Behind the scenes of the Newport Music Festival
By BILL RODRIGUEZ T he piano notes drifting out of the music room were coming from speakers rather than from the baby grand. It's an audition tape, Mark P. Malkovich III explained, one of 10 a day, on the average, that musicians and their agents send to him. "That's a lot to evaluate, but with my built-in Catholic guilt I feel like I have to listen to each one, I really do," he said. "And also I know from vast experience that sometimes there's just a gem." To illustrate he stepped into the wood-paneled room, which was lined with CDs and record albums he has more than 15,000 picked out a cassette from a short stack and placed it into the player. "This is Alain Jacquon's. I brought it with me, along with a lot of others, when I went down to St. Bart's this winter," he said as music again filled the room. "When I finally listened to it..." And he swayed to the Liszt etude, a gentle passage that could be in a beginning music student's practice book, but which here, under the hands of a young master, ebbed and flowed with an undercurrent of distilled feeling. "Wonderful," observed the Director General of the increasingly prestigious festival, now entering his 20th year in charge. French pianist Jacquon will have his North American debut July 12.

Klaveri Suur Nädal Rein Rannap
Rahvusvaheline festival Klaver '98 26. oktoobrist 1. novembrini Estonia kontserdisaalis.

http://www.lydiajardon.com/press_en_1.html
July 7-8, 2001 Festival opens on high note By James J. Gillis, Daily News staff If Friday night's performance is any indication, French pianist Lydia Jardon could become a fixture in these parts. Jardon wowed a packed house gathered at The Breakers for the opening of the 3 3rd Ne wport Music Festival with a series of Chopin pieces. Jardon deftly performed the preludes, maneuvering easily through a variety of tempo changes. Her elegance was a contrast to the theatrical performance by Russian pianist Andrei Gavrilov, who came off as part rock star/part Phantom of the Opera. The preludes Jardon performed were by turn melodically bright and ominously dark. Her tone was at times flourishing white understated. With her face covered by a mane of brown hair, Jardon leaned back at times during the slower portions and hunched over the keyboard to handle the more intricate sections. Jardon, one of five performers making American debuts at the festival, played Prelude in C-sharp Minor as well as Prelude in A-flat Major ending the first portion of the program with Twenty-four Preludes
