ARIS, 14 November 1997
- Pianist Sviatoslav Richter died in Moscow on 1 August after suffering a heart attack at the age of 82. The Ukrainian-born pianist of German descent was one of the greatest musicians of the Soviet era, and for many, one of the 20th century's greatest pianists. Richter came to the attention of western publics in the 1960s, preceded by Emil Gilels's accounts of his contemporary's legendary feats at the keyboard. Although Richter was a late developer (not beginning serious tuition until 1937 at the age of 22 with the eminent pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus, who also taught Gilels) he still went on to become one of the most unusual artists the classical music world has ever known. In fact, Richter had that rarest of musical gifts: he kept you listening even after he had stopped playing. In Europe, Richter was positively lionized, notably in Germany and France where he had a second home and spent considerable time. Liturgical devotion to the text, an uncanny mixture of artistic genius, and iconoclastic behavior made Richter the leading draw in Paris. After all, the idea that a pianist will pack up his instrument in a van and set off for who knows where, stop because he likes the look of a wheat field in Touraine, then notifying a couple of locals and giving a legendary performance in a barn appeals to the strong individualistic streak in every Frenchman. Of such escapades, the Festival of La Grange de Meslay was born.

Moscow Pays Tribute to an Irish Pianist By Raymond Stults
For MT Ranking among the most important of Ireland's cultural contributions to Russia is certainly John Field, the Irish-born pianist who arrived in St. Petersburg in 1802 at the age of 20 and spent most of his remaining 35 years playing, composing and teaching in Russia. Though treated today as little more than a footnote to Russian musical history, Field for his pupils and those who followed in their footsteps perhaps rightly deserves to be regarded as the father of Russian piano playing. On Saturday evening at the Moscow Conservatory, local music lovers will have a rare chance to hear Field's music, with a performance of the second of his seven piano concertos by the noted Irish Field interpreter, pianist MiceÇl O'Rourke, accompanied by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its music director, Vladimir Ziva. The concert takes place under the patronage of the Irish Embassy and marks the 30th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and what has become the Russian Federation. Born in Dublin, Field moved with his family at the age of 11 to London, where he became a star pupil of Italian composer, pianist and piano manufacturer Muzio Clementi. It was with Clementi that he came to St. Petersburg, at the end of a long European tour on which Field demonstrated the virtues of Clementi's instruments.

Even his recording of the Ninth Hungarian Rhapsody of Liszt at age 20 was the work of a master, and his later development fulfilled hisearly promise. When he finally made his American debut in 1955, he was a finished artist of great tonal and dynamic variety, capable of great insight in Beethoven, Brahms, French music, Schubert, Bach (especially in transcriptions), and the Russians. This recital offers his first appearance in the West: politics kept him in the Soviet Union except for competition tours prior to WW II. Gary Lemco

69. Bach - Segment 16
Here's a performance of Busoni's transcription of the D major prelude and fugueas played in concert in Moscow by the Russian pianist emil gilels in 1968.

J.S. Bach - segment 16 Bach in Transcription Bach-Busoni, Prelude and Fugue in D, BWV 532 (Gilels, 13 minutes) Busoni's Bach transcriptions for piano likewise include a number of chorale preludes, and these pieces have long been viewed as exacting tests of the pianist's craft. All of them require careful control of articulation and distinct partitioning of textures, sometimes in the midst of daunting demands for agility. Here are four of them played in a new recording by Murray Perahia. Bach-Busoni, 4 Chorale Preludes (list titles) (Perahia, 13 minutes) Johannes Brahms was also a great admirer of Bach's music and was actively involved in the Bach Society that published the first complete edition of Bach's works. His transcription of the Chaconne from the D minor violin partita is less well known than Busoni's but is in some ways even more demanding because it is for left hand alone. In this way Brahms seems to be responding to Bach's example in creating a vast polyphonic edifice with relatively limited means. Bach-Brahms, Chaconne (Anatol Ugorski, 18 minutes)

trovar.com Sviatoslav Richter - an introduction to his life and work Sviatoslav Richter, widely regarded as one of the finest Russian pianists of the twentieth century, was born in Zhitomir, in the Ukraine, on March 20, 1915. His father, Theophile, was an organist and gave the young Sviatoslav his early musical training. Richter’s mother, Anna, was a talented artist who loved music and was related to the Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. The young Richter was essentially self-taught and developed his exceptional technique by playing whatever music he liked. By the age of eight he was playing opera scores, including the music of Richard Wagner. He had the ability to memorize any music at sight. Richter grew up in Odessa, where his father taught at the Conservatory. Also growing up in Odessa at the same time were Emil Gilels and David Oistrakh, who would later become Richter’s chamber-music partner. During these years he was a “repetiteur,” or rehearsal pianist, in Odessa. His debut as a soloist came on February 19, 1934, at the Odessa House of Engineers. The program included the Chopin Ballade no. 4, Polonaise-fantaisie, and E Major Scherzo, as well as a selection of Nocturnes, Etudes, and Preludes, all difficult pieces. The recital was a great success and Richter’s career as virtuoso was under way. In 1937 Richter left Odessa for Moscow to study with the great pianist and pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus. Richter did not take the entrance exam at the Conservatory. He simply asked Neuhaus to teach him. Neuhaus listened to his playing and said, "Here is the pupil for whom I have waited all my life. In my opinion, he is a genius." Neuhaus declared that he had nothing to teach Richter but accepted him as a pupil anyway. On November 26, 1940, while still a student at Moscow Conservatory, Richter made his Moscow debut. Here he gave the first public performance of the Prokofiev Sonata No. 6 and made a highly favorable impression on both the audience and the composer. When Prokofiev completed his Seventh Sonata in 1942, he gave it to Richter for the premiere. Richter learned the piece in only four days, and performed it the following January. Richter also gave the first performances of Prokofiev’s Eighth and Ninth Sonatas, the last of which was dedicated to Richter.

Schwann/Opus Tahra's CD called "The Romantic Concerto" again shows Jochum as a sensitive, involved partner. Here he is working with the best: Emil Gilels in one of the finest performances you'll ever heard of Grieg's concerto, and Claudio Arrau in Schumann's concerto, recorded April 21, 1977, a dozen years after he made his unexceptional Philips recording with the Concertgebouw under Christoph von Dohnányi, at one time available on CD (Philips 426 079) coupled with Grieg's concerto. Tahra's CD offers both performance in superb stereo. The four-CD Jochum set of live stereo recordings dating from 1976 to 1980 is typical of his repertory. His long association with the Concertgebouw (his first concert was November 13, 1941) is always apparent in these glowing performances. Again the soloists, pianist Rudolf Buchbinder and Salvatore Accardo have the advantage of sensitive accompaniment. Reger's

Van Cliburn, 25, arrives in Baku for Concert. June 1960. Courtesy: Azerbaijan National Archives.
It was 35 years ago, on June 28, 1960, that a tall, lanky, youthful Texan gave a singular piano performance in Baku's Philharmonia. Two years earlier, he had caused a sensation both in the USSR and the U.S. by winning the coveted First Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow.
To this day, Van Cliburn's concert in Baku is remembered as one of the most extraordinary foreign performances ever given in Azerbaijan. Those who were fortunate enough to gain admittance (approximately 1,500 people) still remember it vividly.
This past June, Nina Fischeva, Director of the Photo and Cinema Materials at Azerbaijan's National State Archives, along with Fuad Akhundov, author of our series, "Legacy of the Oil Barons", prepared an album of Van Cliburn's visit to Baku from photos they found buried in the archive's files. Cliburn's birthday was coming up on July 12th; he would be 61. Would it be possible to find him and pass on a little album as a gesture of the admiration that Azerbaijanis still hold for him? Nina had attended Van Cliburn's concert; Fuad had not yet been born although his mother had been one of the lucky few who managed to find a ticket.

Pianist Yuri Lotakov
By
Lyn Bronson
Pianist Yuri Lotakov has it all. His technical equipment is formidable, his ability to shape a phrase musically is superb, and he has a wide range of dynamics (especially impressive on the subtle soft end of the spectrum). And he has impressive credentials, for he was born in Russia in 1945 and is a graduate of the Kiev State Conservatory where he studied with Vsevolod Topilin, the famous Russian pianist and teacher who studied under Heinrich Neuhaus with Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels.
Why then was it such an unsatisfying event when he appeared in recital at the University of California Santa Cruz Music Center Recital Hall on Wednesday November 7th? To begin with, it was a peculiar recital program consisting before intermission of Handel’s Chaconne in G Major, Six Preludes from Op. 34 by Shostakovich and Schubert’s “Wanderer” Fantasie. After intermission, we heard both books of the Brahms Paganini Variations, two “Songs Without Words” by Mendelssohn, and Scriabin’s Sonata No. 5, Op. 53. Surely it would have made more sense to have the two Mendelssohn pieces follow the Chaconne and to insert the Shostakovich Preludes between the Brahms and the Scriabin. Aside from the stylistic considerations of building a recital program, one can question the wisdom of programming such blockbusters as the “Wanderer” Fantasie, the Brahms Paganini Variations (both books, yet!) and the Scriabin Sonata No. 5 all on the same program by an artist who apparently has not been playing recitals for twenty years, and now wants to reenter the music field and establish a name and reputation for himself.

MAIA: I began my musical studies under my father (conductor of the symphonic orchestra) when I was three years old. I began to study piano because my father made me listen to a lot of classical music. I liked the music so much, my father decided to send me to study the piano at the more prestigious school of the Soviet Union (the Central Special Musical School in Moscow) for seven years (in 1973). ALEXEI: I was born in Moscow in 1966 in a family of musicians. My parents teach piano in a music school in Moscow. I started to play piano when I was six years old when I asked my mother to teach me to play. I entered the Musical School of "Gnesina," and after a few years I moved to the Central Special Musical School in Moscow, where I met my future wife, Maia, with whom I have played in duo since 1987.
