'm having a senior moment."
That's become the half-joking, half-worried statement of aging baby boomers - hinting at the possible onset of Alzheimer's disease. But when does absentmindedness - such as forgetting where you put your car keys - become something for which to seek diagnosis and treatment?
Alzheimer's is an age-related, degenerative brain disorder that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to interfere with everyday life.
Over time, as cognitive and functional abilities decline, people become dependent on others for all their care. Eventually their body functions shut down, and they die.
"People often are reluctant to seek a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, preferring not to know because in the past little could be done," said Elaine Braslow, administrator for the Alzheimer's Disease Program at the Texas Department of Health (TDH). "Things have changed dramatically, and there now is hope and a sense of urgency for early diagnosis of
    Alzheimer's."

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL-INSTITUTE AT ROUND TOP . Concert pianist James Dick established the Festival-Institute at Round Top in Fayette County in 1971. Dick, a performer with a distinguished career, was uniquely qualified for the task of creating a campus and organization to operate one of the major musical festivals in the United States. He graduated from the University of Texas with special honors in piano in 1963 and was a student of pianist and pedagogue Dalies Frantz. Following graduation at the University of Texas, he received two Fulbright Fellowships for study at the Royal Academy of Music in London and private study with Sir Clifford Curzon. Dick also was a major prizewinner in the Tschaikovsky, Busoni, and Leventritt international competitions and represented the United States on the juries of the Tschaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Van Cliburn Piano Competition in Fort Worth. His concert tours take him throughout the United States and abroad each year. qv and its Gothic Revival ceilings and staircases make it a showcase of Texas carpentry. The historic sanctuary of the former Travis Street United Methodist Church of La Grange, built in 1883, was moved to Festival Hill in 1994, for restoration as a center for chamber music, organ recitals, lectures and seminars. The Festival-Institute Museum and Library exhibits its art collections in the Festival Concert Hall and the historic house restorations. The David W. Guion Archives and Americana collection and the Anders and Josephine Oxehufwud Swedish and European Collection, have unique hand-crafted galleries in the Festival Concert Hall. Other facilities have been built to house accommodations, practice, teaching, meeting and seminar rooms for the festival and for year-round programs and conferences.
