Re: Glenn Gould - Canadian writer, broadcaster, pianist and COMPOSER?
> Why did he not compose more if he so > desperately wanted to have part of his creative > persona labelled as 'composer'? Quoting from "Variations and variants" by Jacques Hétu: ..."Glenn Gould was not a performer like all the rest; Glenn Gould could not make do with playing a score; and through others' music, he imperiously communicated his own musical universe, because Glenn Gould was definitely a true creator". And like every true creator he found his own way: not traditional composition, but interpretation, at a different and higher level, of others' compositions; and sideway, the conception of his famous "docudramas", a new kind of art combining traditional media with ancient music structures and thoughts. So, definitely he gave the word "composer" a further meaning. >I also have a copy of Gould's piano pieces BTW have you also the score of the Cadenzas for the Beethoven's? Alfonso

The Ecstasy and Tragedy of Genius

Gould's personality warred with itself more than most. Among other things, he turned seclusion into publicity - an exhibitionistic recluse. Fundamentally an instinctual musician, he had to build Talmudic intellectual justifications not only for his interpretations, but for his repertoire itself. Few things irritated me more than hearing Gould construct a brief against some composer essentially because he didn't like him. On the other hand, few things were more wonderful or showed more insight than Gould on a composer he loved. were his, and there was a child-like pride he took in the fact that he arrived at them largely without "help." For example, why did Gould retire from live performance? Gould has written all sorts of justifications - most famously, his declaration of the "death" of the concert hall, due to electronic media - all of which smack strongly of "after-the-fact." Obviously he disliked public performance and disliked crowds. Ostwald talks about Gould's germ phobia, instilled in him by his over-protective mother, and expressed in his hypochondria, large private pharmacy, and practice of armoring himself in layers of heavy clothes. I would also mention that the repetition in concert life very likely palled on Gould, the artist compelled to come up with something new each time. How often can even a genius do this? And yet, Gould eludes us. Something doesn't quite add up.

The Psychology of Gould's Piano Technique
differed from Guerrero's, it was still related to it. Over the years, Guerrero earned credit by giving to his student a universal and unbiased cross-sectional training through the five centuries of piano music literature. However, whichever music piece Gould learned, he put on it his own finishing touch. In the world of athletics, competitors have to leave their coaches behind and pursue and attain the goal alone. Likewise, sooner or later, a trained pianist will have to walk on the stage by himself/herself and sit at that grand instrument without a whisper of support or an iota of coaching by his mentor. A pianist, indeed, is a special breed who more often than any other instrumentalist is supposed to sit at the center of a spacious stage and perform alone. Even more, he has to exhibit and "sell" his music assets and entertain his spectators for hours on end. It is all like a long solo drama where expectations are high, nerves are tense, and mistakes are not tolerated. In 1952, at the age of 19, for better or worse, Gould decided it was time for him to stop formal music lessons with Guerrero. Mrs. Gould vigorously disagreed, which Glenn took as a lack of empathy and trust in his capabilities. Guerrero opposed too. By not formally releasing his student from didactic classes, the teacher implicitly gave his opinion that Gould was not ready. In reality, Guerrero was not ready to let go of Gould, thinking that his job was not quite finished; the job being to rid Glenn of his extraneous piano behaviours. Guerrero, who successfully taught Glenn music, was powerless to change his piano mannerisms. The ambitious teacher fell short of completing the task of making Gould into a "normal" virtuoso. Distinguished music pedagogue, William Newman, says:

Glenn Gould, Lang Lang,
and les barricades mystèrieuses
by Angus Verspeeten
The Canadian pianist Glenn Gould burst onto the aural scene in 1955 with his ear-opening recording of the Bach Goldberg Variations. Now jocular, now limpid, by turns pensive and danceable , Gould's performance was a young man's discovery and celebration of life in one of the monuments of human art. As often happens with such monuments, so much serious scholarship and reverential playing had accreted to the Goldberg Variations that, until Gould, people had forgotten that it was a work of profound, though not unalloyed, joy. Thirty years later, shortly before his death, Gould recorded the variations again. If the 1955 version was a spring day in the Bavarian Alps, the 1985 version was a winter night beside the frozen Baltic Sea. Same music, same pianist, same world. But. But. In that "but" lies mystery, much the same mystery that we encounter in quantum physics, observing the electron just before and just after a quantum leap. What happens in that interim? Where does it happen? How? Why? Since Gould showed the listening world that there was a great deal more to Bach than stereotypical teutonic stoicism, other pianists, generally possessed of more bravado and a lot less talent, have had a go at the piece with decidedly mixed results.

Did you ever wonder how tall Glenn Gould was or what colour his eyes were? Are you interested in knowing what his advice to graduating conservatory students was, or hearing archival recordings of the pianist unavailable anywhere else? Perhaps the thought of off-beat photos of Gould disguised as some of the fictitious personae he assumed from time to time, or reading a doctor's analysis of what kind of patient the inveterate hypochondriac was, might pique your curiosity. All of these items, and many more, are now available in the comfort of your own home via the Internet. The National Library of Canada's (NLC) Glenn Gould Archive is an extensive site on the World Wide Web which is drawing increasing interest and praise. magazine (May 15, 1998) invites "lovers of Glenn Gould [to] curl up in front of their computers as their idol did at the piano" to visit the "documents, photographs and recordings [which] bring back to life the famous pianist on the Web". We hope that Gould himself, an outspoken apologist for the electronic media, would appreciate the NLC's use of the Internet to disseminate information and documentation found in his archives. We could think of no Canadian more appropriate for our first archival Web site. A quick survey of the digital Glenn Gould Archive yields the following highlights:

Some People Don't Like Gould. Listen Again. Biography
Glenn Gould's passion for using media technologies to communicate his ideas began at the outset of his long association with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In addition to his numerous performances on radio, Gould broke new artistic ground with his documentaries on radio and his television essays and performances. Now republished, his writings reveal a profound musical insight and are stimulating interests among new audiences. Glenn Gould's untimely death on 4 October 1982, just several days after his fiftieth birthday, was mourned by music lovers everywhere. Through his recordings and other contributions to the mass media, Glenn Gould has left a rich legacy of musical ideas and performances which continue to challenge and inspire new generations throughout the world. courtesy of www.glenngould.ca Biographical DVD As the title suggests, this dramatised documentary about the eccentric Canadian pianist Glenn Gould is broken up into thirty-two short films (mirroring the thirty-two part structure of Bach's 'Goldberg Variations', the recording that Gould made famous), each giving us an insight into some aspect of Gould's life and career. Out of respect for the music lead actor Colm Feore is never seen playing the piano, merely reacting to Gould's own recordings, which are extensively featured. Thirty-Two Short Films about Glenn Gould There are indeed 32 episodes, ranging in length from under one minute to just over six. Five of these are interviews, several have no dialogue, and three show Colm Feore's "Gould Meets McLaren", which features animated spheres dancing to Gould's music, and "Pills", which contains closeups of all the various medicines resident in the musician's bathroom. Some of the episodes are funny; some are poignant. In "Crossed Paths", Gould's friends recall his love of talking. One man remembers falling asleep while on the phone with Gould, then waking up hours later to find that the one-sided conversation was still in progress. "The Tip" recounts how Gould made a killing on the stock market by defying the advice of his broker. "Motel Wawa" presents Gould's views on the supernatural and the afterlife, which leads directly into "Forty-Nine", in which the musician expresses his fear of turning that age because the digits (four and nine) add up to thirteen.

Gould, Glenn 1932-82, Canadian pianist and composer. A prodigy, he began study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto at the age of 12. He was piano soloist with the Toronto Symphony at 14, and by the time he was 19 he was making concert tours in Canada. Despite his idiosyncratic behavior while performing, Gould is regarded as a great pianist. He was particularly noted for his interpretations of the work of Bach and the romantic composers. As a composer, Gould was influenced by the postromantic music of the late 19th century. His first published composition, a string quartet, had its premiere on television in 1956. During the 1960s Gould reduced his concert appearances to a minimum, preferring to concentrate on recording.
