Dr. Gary Smart Department Chairman; Professor; Piano and Composition Gary Smart's career has encompassed a wide range of activities as composer, classical and jazz pianist, and teacher. Always a musician with varied interests, he may be the only pianist to have studied with Yale scholar-keyboardist Ralph Kirkpatrick, the great Cuban virtuoso Jorge Bolet, and the master jazz pianist Oscar Peterson. A true American pluralist, Smart composes and improvises a music that reflects an abiding interest in Americana, jazz and world musics, as well as the Western classical tradition. Smart received his education at Indiana University, Yale University, and Hochschule fur Musik in Cologne, Germany. His composition work has been supported by the Ford Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Music Educator's National Conference, the Music Teacher's National Association, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His "Concordia" for orchestra won the Concordia jazz composition award, and was premiered at Lincoln Center, New York. Gary Smart's compositions are published by Margun Music (Boston), and his work has been recorded on Mastersound Recording (Toronto).

He was born October 20, 1901, at Quiet Dell, Pa., a son of William and Anna Wendt Caldwell, and was a member of Cameron First Christian Church. He was a retired employee of the Manufacturer's Light and Heat, and is survived by his wife, Myrtle Caldwell; one son, William, of Canton, Ohio; one brother, Henry, of Cameron; one half-brother Charles, and three grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Charles E. Anderson Funeral Home, Cameron. Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Sugar Grove Union Chapel, and burial will be in the Centennial Cemetery near Aleppo. Myrtle M. Caldwell , 84, of Star Route, Holbrook, died at 9:30 am Thursday, May 16, 1991, in Greene County Memorial Hospital. Published: Friday, February 20, 1998 Pianist to showcase Russian composer work Students get a chance to experience some Russian culture through music Quannah Leonard Arts Reporter An accomplished pianist will showcase the work of an experimental Russian composer at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Seretean Center Concert Hall. Arthur Greene, faculty member at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, will play the complete set of composer Alexander Scriabin's etudes. Etudes are a study of different technical aspects of music, including octaves and lyrical legato lines. Greene has won Gold Medals in the Gina Bachauer and William Kappell International Piano Competitions, and was a top laureate at the Busoni International Competition. The Philadelphia Orchestra, Czech National Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony are a few of the organizations for which he has performed. Greene also has given recitals in many well-known concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan. Gerald Frank, Oklahoma State University music professor, said Greene's reputation as a renowned pianist is evidenced by his numerous honors. "It was just really obvious that he would be a really fine performer," Frank said.
