Knopf, 1999), illustrated with photographs and maps, 475pp, $31.50 (hardcover). GS#6152 Ordering Information T he First World War created the modern world. A conflict of unprecedented ferocity, it abruptly ended the relative peace and prosperity of the Victorian era, unleashing such demons of the twentieth century as mechanized warfare and mass death. It also helped to usher in the ideas that have shaped our times-modernism in the arts, new approaches to psychology and medicine, radical thoughts about economics and society-and in so doing shattered the faith in rationalism and liberalism that had prevailed in Europe since the Enlightenment. With The First World War The Age of Revolution: , by Eric Hobsbawm, (Random House, Inc., 1996), A Vintage Book, first published in 1962, 356pp, $13.50 (paperback). GS#5562 Ordering Information B etween 1789 and 1848 two vast upheavals-one originating in England, the other in France-catapulted the world into modernity. No one has documented the dual impact of the Industrial and French Revolutions more thoroughly or insightfully than Eric Hobsbawm in this magisterial work, the commencing volume of his epic four-volume history of the making of the modern world. More than a chronicle of momentous events

All-Time Football Movies Listed in chronological order * Recommended * The Freshman (1925)… Harold Lloyd, Jobyna Ralston, Brooks Benedict, James Anderson, Hazel Keener. One of Lloyd's best silent comedies where he plays a college loser (Harold "Speedy" Lamb) out to prove himself worthy. Lloyd runs a close third behind Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin for all-time best silent comic in our opinion. Salute (1929)… George O’Brien, Helen Chandler, Joyce Compton, William Janney, Stepin Fetchitt, Frank Albertson, Ward Bond. Hokey story about a pair of brothers who face each other in the big Army-Navy game. Look quickly for John Wayne in the hazing scene. Filmed partly at Annapolis. The New Halfback (1929)… Andy Clyde, Harry Gribbon, Marjorie Beebe, Bert Swor, Wade Boteler, Patsy O'Leary. The college dean is forced to put his old friend on the football team. The Forward Pass (1929)… Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Loretta Young, Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams, Marion Byron, Phyllis Crane, Bert Rome, Lane Chandler, Allan Lane, Floyd Shackelford. John Wayne was an extra in the film. Maybe It’s Love (1930)… Joe E. Brown, Joan Bennett, James Hall, Laura Lee. Bennett tempts eleven (real-life) All-Americans to play football for her team. Not one of Brown’s better vehicles playing Speed Hanson. The real players include Russell Saunders, (as 'Racehorse Russell'), Tim Moynihan, Bill Banker, Howard Harpster, Ray Montgomery, Otto Pommerening, Red Sleight, Kenneth Haycraft, George Gibson, Paul Scull, Jake 'Schoony' Schoonover. Subject: ACADEMY : Christopher Taylour

From: Lauren Kassell
Dear Penny (and everyone else),
I've always wondered who the 'lady' was. I'm afraid I can't
remember why I thought they were associated it's something
that I've not worked on properly. My notes are brief, but at
some point I thought that there was evidence of an association
between Thomas Robson (alias Feltcher) and Taylour based on MS Ashmole 1492, item 9. Robson was an associate of Napier's. I might be wrong about this. Sorry to be so vague. Your work on Taylour sounds very interesting I'm afraid I won't be able to make it to the seminar in December, but I'd love to see a copy of the paper. All the best, Lauren Subject: ACADEMY : Keren Happuch From: Susanna Åkerman Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 Also recall the double meaning of Keren, horn and ray. This is why Moses is depicted by Michelangelo in Rome and in Trinity College, Cambridge and other such sculptures with two small horns, since when he came down from Sinai the Bible says

THE YEAR 2001 IN SARDINIA - A YEAR OF "ISOLA SARDA" NEWSLETTERS
2001 has ended. Hurray for 2001! It's time to take stock of the past twelve months. The "Isola Sarda" Newsletter, a weekly summary of the most important events occurring in Sardinia, can help us to remember how this past year, which is about to come to an end, has been.
At the beginning of 2001, the news of the moment was the "Mad Cow" epidemic. Luckily, this worrying phenomenon touched our Region only marginally and notwithstanding thousands of inspections, only one case of infection was verified. Unfortunately, however, our Island featured prominently in the outbreak of another infection. Although harmless to human beings, it affected the sheep farms very badly. Tens of thousands of heads of sheep were slaughtered because of the so-called "Blue Tongue Syndrome" and the entire breeding sector was brought to its knees. The vaccination of the animals, which could have at least reduced the damage, will only just be carried out with much delay during 2002.
From a meteorological point of view, Winter and Spring were rather wet. The Island's 40 water basins gathered some rather positive statistics if compared with those recorded during certain drought-ridden years in the past. The real drawback, if these statistics are compared to seasonal averages, was the Autumn period or rather what should have been Autumn and instead ended up being a continuation of Summer. Never in living memory have an October and November been so hot as in 2001, evidently a sign that seasonal patterns are really changing.
