BELA BARTOK: Concerto for Viola and Orchestra. PETER EOTVOS: Replica. GYORGY KURTAG: Movement for Viola and Orchestra - Kim Kashkashian, viola. Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra conducted by Peter Eotvos. ECM New Series 1711. There is a serenity, acceptance and mastery of composition in Bartok's Viola Concerto that summarizes a lifetime of composition. This beautifully crafted work provides the viola an opportunity to exhibit its virtuosic wares in the context of an orchestral tapestry that illuminates its strengths without overpowering its vulnerable character. The adagio is of the same ilk as the slow movements of the last two piano concertos: calm and exquisitely beautiful. The last movement is a rondo characteristic of one of the many Hungarian folk tunes that rejuvenated Bartok's compositional life. Kim Kashkashkian plays expressively with a flawless technique. She is ably partnered by the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra and the recording is well balanced and clear. If you don't know this masterly work, this is a great place to start. The Movement for Viola and Orchestra was written in 1954 by Gyorgy Kurtag as a graduation work and has elements of late romanticism interspersed with the strength and excitement of the conservative modernism of the fifties.

In these new arrangements specially made for the singer, the superb Jamaican-born bass-baritone performs a collection of sprituals and ballads made famous by the legendary singer, actor and civil rights activist Paul Robeson. Highlights include fine versions of Joe Hill, Lazy Bones, Mood Indigo, Eriskay Love Lilt and On My Journey Now, and Willard White’s subtle yet rich voice brings wit as well as gravitas to these iconic songs. This is a worthy tribute to one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable and influential performers. EVERY GRAIN OF SAND - BARB JUNGR LINN AKD 187. The wonderful Barb Jungr sings a selection of Bob Dylan songs in true chansons style, revealing the music’s poetry, melancholy and sweetness. The songs range from early material (I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight, Tangled up in Blue and Forever Young) to more recent compositions such as the soulful Sugar Baby from Dylan’s Love and Theft album. The music has been imaginatively arranged and is performed with sensitivity throughout. There are particularly fine versions of Things Have Changed, I Want You and the immensely touching Is Your Love In Vain? Other musicians on this outstanding CD include Simon Wallace, Russell Churney, Mark Lockheart, Gary Hammond, Julie Walkington, Sonia Oakes Stuart, Sonja Fairburn and Kim Burton. Highly recommended. The Nova Scotia Symphony Orchestra Last Thursday evening , Sackville music lovers were treated to a wonderful program of Brahms and Beethoven on the first concert of what promises to be an exciting Performing Arts Series. Featured artists for the recent concert included native Montreal pianist Janina Fialkowska, Symphony Nova Scotia, under the baton of Simon Streatfield, and guest concertmaster Isabelle Fournier, who joined us from England, where she is a member of the illustrious St. Martin-in-the-Fields Orchestra. (Ms. Fournier, who is from Moncton, undoubtedly brought back many pleasant musical memories to many local residents who remembered her.) The program consisted of only two works, but what works those were: in the first half, Brahms' Piano Concerto in d minor, Op. 15, and in the second, Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92! The Brahms concerto, a work in three movements or sections, is a monumental pillar of the keyboard-and-orchestra literature. The first movement, nearly twenty minutes in length, is emotionally charged, and journeys through passages of intense drama and fire as well as great awe and revelation. The second movement, a slow and reflective one, expresses beautifully feelings of intense longing and unfulfilled desire, and represents, for me, Romantic music at its best. What ends this work is an exciting and titanic gallop with fantastic rhythms, dialogue-like interactions between piano and orchestra, and dazzling displays of pianistic virtuosity.
