Brief History of the Third Concerto
The Third (as it will be known for the rest of this article) was completed as a major composition which Rachmaninoff would "show off" in New York in 1909 during his first concert tour of USA. He wrote the work in the peace of his family's country estate, Ivanovka, and it was completed on 23 September 1909 (Julian Calendar).

The gifted young pianist Zeynep Ucbasaran began her musical studies at the age of four at the Istanbul Conservatory. On this rewarding CD recorded at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, she plays two works by Franz Schubert: his profound and noble Sonata in A major and the visionary Wanderer-Fantasy. Both pieces are awe-inspiring in their scope and demanding for the performer but Zeynep Ucbasaran plays superbly and intelligently throughout. CHOPIN PIANO WORKS, VOL. 1 - FELIPE BROWNE CLAUDIO CR5149-2. The superb young Chilean-born pianist Felipe Browne performs a thoughtfully chosen selection of works by Chopin. These include four Ballades, the Fantaisie Op.49 in F minor, Etude Op.10 No. 12 in C minor, Prelude Op.28 No.24 in D minor and Nocturne Op.48 No. 1 in C minor. The highly accomplished playing is intelligent and elegant throughout. ‘Browne dazzled the crowd with his keen sense of articulation, brilliant finger speed and tempering of power with eloquent sensitivity’ - The Washington Post ENSAYO ENY-CD-9731.

Season 2000 Overview (printable version) T he Newport Music Festival 2000 will celebrate its 32 nd season July 7-23, continuing its tradition of presenting unique chamber music programs, American debuts, world-class artists and special events in the grand “summer cottages” of Newport, Rhode Island. Beginning his second quarter century as General Director, Dr. Mark P. Malkovich, III researches and selects works from the 19 th century chamber music, vocal repertoire and the Romantic-era piano literature, to create one of the most extraordinary festivals in the world. In its thirty-one year history, the Newport Music Festival has become celebrated for presenting over one hundred artists and ensembles in their American debuts. The Festival will present sixty-one concerts—three, four and even five per day—in Newport’s famed mansions with over seventy artists from around the world participating. The Yamaha Corporation of America, Time Magazine and Champagne Louis Roederer continue as the major Festival sponsors. American Express has been added to that prestigious list.

    THE NEWPORT MUSIC FESTIVAL
    An Interview with
Mark Malkovich IV G. Spencer Berger
Around Newport, and especially as it might relate to the Newport Music Festival, he is known as “Mark, Jr.” Because it is his father, Dr. Mark P. Malkovich III, who is acknowledged as an expert in the field of chamber music and who as General Director of the Newport Music Festival for the past twenty-six seasons has brought the Festival to national and international prominence. Mark, Jr. recalls, “Every summer this was my summer job through high school and college. After college, I worked for a record company in Los Angeles, Angel Records, that produced some of the great classics of classical music. I returned to Newport in 1989 and settled into the Marketing Director’s job that I have held for 11 years.” I thought that it would be interesting to get a glimpse of the Newport Music Festival through the eyes, not to mention the ears, of one of the family – Mark Malkovich IV. What is the Newport Music Festival, I asked him. Malkovich replied, “The Newport Music Festival is a chamber music festival – classical music focusing mainly on chamber music of the classical era, roughly 1800 to 1925. There is a lot of music written in that period. You would think that after all these concerts and all these seasons that we would have exhausted the supply of music, quartets, trios, piano repertoire, string repertoire and vocal repertoire. But, we haven’t. Artistically, there is still a lot of music there to hear and present. That has been Dad’s challenge all along: to present the unusual.
