Get ready to Mazurka By Judy Moore The strains of the mazurka, polonaise and krakowiak will mingle with symphonic, chamber and opera works when the School of Music commemorates the 80th anniversary of Poland's independence with an eight-day festival featuring that country's rich musical heritage. This is believed to be the largest presentation of Polish music in this country to date. The Nov. 17-24 festival will present nine concerts and much of the music contains patriotic and political references. There will be compositions by Chopin, Lutoslawski and Penderecki as well as less known masterworks and traditional folk songs and dances. Additional festival events include pre-concert Informances lectures on Polish history, music, art and culture designed to expand knowledge and enrich listening experiences. Seven of the concerts will be held at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall and two at Lutkin Hall. School of Music faculty member Mariusz Smolij, the festival's artistic coordinator and a native of Poland, will conduct the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra and co-conduct the Philharmonia and Contemporary Music Ensemble. Mount Allison's Independent Student Journal Online Arts and Literature Back to contents The 2001-2002 Performing Arts Series at Mount Allison University is off to a grand start this year. On Thursday, September 27 at 7:00 pm in Convocation Hall, Symphony Nova Scotia performed with conductor Simon Streatfield and guest pianist Janina Fialkowska. This performance was a rare treat for Sackville audiences: a chance to hear a professional symphony orchestra performing live. Symphony Nova Scotia is a Maritime cultural treasure - the only fully professional symphony orchestra east of Québec City. This season, Symphony Nova Scotia welcomes Simon Streatfield in his second year as principal guest conductor and artistic advisor. Mr. Streatfield was born and educated in England. He began his career in music as a violist, performing with such noted ensembles as the Academy of St. Martins-in theFields, of which he was a founding member. Great Book of Interviews Sunday, February 4, 2001 These titles are available through Dover Publications which is a significant source of important material for musical and cultural enrichment. This latest book is no exception. It's full of great quotable material. Great Contemporary Pianists Speak For Themselves Elyse Mach This book would ordinarily follow a reading of Great Pianists on Piano Playing by James Francis Cooke, also available from Dover, which I reviewed here last year. For one thing this is a far more contemporary book than Cooke's and the pianists interviewed are a mix of some of the older greats with some of the newer talents. Conspicuously missing but far from forgotten is Arthur Rubinstein. He is remembered largely through his protege, Janina Fialkowska. The portraits of some of the pianists one will actually meet inside are from top left to bottom right, Vladimir Horowitz, Claudio Arrau, Andre Watts, Alicia de Larrocha, Glenn Gould, Emil Gilells, Rosalyn Tureck and Jorge Bolet. Each has quite different stories to tell of how they came to be concert pianists. Worth discovering! Travel through time By Arthur Kaptainis (music critic, The Gazette, Montreal) Past: Were there pianists of substance before Glenn Gould? The discography is silent on this subject. There were some prodigies­Ellen Ballon in Montreal and Mona Bates in Toronto­who turned into patrons or pedagogues. André Mathieu, alas, became a drunk. It is interesting to note that the multi talented Sir Ernest MacMillan, who trained as an organist and busied himself mainly as a conductor, visited Rudolf Serkin in Vermont and was told by the master that he played piano "like a very good pianist who hasn't kept up his practice." Still, Gould is obviously in a league of his own. I like his interpretations of Scriabin, which sound emotionally spontaneous as well as brilliant in the usual Gould ways. As a laureate of the Leeds Competition he joined the impressive fraternity of past winners which includes Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia. I first heard Parker live about ten years ago in concert with the Edmonton Symphony at the Jubilee Auditorium. Parker has a virile stage presence that immediately commands attention. His performance of Prokofiev's daunting Piano Concerto No 3 was unforgettable. With a rich, round piano tone he communicated both the lyricism and the sometimes furious excitement of the work. He did not hide behind the bravura notes but rather made the music his own and conveyed a genuine understanding of the piece. Since that memorable concerto I have heard Parker once more live with the Edmonton Symphony and several more times on CBC radio. At each hearing my initial impressions are confirmed: here is an artist truly in touch with his musical ideas, expressing them with conviction, ample technical ability and discipline.

Piano Six a Canadian success story By Jane Colwell, Colwell Arts Management, Piano Six project co-ordinator The Piano Six Piano Six artists to schools and concert halls in small or isolated communities throughout Canada. During the ten-year life of this project, each artist has pledged to take time out from his or her busy international career to tour solo for ten days each year for Piano Six , performing in a different region each year. In order to give as many communities as possible a chance to participate in these extraordinary tours, the artists offer their services to the project for a fraction of their recital fees. Says Piano Six founder Janina Fialkowska, "we're especially anxious to reach out to those communities who think - quite wrongly -that they're too small or too far away to attract a major concert artist". One of the project's special features is that artists are made available to host communities for not only a public recital but also some form of educational out-reach event, such as a school mini-concert, a masterclass for area piano students or a teachers' workshop. Fialkowska admits thatthetoursinvolve "unbelievable amounts of work - some of us go out for ten days and give twenty-two performances". As mentally and physically challenging as these tours can be, however, she and her colleagues feel strongly that their efforts are repaid by the enjoyment and satisfaction that they derive from their personal encounters with music lovers all across the country. The On-line Edition This week's special feature September 19, 2001 Mount Allison University Announces First Recital Of 2001-2002 Season Performing Arts Series Begins New Season Mount Allison University Announces First Recital Of 2001-2002 Season The Mount Allison University department of music will present its first recital of the 2001-2002 season on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. in Brunton Auditorium on campus. The recital will feature Belinda Code (oboe and English horn), James Code (horn), Lynn Johnson (piano) and a jazz quintet of faculty and students. Works on the program will be Domenico Cimarosa's Concerto for oboe, James Grant Code's Sonata for horn and piano, Gordon Jacob's Rhapsody for English horn, Code's Encounters II for oboe, horn and piano, and a set of jazz standards. Performers in the jazz quintet will be James Code on horn, James Mark on saxophone, Brian Ellard on piano, Andrew Tang on bass and Andrew Chandler on drums. James and Belinda Code have been on faculty at Mount Allison since 1969 and have performed frequently in the Maritime provinces with Symphony New Brunswick and the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra. Lynn Johnson is well known as a collaborative pianist and teacher in the Moncton vicinity and around the Maritimes.

Z Dr. Glenn Buhr Bio Selected works On CD Bio Dr. Glenn Buhr Glenn Buhr (b. 1954) Glenn Buhr's works have been performed by chamber ensembles, soloists and orchestras all over the world. He became well known in Canada as co-founder with Bramwell Tovey of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's New Music Festival. He was composer-in-residence with the WSO and curator of the New Music Festival from 1990 to 1996. In March 1996, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra created the position of Artist Laureate for Dr. Buhr. He is associate professor of music composition at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, and is also active as a guest conductor having conducted concerts with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Recently, he was music director of the St. Norbert Arts and Cultural Centre and artistic director of the Music in the Ruins festival in Manitoba. He has received several composition awards, including first prize in the prestigious Italian Pro Loco Corciano Competition for Epigrams, a work for wind orchestra. In 1998 he was named University Research Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University, the first time that honour had been given to a creative artist. He has also received a large number of commissions from many important performers and ensembles including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Penderecki String Quartet, the Detroit Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, pianist Janina Fialkowska, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Children's Chorus. His music has been performed by such diverse ensembles as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, pianist Louis Lortie, soprano Tracy Dahl and many
