FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
I Hear a Rhapsody: The Classical Music of George Gershwin A One-Day Symposium on Saturday, April 6; Featuring Discussions on Gerhswin’s Newly Discovered Works By Famed Musicologist Alicia Zizzo and A Concert by Celebrated Pianist Jeffrey Biegel Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY ... The Hofstra University Cultural Center presents the symposium I Hear a Rhapsody: The Classical Music of George Gershwin on Saturday, April 6, in celebration of the classical music of one of America’s greatest composers and songwriters. Throughout his unfortunately brief lifetime, Mr. Gershwin composed many works for concert audiences. His close ties to the world of theater and commercial music gave these works a very personal and uniquely American flavor. During this symposium George Gershwin’s music will be performed and discussed by leading historians, music publishers and pianists. The newly expanded classical repertoire of Mr. Gershwin will be featured during this symposium. These recently discovered works have catapulted Gershwin’s name even further into the sphere of major American classical composers. It is musicological research of symposium guest Alicia Zizzo that led to the publication of all the new works by Warner Brothers Publications under the auspices of the Gershwin estate. These are the first new publications of George Gershwin’s music in over half a century.

George Gershwin:
From Piano to Forte
George Gershwin was one of the most influential American composers. He impacted the music of his time and today with his unique rhythms, melodies, and style. George's parents were Jewish-Russian immigrants. His father's name was Morris Gershovitz, and his mother's was originally Rose Bruskin. They were married in 1895, and Americanized their name to Gershwin. They had four children. Ira was born on December 6, 1896. George was their second son, born on September 26, 1898. Arthur and Francis were next in line in 1900 and 1906 (Rowley 1). George's birthplace was Brooklyn, New York. His father was a somewhat unsuccessful entrepreneur, and the family had moved twenty-eight times by the time George was eighteen (Penumbra 1). George's childhood was different from what many might think. He was out-going and energetic, but a trouble maker at school. He showed no interest in music. The family went bankrupt in 1914 and moved to Coney Island, where George became known as a fighter. He stole fruit, pretzels, and bagels from the local shops (Rowley 1). He was an outdoors boy, who didn't care for indoor activities (Penumbra 1). Even though he didn't seem to care for it, music had a profound effect on George. Once, while passing an arcade, he heard a mechanical piano playing Rubinstein's "Melody in F." He seemed to be put in a trance. A few years later, when he heard Maxie Rosenzweig playing the violin, he waited outside the school for an hour in the rain just to meet the older boy. Eventually, the two became the best of friends, and Maxie taught George everything he knew about music (Rowley 1). Unfortunately, he also told George that he didn't have any musical aptitude, but he didn't let that stop him. George's love of music grew from that point on (Penumbra 1-2).

Since I Found You and Ragging the Traumerei . These were rough in style but demonstrated a merge between the two forms. Gershwin greatly admired the songs of Irving Berlin, and among his earliest musical heroes were Franz Liszt and the great pianists who were then appearing in New York, such as Josef Lhevinne, Josef Hoffmann, and composer-pianist Ferrucio Busoni.
In July 1917, Gershwin began working as the rehearsal pianist for a Broadway show by Jerome Kern and Victor Herbert: Miss 1917 . After the show opened in November at the Century Theater, Gershwin stayed on as the organizer of and accompanist for a series of popular concerts held there on Sunday evenings. His talent as a composer began to be noticed by influential people. Although he had previously published little, in early 1918 Max Dreyfus, the head of Harms Publishing Company, offered him a weekly salary for the rights to any songs he might compose in the future. Before the year was out, three Broadway shows carried songs by Gershwin. Soon afterwards, in collaboration with Arthur L. Jackson and Buddy De Sylva, Gershwin composed his first full Broadway score: La La Lucille , which opened on Broadway in May 1919. Before he had reached his 21st birthday, Gershwin was known, not only as an outstanding pianist, but he could also claim the composition of a Broadway show to his credit, several songs in print, and a steady income from a well-known publisher for his future works.

Pianist to perform Gershwin Concerto at Verizon By Michael Rydzynski
For Irvine World News George Gershwin has always been popular with audiences. Perhaps because of this popularity, and also due to the fact he was a composer of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood songs, his relatively few forays into classical music have been met by many musicians with a somewhat patronizing attitude. Alain Lefevre is not one of them. "His Concerto in F is one of my favorite piano concertos," said the French-Canadian pianist, who will perform the 1925 work with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra on Saturday at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Note Lefevre calling Gershwin's Concerto one of his favorites. Not one of his favorite American piano concertos, but all piano concertos.

Return to Gershwin Dances George Gershwin was an American composer, whose compositions mark the entrance of America into the serious international classical music world. His musicals and popular songs are among the finest in those genres, and his art-music compositions are infused with jazz and popular music. George Gershwin's parents emigrated from Russia to the U.S.A in 1891. He was born Jacob Gershowitz in Brooklyn, New York, on September 26, 1898. Early on he excelled at street sports in his poor lower east side Manhattan neighborhood and had no early musical contact. His first musical exposure came when a piano was brought to the Gershowitz home for his brother, Ira. George (age 12) took an immediate interest in the instrument and began to play a popular song he had memorized from a neighbor's player piano. His parents invested in lessons for George beginning at age 13. He studied with the American composers Rubin Goldmark, Henry Cowell, and Wallingford Riegger and with the Russian-born composer and theorist Joseph Schillinger. At the age of 15 Gershwin had quit school and was a pianist and "song plugger" for a Tin Pan Alley music-publishing firm, Jerome H. Remick & Company, earning $15 a week. To supplement his income, on Saturdays, Gershwin recorded piano rolls under various pseudonyms. For his efforts he received $35 for six rolls. He was a great admirer of the comedian Ed Wynn and it is at this time, in honor of him, that Gershwin changed the end of his last name.
