review excerpts
A most delightful artist, with a unique blend of musicianship and showmanship. -National Public Radio 1/00
The most memorable performance was the closer: George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Played to the hilt, it was a magnificent, gutsy performance in which Downes made deft use of pedal to call up the illusion of an orchestra under the main melodic lines.
-The Sacramento Bee 1/00
A stylish force at the keyboard.
-The Miami Sun Sentinel 1/00
Debussy's L'Isle Joyeuse was just that, an island of joy, and Downes gave this work a finely shaded and technically perfect rendition which gave credence to all of the various awards and honors she has received in the past.
-The Santa Cruz Daily 2/00
Downes played the piano themes delicately and sensitively, with a lyricism that was light to the touch and played with confidence. Downes brought the audience to its feet as she brought the work to a close. -The Huntsville Times 2/00 The three Liszt nocturnes revealed unexpected depths, yielding fresh subtleties under Downes' solicitous touch. -The Florida Herald-Tribune 2/99 At the recital of pianist Lara Downes the attendance of the pub-lic was plentiful. The soloist should be lauded for her choice of repertoire, a synthesis of the piano music of the twentieth cen-tury... Beginning with Gershwin's Three Preludes, she brought to this idiom an approach that was at once cerebral and full of "swing", transmitting great lyricism and great capac-i-ties of sonority... In the piano version of La Valse by Ravel, Downes expertly tamed the piano, which seemed an unbridled horse in this wild piece. Her interpretation made the piano version as ef-fective as the orchestral score... The euphoria of the public was evident.

NEWS RELEASE POSTCARDS RECORDS RELEASES LARA DOWNES' INVITATION TO THE DANCE Postcards Records is pleased to announce the release of classical pianist Lara Downes' debut CD, Invitation to the Dance , a collection of solo classical pieces by 19th and 20th century Masters such as Liszt, Weber, Ravel, Chopin and Barber. All the pieces on the CD relate to popular dances of their time; it is a fascinating recap of where we've been on the dance floor over the last 200 years. Invitation to the Dance is the first classical release on the Postcards label since the Arkadia Entertainment Group acquired it in 1999. Under the leadership of Arkadia founder Bob Karcy, the acclaimed electro-acoustic avant-garde jazz label expanded its horizons to include classical and world music. Lara.Downes is the first artist to premiere a recording and the first classical artist as well. "Not many people have what Lara has," says Karcy. "She's an incredible virtuoso, she's funny, sophisticated, intelligent and she looks great too. She could be the next big thing in the classical world." Lara Downes has been hailed as one of the most promising young pianist today, and her choice of repertoire runs from the traditional to the avant-garde. Her recent projects include a Copeland Centennial recital, a newly discovered piano concerto by Clara Schumann, and a four-part recital series entitled This American Century. "I have been intrigued by the interdependence between music and dance" Lara says, "Dance, after all, is music in motion, the physical embodiment of sound." It seems only natural then that she would want to take on a project that tied together the two things she loves most.

NEWS Jazz News 30th March 2001 ECM Records News Marilyn Crispell Amaryllis - CD of the Week
Like running into a relative of somebody you know well, this probing set betrays a gesture here, a mannerism there, a certain chime to a laugh or intensity of glance that is at once familiar and new. At times it's like listening to a Keith Jarrett or Bill Evans trio, but with those pianists' vocabularies eerily rewritten. For two decades, Marilyn Crispell has been one of the most highly regarded pianists at the sharp end of contemporary jazz. This Baltimore-raised musician went to the New England Conservatory to study classical music, and then became diverted by the work of Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane. She eventually became keyboard partner for the fearsome multi-instrumentalist and composer Anthony Braxton, with whom she could share enthusiasms from Coltrane to Hildegard of Bingen....
This set has Crispell investigating a more lyrical and less awesomely pianistic music. Four of the pieces were improvised from the off, but sound like compositions, such is their conviction and clarity of phrasing. The ruminative opening passages, initially draped around Gary Peacock's plummy, luxurious bass sound, reflect the atmosphere of the whole set. Paul Motian, one of the closest things to a sound-painter in the jazz drumming, rustles around Crispell, scattering offbeat snare sounds and brief shimmers of cymbals, occasionally hinting at distantly martial tattoos that cajole and fade.

Subj: tracing a pianist Date: 7/4/01 From: linda...@...demon.co.uk To: PianoWomenEditor Dear Ed, I am trying to find info on a concert pianist from Germany named Ellie Nye (not sure of spelling) , can you help? Have you heard of her? Many thanks Linda Subj: re: tracing a pianist Date: 7/5/01 From: PianoWomenEditor To: linda...@...demon.co.uk Hello Linda, I think you may be referring to: Elly Ney (b. Dusseldorf, Sept. 27, 1882; d. Tuteing, Mar. 31, 1968). She is listed in my page of "Yesterday's Concert Pianists" but without any links, so I haven't found a page of biographical material already on the web to link her to. She is listed in all of the important music biographical dictionaries: Baker, Groves, Riemann, Thompson, etc., and there was an article about her published in FANFARE, Vol. 5, 1982.
