Paul Ben-Haim (born Paul Frankenburger) started composing while still living in Germany but all the pieces here were written after he had settled in Palestine in 1933. At that time, too, he changed his name to Ben-Haim after his father’s Hebrew first name. The two Piano Suites Op.20 , composed in 1933 and 1936 respectively, are among the first works he wrote after settling in Palestine. Actually the Suite No.1 Op.20a was sketched after an exploratory trip to Palestine and completed on his return to Germany. The composer’s idea was to write a fairly easy work that could be played by gifted amateurs though the present performance makes it clear that the music is quite demanding though quite accessible. The idiom obviously bears the stamp of Bartok and Prokofiev with the occasional oriental touch. The slow movement actually quotes a Yemeni folk-song. The

Nettheim To: PianoWomenEditor Hello Rose, I've now placed a good deal more Maryla Jonas material on my web site at: http://users.bigpond.net.au/nettheim/jonas/jonaindx.htm There are now ten items, including a discography. I re-named the original 1947 article, and have included a notice to that effect. You might like to refer just to the index, given above. The sequel to the 1947 story is sad indeed. New for the page "Yesterday's Concert Pianists" Early in September a biography page for Dame Myra Hess was published at the Carolina Classical Collection , edited by Charley Moss. This is an excellent, concise article about this famous lady and she forms the inspiration for this month's Editorial Musings. Nigel Nettheim has expanded his offerings about Maryla Jonas into an index listing several rare articles about her life. This past month two readers (see Letters to the Editor ) introduced me to two great pianists from the past who have been neglected: Etelka Freund (b. Hungary, 1879; d. Zurich, May 27, 1977) and Lubka Kolessa (b. Lvov, Ukraine, May 19,1904; d. Toronto, Canada, 1997).

His research focuses on the present relationship between physical and digital performance art, and he is taking the current Future of the Present and Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art projects as case studies. However, he is also interested in contextualising these pieces in as thorough and contemporary way as possible, and he would be interested to hear from anyone who feels that they have work or information that might inform his study. Kol Simcha: klezmer concert Opening event
One of the world's best bands in contemporary klezmer, Kol Simcha appeals far beyond its Eastern European folk roots. With a super-tight rhythm section of acoustic bass, drums and piano added to the traditional klezmer clarinet and flute, the five man Swiss ensemble give a popular form of Jewish celebration music the refinement and sophistication of jazz, without losing any of the music's passion and good fun. From the wildly joyous to the exotically dark, deep and sad, Kol Simcha celebrates life in all its glorious extremes.

Concerts Tabea Zimmermann performs Partos We are proud to inform you that Maestra Tabea Zimmermann recently performed Song of Praise - Concerto for Viola and Orchestra No.1 by Oedoen Partos in a special Gala Concert with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro David Shallon, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the State of Israel and subsequently in several concerts of the orchestra on their tour of Germany, France and the Czech Republic.
Written in 1949, shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel, the Concerto was premiered by the composer himself with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Paul Paray. Since its premiere the Concerto has been performed many times in Israel and abroad both by the composer and by the violists William Primrose, Atar Arad, Daniel Binyamini and others. Ms Zimmermann's performance was enthusiastically recieved by both the audience and the critics. The Concerto will be part of the programme of the orchestra on their tour of the U.S.A. and Switzerland in April 1999.
