The Gershwin Legacy Continues
By Heather Zavod The Clinton, Connecticut, retreat of Leopold Godowsky III '56 is as richly textured as his life
and work. The cozy, beamed rooms of the older part of the fieldstone house lead to a glorious two-story room surrounded on three sides by glass walls and dominated by a grand piano. Godowsky is a composer, a pianist, and also the nephew of George and Ira Gershwin.
This year, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of George Gershwin, Godowsky performed his Concerto in F at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall last February and again in November with the Wallingford Symphony Orchestra at the Paul Mellon Arts Center. Chicago Tribune music critic Howard Reich says, "Pianist Godowsky...offers one of the most romantic
and heartfelt performances of the Concerto in F in the last three decades." "The family connection is not a secret," Godowsky says, "but I've always been very shy about taking advantage of it."
The Concerto in F, which Godowsky ranks with Porgy and Bess as among Gershwin's most important works, is unique in the way it combines jazz and the more classical elements of music. Accepting an invitation to perform at Lincoln Center, Godowsky learned the second and third movements in three monthsa short time for such a demanding pieceand without listening to other recordings because he wanted to interpret the music for himself. What makes his performance amazing is that Godowsky is dyslexic. He began to study piano at the age of five, but, unable to read music, he played mostly by ear. In his later teens, when "music meant more to me than anything," Godowsky compensated for this then-unrecognized problem and strengthened his sight-reading ability through sheer repetition and practice.

GODOWSKY: The Complete Studies on Chopin's Etudes
Marc-André Hamelin, pianist

Piano aficionados rejoice! Here is a set collectors have been waiting for - a superb recording by Hamelin of the complete set of Leopold Godowsky's incredibly difficult studies based on Chopin's Etudes, Opp. 10 and 25. Well, all that were written: Godowsky, for whatever reason, never wrote a study on Op. 25 No. 7. All 53 he did compose fit comfortably on two well-filled CDs. Of major importance is detailed documentation that makes it very clear for listeners to understand exactly what they are listening to. Harold Schonberg of the New York Times described this music as "probably the most impossibly difficult things ever written for the piano. These are fantastic exercises that push piano technique to heights undreamed of even by Liszt." No question about it; the G# minor Etude of Op. 25 is hard enough to play as originally written, but to play all those double thirds with the left hand! Very difficult, indeed! Leopold Godowsky (1870 - 1938) was born in Sozly near Vilnius (Wilno, now in Lithuania). Considering his achievements both on the concert stage and in writing for the piano, it is remarkable that he achieved all this with minimal formal training. After rudimentary instruction as a child, when 13 he studied for three months in Berlin and that was it; the rest was self-taught. He always was experimenting with new techniques. Godowsky had enormous interest in the technical side of playing the piano, focusing on different fingering and development of left hand performance. Little music had been written that was a true challenge for the left hand. Some composers wrote left-hand concertos for Paul Wittgenstein, including Prokofiev, Britten, Korngold and Ravel (Wittgenstein didn't play most of them and struggled with those he did). Blumenfeld's

It was commissioned by the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War I. Since then, a great number of composers have gone on to write music for the left hand alone. Oh, and this also happens to be an extremely wonderful piece of music. Godowsky, Leopold Prelude and Fugue "B.A.C.H." for the Left Hand CBC Godowsky pretty much only wrote piano music, and a great deal of it is for the left hand alone (I have no idea why). This piece is a tribute to J.S. Bach, since the first four notes of the fugue subject spell out B-A-C-H (using the German lettering system). I am absolutely amazed that it is possible to play all of the parts of a fugue with only one hand. Rorem, Ned

70. Pachmann Article By Kurt Welling

This web version is dated 3 December 2000, revised 29 January 2003.] DE PACHMANN'S BEQUEST TO PIANO ART by Kurt Welling
"BRAVO de Pachmann!" Thus in stentorian tones and with a grandiose gesture did Vladimir de Pachmann, addressing himself as well as his audience, proclaim his supremacy as the master technician and revealer of Chopin. He cavorted about the platform. He mumbled to the front row. Once I saw him persuade a reluctant Leopold Godowsky, who was in front, to get up and make a bow while the invincible de Pachmann eulogized the master composer-pianist as the greatest musician since Beethoven. But de Pachmann's eccentricity had become a part of him. In his younger days he may consciously have assumed certain mannerisms. When he grew older they blended with his personality, so his unusual platform behavior did not seem out of keeping with his make-up. Certainly not with his appearance. He was a short man with long arms which swung to and fro as he tripped out on the platform. He made one think of a gnome with his fantastic white hair and whimsical manner.

Leopold Godowsky: Java Suite (12 pieces in 4 parts) Alexandre Tasman: from 'Novelettes': Exotique (Danse Javanese) from 'Le tour de monde en miniature': Flute in the forest of Bandoeng (Java) Playing time: 60'38"
The young pianist, Esther Budiardjo, plays this music as if she were born with the notes already in her fingers. But, even so, it can't be easy to play. Godowsky was one of the most revered virtuosos of all time.
The scenes represented in Godowsky's Java Suite , such as those of the Hari Bazaar , portraying the hustle and bustle of a steamy provincial market depict something of its deceptive innocence and naivety along with its colour and atmosphere . The Chattering, Monkeys at the Sacred Lake , is an exquisite toccata-like piece that captures, not just the noisy charm of the monkeys, but also their, sometimes, irascible natures.

These figures aim to characterize or establish moods and subjects. Schubert, in particular, has bequeathed an enormous vocabulary of rhetorical figures. For example, the spinning motive, used to superb effect in "Gretchen am Spinnrade", quickly became a much-used gesture in the piano literature of the period. Godowsky's response to Schubert's vocabulary is typical. He never allows rhetorical figures to remain intact, in his transcriptions of twelve of Schubert's Songs. As an example, the water motive in Die Forelle is dissected and manipulated to the point where it loses much of its original character. But Godowsky's methods vary considerably from song to song. Schumanns
