C LASSICAL CDs, Pt. 2 - July-August 2001
Click on each CD cover to go directly to the review *** QUICK AUDITIONS *** We start off with Guitars Galore! = Another thoughtful, unusual and exciting crossover album. The four guitarists come from different genres of music (Di Meola is one of the top jazz guitarists and Summers is a member of The Police), some use some nylon strings, some use steel and some of the them play electric guitars vs. Barrueco's classical acoustic guitar. Some of the 13 tracks originate with the three guest guitarists but others are by Copland, Nazareth, and Villa-Lobos (the last a delightful improvisation on an Etude by the Brazilian composer and titled "Wolfsville" - a backward translation of his name). The different styles mesh beautifully while retaining their individuality. What a kick to kick down the musical fences in this way! SOR: Five Short Pieces; Fantasie; Six Lessons; GIULIANI: Garyowen; 12 Waltzes; Blue Bells of Scotland - David Starobin, guitar - Bridge 9107: Virtuoso guitarist Starobin here presents on his own label a program of works from the two most famous names in guitar performance in the first part of the l9th century. Their efforts in both composition and performance laid the groundwork for the later flowering of the classical guitar under Segovia in the 20th century. Both classical and operatic music were influences on these works, as well as a need to please the tastes of the bourgeoisie with grand waltzes and variations on folk melodies such as the Blue Bells of Scotland. Starobin plays a guitar built in the style of an 1830s Viennese guitar. All the selections are deftly played and cleanly reproduced.

Interview: Benny Golson GARY WALKER INTERVIEWS BENNY GOLSON BG: He's a killer, he's a killer. There's nothing that this man can't do. GW: Dwayne Burno on bass and drummer Joe Farnsworth are featured as well. You also have bassist Ron Carter and pianist Mulgrew Miller and drummer Carl Allen, and Shirley Horn singing. You did the lyrics for "One Day, Forever." BG: Art used to play that particular tune. He played it beautifully, and Shirley does the same thing. GW: There's a tune that a lot of people associate with you, "Killer Joe." It was the first tune of yours that was ever recorded. BG: "Stablemates" was the second. GW: It all started back in Philadelphia, on Page Street. Mr. Coltrane lived on 12th Street. What was it like? You guys were teenagers together playing, weren't you? BG: We absolutely were. It was exciting. It was a time of aspiration and dreaming. We did a lot of dreaming in those days. We had our photographs [of the musicians we admired]. We'd see ourselves in those photographs, hoping. GW: Little did you know that you would be playing with a lot of those people whose photographs were up on the wall.

Student musicians invited to work with renowned composers
Fitz Vo / Aggie graphic By Christina Ribar
Aggie Staff Writer February 05, 2003 - This summer, UC Davis will unveil the Summer Arts Institute, an opportunity for students to work alongside internationally renowned composers and performers. Students ages 10 to 22 are welcome to fine-tune and augment their musical knowledge by receiving guidance in numerous musical genres. The new program will run from July 20 to Aug. 3. The program will be split into two different sections, each two weeks in length. High school and college students considering musical careers are invited to participate in the Apprentice Artists Program. The Junior Scholar Program is focused on providing musical knowledge to children ages 10 to 16. Students in all age groups will work closely with several UCD composers and instructors as well as an acclaimed ensemble and a UCD alumnus. Celebrated composer and UCD alumnus Steve Mackey of Princeton University will be one instructor. A passionate electric guitarist, Mackey was a member of numerous rock bands before composing for orchestras, opera, chamber ensembles and dance. The eighth blackbird , a contemporary ensemble-in-residence at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, will also spend time collaborating and teaching students. The group made history as the first contemporary ensemble to be handed the highest prize at the 1998 Concert Artists Guild International Competition.

Customer Quotes about the Estonia Piano
"The Estonia Pianos that I played at Cordogan's Piano Gallery in Deerfield, IL. USA touched something in me. The feel of the action and warmth and purity of the sound are exquisite. The finish is as perfect as one can find anywhere. I was especially fond of the 5'6" African Bubinga model but I wanted to "graduate" to a larger piano than the one I currently own. I do not know if Mr. Cordogan told you, but I purchased a brand new Yamaha C2 in Satin Oak approximately 18 months ago. I had no intention of buying a new piano when my very good friend Trent Kjell asked me to accompany him to Cordogan's to let him know my opinion of the Estonia he was thinking about purchasing. That is when it happened. Your pianos captured me and would not let go! I played and played looking for a reason not to buy one, but I could not find one. I tried reasoning with myself that I had just purchased a piano and that I should be happy but your piano would not let me rest until I owned one. I decided to trade in my Yamaha C2 at a substantial financial loss.

80. Frederic Rzewski
and piano works that have been successfully performed and recorded across the world;he is also active as a pianist. lara downes, piano (Postcards 2002, 2001).
http://composers21.com/compdocs/rzewskif.htm
he Living Composers Project Rzewski Frederic (b. April 13, 1938, Westfield, Massachusetts). American composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, vocal, and piano works that have been successfully performed and recorded across the world; he is also active as a pianist. Prof. Rzewski studied music at first with Charles Mackey of Springfield, and subsequently with Walter Piston, Roger Sessions and Milton Babbitt at Harvard and Princeton. He went to Italy in 1960, where he studied with Luigi Dallapiccola and met the flautist Severino Gazzelloni, with whom he performed in a number of concerts, thus beginning a career as a performer of new piano music. His early friendship with Christian Wolff and David Behrman, and (through Wolff) his acquaintance with John Cage and David Tudor, strongly influenced his development in both composition and performance. In Rome in the mid-1960s, together with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum, he founded the MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva) group, which quickly became known for its pioneering work in improvisation and live electronics. Bringing together both classical and jazz avant-garde composers (including Anthony Braxton and Steve Lacy), MEV developed an aesthetic of music as a spontaneous collective process, an aesthetic which was shared with other experimental ensembles of the same period (especially the Living Theatre and the Scratch Orchestra). Since 1977, he has been Professor of Composition at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Liège. He has also taught at the Yale School of Music, the University of Cincinnati, the State University of New York at Buffalo, the California Institute of the Arts, and the University of California at San Diego. In addition, he has taught at Mills College, the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag, the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, and the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe.
