Reviews a wonderful collection of calmer chopin pieces A while back I decided to purchase Ashkenazy's Complete Piano Works of Chopin. It is a wonderful collection, and Ashkenazy is one of the masters of Chopin. I thought this ten CD box set would be all of the Chopin I would need.
Some friends recently bought me this two cd set, and it has proven to be an excellent gift. The pieces chosen for this collection are some of Chopin's calmer and more reflective works. Barenboim, Vasary, Juisada, Ugorski, and Luisada are fine pianists, and it is nice to have different interpretations of theses works. A good collection for close attention or casual listening.
    Highly recommended.

Keyboard practice or clavier etude consisting of an Aria with different variations for the harpsichord with two manuals. Prepared for the comfort and enjoyment of music lovers by the Court Composer for the king of Poland and Selected Governor of Saechs, Director of Music in Leipzig von Johann Sebastian Bach. Published by Verlegung Balthasar Schmids in Nurnberg.
The year of composition In the Leipzig era, in 1741 or 1742 of Bach's matured age. In the same era, the Well-Tempered Clavier volume 2 was published. But this volume No.2 contains works which were composed some more years before, so they were not completed in a limited term with concentration. Moreover, at that time " the Art of Fugue" was been under composition parallelly with the Goldberg. It means more.

Many of us including me thought him as professor or researcher not as performer. He made the great works of editing scores and analyzing the music. But in my opinion Ralph Kirkpatrick was better than Wanda Landowska as harpsichord player for the Goldberg Variations. Glenn Gould did not mention this at all. I don't know why.
However this recording was not only for the Goldberg Variations but also for all the four practices for clavier by Bach. I think that he did not have any intension to give a world-wide publication to the Goldberg Variations. Anyway this CD was made by digitizing the master tapes ( Ampex 402B ; 38 cm/sec ) of 1952 in 1996. Wows have been eliminated. Noises have been removed. It is like a newly recorded CD. As to the performance, there is no repeat, so all are A-B-. It is not a virtuoso type, but clear and beautiful.

SIX DEGREES OF TONALITY - ENID KATAHN GASPARO GSCD-344 This fascinating album, subtitled ‘A Well Tempered Piano’, is pianist Enid Katahn’s follow-up to Beethoven in the Temperaments (Gasparo GSCD-332). On this admirable new recording she explores six different historical tunings in six well-known classical compositions for piano - all performed with intelligent poise on the modern concert grand. The works are by Scarlatti (Sonata, D, K. 96), Mozart (Fantasie, D mi), Haydn (Sonata, Eb), Beethoven (Sonata, Ab, Op. 110), Chopin (Fantaisie-Impromptu) and Grieg (Glochengelaute). ‘The CD is a valuable addition to the library of all pianophiles, performers and listeners alike’ - American Record Guide STRAVINSKY/SCRIABIN - GWHYNETH CHEN PRO PIANO RECORDS PPR224523 The brilliant Taiwan-born pianist Gwhyneth Chen won the Pigorelich International Piano competition in 1994 and has subsequently become a highly successful concert performer around the world. On this recording she plays outsatnading early 20th century works: Igor Stravinsky’s Three movements from Petrouchka (Danse russe, Chez Petrouchka and La semaine grasse) and Alexander Scriabin’s irresistible Fantasy in B Minor, as well as his Sonata No.3 in F-sharp Minor. Gwhyneth Chen captures perfectly both Stravinsky’s virtuoso percussiveness and Scriabin’s tender, soulful melancholy. BRAZILIAN MOSAIC - CLELIA IRUZUN/LONTANO LONTANO LNT115 This album is filled with exhilarating compositions by Brazilian composers. With the exception of the first two pieces (Francisco Mignone’s beguiling Fantasia Brasiliera No. 3 for piano and orchestra, and the Bachianas Brasilieras by Villa-Lobos), the others are played solo by the distinguished Brazilian-born pianist Clélia Irizun. She is particularly effective in Edino Krieger’s classic-influenced Sonatina, with its alternating brightness and serenity. The other works here are by Villa-Lobos (‘the three Marias’), Barrozo Netto (Minha Terra), Ronaldo Miranda (Concertino) and Marlos Nobre (Concertante do Imgaginario). The Cuban-born, American-raised Odaline of la Martinez and her ensemble Lontano are also in impeccable form on this delightful panorama of Brazilian music.

    PUSHKIN DAYS IN MIKHAILOVSKOYE
By Y. Andrusenko June 6 is Pushkin Day in Russia. It was established 3 years ago when Russia celebrated the bicentennial of the great poet Alexander Pushkin. His contemporary, writer Nikolai Gogol once made a prophetic remark: "Pushkin is a phenomenon of Russian spirit, a Russian man such as he is and will probably be 200 years after". Preparations for Pushkin Days festivities start long before June. Poetry festivals, theatre productions, art exhibitions, concerts, and, finally, balls - these are just a few events on the holiday's vast and versatile program. Pushkin's memorial museums invite visitors to admire the beautiful nature he eulogized in his poems. The Pushkin family estate in Mikhailovskoye is situated near the city of Pskov in the north-west of Russia. The typical Russian landscape intertwined with the traditional Russian way of life "create a harmony that leaves no one indifferent. It reverberates in Pushkin's lines and in our hearts", says the Mikhailovskoye museum's director Georgy Vasilevich. "Looking back into the 19th century we can see that famous writers and artists lived quite a different life", Vasilevich says. "Most of them had two houses - one in town, the other in the country. Unhurried life on a country estate surrounded by a park… This well-organized world helping a writer concentrate on his thoughts and ideas has been largely neglected. Nature took care of itself. Now landscape design as an inalienable part of Russian culture is being revived. Even though the Russians borrowed landscape architecture from the British, French and Italians, they managed to create a unique and profoundly Russian park style".

Sergio Fiorentino Memorial Site II S E R G I O F I O R E N T I N O pianist musician Reactions to his concerts appearances Tuesday night in The Breakers Fiorentino opened the Newport Festival by making his first American appearance in 43 years. A courtly gentleman with an aureole of white hair, Fiorentino looks like a pianist in an old movie - or like photographs of the German pianist Wilhelm Kempff. Fiorentino, like Horowitz or Dubravka Tomsic, is undemonstrative at the keyboard; he doesn't have time for theater, because there is so much color and drama in the actual playing. The first half of the recital was "serious", the second devoted to entertainment - but these are false distinctions. Fiorentino's performance of the Schumann "Fantasy" was architecturally sound, but it was also full of darting, unexspected departures and a sense of play. And like the great pianists of the past, Fiorentino doesn't play transcriptions of waltzes to show off his virtuosity but to celebrate the waltz in all its intricate, teasing glory. The waltzes were the Liszt version of the Kermesse from Gounod's "Faust", Fiorentino's transcriptions of a Tchaikovsky waltz and a sequence of waltzes from "Der Rosenkavalier", Tausig's transcription of Strauss' "Man lebt nur einmal!" and the masterpiece fo the genre, Godowsky's "Symphonic Metamor- phoses on Themes from Die Fledermaus". Fiorentino neatly discriminated among the various national styles; and his iridescent scales, glissandi, arpeggios, chords, double notes, and octaves, his opalescent shifting harmonies, and his superbly secure and supple rhythmic sense wre not virtuoso tricks but ornaments devised to dramatize the curve of each dance in delirious movement.

Welcome to the 2001 WTJU Classical Music Marathon. Each December the Classical Department at WTJU has the pleasure of bringing you programming of a variety and quality that you can hear nowhere else. Our regular listeners know that we take a different approach to presenting classical music. All of our announcers are volunteers, and we choose the music we program. We believe in what we play, and we only play the finest performances of complete works. Other stations choose their classical programming by formula and according to what radio consultants recommend. We devote whole programs to early music, chamber music, and sometimes challenging contemporary music, the kinds of music that other stations avoid. We present complete operas and vocal music all year round, unlike any other station in this area. Tim Snider Classical Director

Ruslan and Ludmila. Richter poo-poed politics as much as he did the trappings of the material world. He loathed America, a country that showered him with praise and was the site of several of his greatest triumphs, preferring to play in remote villages in the Siberian tundra. Even so, he is quick to protest that he had no objection to playing in large halls or prestigious venues, but that more often than not these were booked years in advance. When it came to expressing himself musically, he was not one to be kept waiting. Richter was essentially self-taught until he was in his late teens, working first in theaters and as an accompanist to opera regisseurs. It was under such circumstances that he developed his orchestral approach to the piano, and cultivated the theatrical largesse of his playing (which itself poses a contradiction to his conviction that there ought to be nothing theatrical about the concert experience). He confesses freely that his subsequent studies with Heinrich Neuhaus (pictured here in rare film clips from concerts and cocktail parties, he looks like a cross between Schnabel and Einstein) gave him a new, more rounded approach to tone production.

You know those ancient legends where people fervently wish for something, then up pops a genie and they wind up with far more than they can handle? A few years ago in a Goldmine review I lamented that while we had fine historical surveys of the violin, cello, viola and even the harpsichord, sorely missing was the most popular instrument of all, the piano. Well, a genie at Philips must have heard my call. I'm now reveling in their massive "Great Pianists of the 20th Century" edition. Would you believe two hundred discs ? And you thought Bear Family boxes were huge? Fortunately, the Edition isn't as unwieldy as it might sound. It comes in 100 2-CD units, each devoted to a single artist. Ten are due each month or so through October. The volumes are mid-line (although in England they're priced even lower as "2-fers"). Sheer size apart, this is a hugely impressive project. Here's the stats: 72 pianists, of whom seven giants (Arrau, Brendel, Gilels, Horowitz, Kempff, Richter and Rubinstein) are honored with three volumes each; sixteen more get two. (OK, wise guys - the math is correct, since two of the volumes feature pairs of pianists.) The total running time is over 250 hours, with most discs very full (some approach 81 minutes!). Much of the music is new to CD. Although Philips' own material (and that of their Decca and Deutsche Grammophon affiliates) figures prominently, recordings were licensed from the other majors (EMI, RCA and Sony) and many smaller labels as well.

The National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center is comprised of two buildings which are situated symmetrically- the National Theater and the National Concert Hall. The exterior design of them was based on the traditional Chinese styles, which fully expressed the aesthetics of Chinese classical architecture. And the interior with many twinkling chandeliers was totally beautiful. I was so happy to have enjoyed Vadim's music in such a gorgeous atmosphere. The concert Vadim participated was taken place as the first concert of 3 consecutive nights event, which was named "Tchaikovsky Festival", and all of the concerts were performed by Kirov Orchestra and Valery Gergiev. We found many advertising banners of the festival fluttering in the city. Gergiev is extremely popular in Japan, and also he is the very conductor played Tchaikovsky violin concerto with 15-year-old Vadim at his debut concert in Japan. Who knows my huge expectation?
