Read What's On My Mind

by Whitney Strohmeyer
Artist Profile: Sasha Gentling
Posted by whitney , 4/30/02 at 11:20:43 AM. Sasha Gentling is a senior music/english major Middlebury College. She is also an accomplished pianist/composer. I met with Sasha over a meal and was privileged with the opportunity to chat with her about her musical experiences. The following is what played out during that conversation. Q: When did you first start playing piano? A: Age 11, but more seriously during the second semester of my first year at college at the age of 18. Q: Who has been your biggest influence to you regarding your music? A: At Middlebury, Diana Fanning (professional pianist/faculty), and my composition advisor while abroad in London Edwin Roxburg (composer). It is interesting that her musical advisors have been her biggest influences. I was interested to know more about the relationships she held with these people. Were their encounters academic by nature only, or did she feel a friendship-type bond with these people? Q: What was your relationship like with those individuals?

Fanning the fire
She's bigger than most Singaporeans realise with a huge fan base in Taiwan, China and here. Fans love her on TV, in films and on her albums. But has success isolated FANN WONG from her peers? This one tough cookie accepts the price of fame.

JAZZ ME NEWS
NEWSLETTER FOR THE JIM CULLUM JAZZ BAND
AND RIVERWALK, LIVE FROM THE LANDING PUBLIC RADIO SERIES
April 2000 by Jim Cullum Almost all my musical adventures are tangled up with my efforts to build a great jazz band and then to present the band's wares. So, it is a rare thing to go off to the wilds without the troops, and naturally these very occasional sojourns are filled with a degree of novelty and charm for me. After three tours, I am beginning to find a second home "Down Under." It was in this high good spirit that I sailed through my 38th consecutive New Year's Eve bash at The Landing, and set out for Australia. These days Bob doesn't live up to his drinking reputation. He is fit and healthy and strides around his Sydney neighborhood with great vigor. I have found that, as is sometimes the case, the stories have got bigger in the telling or Bob has calmed down 80% or so. After a couple of days of chasing him around "Crow's Nest" (that's the name of his Sydney neighborhood) we headed off, flying to Queensland, mostly to the city of Brisbane which is drop dead charming, I'd say. With a winding lovely river snaking all through town, it is not unlike San Antonio, except the river is some 100 times as wide. Big boats zoom up and down taking citizens up and down, and in typical Aussie fashion they all seem to be having a lovely time, all the time. I know they can't always be having a lovely time and I think maybe they see me coming! "Oh look, here comes an American chap, let's put him on a bit."

New for the page "Yesterday's Concert Pianists" Early in September a biography page for Dame Myra Hess was published at the Carolina Classical Collection , edited by Charley Moss. This is an excellent, concise article about this famous lady and she forms the inspiration for this month's Editorial Musings. Nigel Nettheim has expanded his offerings about Maryla Jonas into an index listing several rare articles about her life. This past month two readers (see Letters to the Editor ) introduced me to two great pianists from the past who have been neglected: Etelka Freund (b. Hungary, 1879; d. Zurich, May 27, 1977) and Lubka Kolessa (b. Lvov, Ukraine, May 19,1904; d. Toronto, Canada, 1997).
