In due time, Great Performance Tours advertised a trip to the Schubertiade Hohenems for June, 1992, and I reserved a place on the tour. The actual venue of the concerts was Feldkirch, the oldest city in the Voralberg, in Western Austria. As a college student, I had studied briefly in Bregenz, the capital of the Voralberg, and I remembered Feldkirch and Hohenems from that time. It seemed to be a pleasant coincidence to be returning to that part of the world. The Schubertiade Hohenems had been in existence since 1976. One of its co-founders was Hermann Prey, who wanted to have a festival at which all of Schubert's works would be performed in chronological order. There is no historical connection between Franz Schubert and Hohenems, but there is a palace there with a beautiful wood-paneled room called the Rittersaal, which made an lovely setting for chamber concerts. The count who owned the palace agreed to make it available for the festival, and the city of Hohenems put up a considerable sum of money to carry out needed restorations to the palace. Our first concert, in the Konservatoriumssaal, was a performance of Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" performed by Brigitte Fassbaender and Uwe Heilmann, accompanied by pianist Cyprien Katsaris. I was suffering from the usual jet lag, but I was tremendously impressed by the beauty and power of Fassbaender's voice and the intensity of her performance. Uwe Heilmann, who was suffering from a cold, made his greatest impression by dashing on and off the stage so he could blow his nose. I was amazed at how "orchestral" Katsaris made the accompaniment sound.

Eero Tarasti brings up the possibility of the influence of Edgard Varese , a close friend of Villa-Lobos' during his stay in Paris. Other European influences that come up in Tarasti's analysis (p. 91-95 of his Heitor Villa-Lobos, 1995 ) are Debussy and Stravinsky.

"Dedicated to the sonorous atmospher of the primitive music of the aborigines of the states of Matto Grosso and Goias ." - HVL Villa-Lobos also dedicated the work to Oswald de Andrade (1890-1954) - one of Brazil's greatest writers - and his wife, painter Tarsila do Amaral (1897-1973.) One of the themes is borrowed from an Indian song melody, a drinking song of the Parecis Indians. As Villa-Lobos scholar Gerard Behague points out, this is a rare case of Villa-Lobos using an actual Indian song in one of his pieces. Instrumentation:

The Ives Quartet has captivated audiences from San Francisco to New York, Taiwan to London. Committed to presenting the full scope of the string quartet literature, the Ives Quartet continues to earn critical and popular acclaim for depth and diversity of its programming, with repertoire ranging from recognized classics and neglected masterpieces of the past to new commissions and distinctive collaborations with guest artists. Their success in commissioning such distinguished artists as Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom resulted in a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support a recording of contemporary American quartets. Released by Laurel Record, the quartet's first recording includes Bolcom's String Quartet No.10, Ben Johnston's String Quartet No.9 and Marc Neikrug's Stars the Mirror. Joshua Kosman of the San Francisco Chronicle described the performances as "shapely and impressive." The quartet's

Letter to the editor: Upcoming Festival Series could be the topper
Editor: Following our final University of South Carolina Beaufort Festival Series concert this past spring, which offered the Beethoven Septet, more than the usual number of audience members came to me saying, "This is the best ever, Charles, there's no way you can top this!" Well, friends, as I enter my seventh season in Beaufort, I'm going to try and I think I just may for our 2001-02 Festival Series concerts. My obvious ploy is to give Beaufort an octet. One of the two greatest is Schubert's, and his will be on our season's opener on Sunday, Oct. 14. In addition to favorite returning artists, the octet will feature violinist Soo-Vin Kim, winner of the International Paganini Competition's first prize and England's most important clarinet virtuoso, Emma Johnson. It will be a perfect beginning to a great season at USC Beaufort. Through the years the favorite chamber work of music lovers everywhere is Schubert's "Trout" Quintet. For our Dec. 9 concert we've engaged two major artists from Finland, violinist Elina Vahala and pianist Ralf Gothoni. Also making his first concert appearance in Beaufort will be Carter Brey, the great first cellist of the New York Philharmonic. You won't want to miss this remarkable combination of music and musicians.
