The Art Of Singing
German baritone Matthias Goerne sings romantic art songs
Much of what makes Matthias Goerne's artistry so special is that this young German baritone launched his international career as a song recitalist before branching out into opera, instead of the other way around. A virtually peerless interpreter in the core repertoire of German lieder the 19th-century romantic art song of Schubert, Schumann, Wolf and Brahms Goerne possesses an impeccably schooled voice of uncommon warmth and expressivity, emitting poetic words with melodious translucence and a heart-surrendering sense of truth and urgency. Coming directly from the hallowed art-song tradition of legendary postwar German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Goerne himself is often mystified by the largely intuitive interpretive process. Speaking from his home in Hamburg, Germany, the singer says that "the important part is to touch the center of the piece, the human conflict contained in these songs," as he prepares for his unprecedented series of recitals in San Francisco this month, performing a triptych of Schubert's great songs cycles. The lieder repertoire is among the most erudite and cultivated genres of chamber music, often requiring analytical as well as technical skills from the interpreter. But, ultimately, Goerne believes that performers have to touch the audience with the inner confrontation the singer creates when he or she is onstage working with this material.

Music Notes
The only thing I could think about as I sat impatiently through the fifteen-minute delay at Shriver Hall last Saturday night, awaiting the appearance of pianist Helene Grimaud, was that I can’t stand classical music recitals. You see, not more than a month ago, while I was in New York for the break, I attended a concert put on by the Wild Ginger Philharmonic. Self-financed and chock full of some of the best musicians found amongst the crop at Juilliard and Curtis (two top-notch music schools), Wild Ginger put on a pretty different type of show in a little Upper West Side Presbyterian church — equipped with flying buttresses, Samsonite folding chairs, and just enough space to allow the sound to flow freely without everyone having to sit cramped together like sardines.
For starters, everyone there was young — at least under 25. (Except, of course, for the middle-agers that put up the bucks.) And believe it or not, the orchestra was dressed casually in tees and button-down shirts — untucked! — and baggy pants, in an array of colors. It actually took me a moment to notice this particular characteristic as my friends and I were still laughing up the fact that the group had just collectively screamed in unison as they ran out onto the stage, instruments in hand.
May I remind you I’m talking about a classical music concert? I know, I could hardly believe it either.

DAVID BOWER'S MUSIC ON THE WEB HISTORY SERIES The Piano Intermezzi of Johannes Brahms This page was compiled by David Bower, The intent of this series is to provide my students and others interested, in my perspectives on the repertory and the implications of historical considerations upon it, based on teaching and performing in in the New York City ares in the earliest years of this twenty-first century. Many of the perspectives generated on these pages are informed by conversations with current teachers, students and musicians looking back on several centuries of repertory in order to gain perspective on its role in today's international musical culture. General Background These following two paragraphs are a synopsis of the article in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg in 1833 and died in Vienna in 1897. He is thought of as a composer who "used a traditional sense of order in his music," a very classical approach, while living in a romantic age. On 21 September 1848 he gave his first solo concert as a pianist. While his output of instrumental music was not as great as his vocal compositions, he is nonetheless regarded as one of the greatest masters within the piano repertory.

A widespread societal transformation, engendered by Japan's new openness to the outside world during the 19th century, greatly impacted the print culture known as Ukiyo-e that flourished in the theater and courtesan quarters of Edo, or modern Tokyo. The three artists featured in this exhibition reacted differently to these changes, from initial fascination to eventual nostalgia. The lavishly printed bijinga, or "beautiful women" prints, and related theatrical woodblocks in the exhibition not only capture the ideal of fleeting beauty so highly esteemed by male audiences at the time, but also more broadly reflect longing for a vanishing traditional culture due to the rapid, often disorienting tempo of Japan’s modernization.

    San Diego Symphony's Masterworks Series
    From riches to rags to riches again, San Diego Symphony is on the rise. And its Masterworks Series is hard to beat. Profile Searching for a successor to artistic director Jung-Ho Pak and still basking in the glow of an unprecedented $120 million pledge received from longtime supporters Irwin and Joan Jacobs in early 2002, the San Diego Symphony gears up for its 2002-2003 Masterworks series. San Diego Union-Tribune classical music critic Valerie Scher spoke with symphony president and CEO Douglas Gerhart earlier in 2002: "What this gift represents is a new worldview it's a new day for us," said Gerhart, noting that the annual budget will rise from the current $8.75 million to an estimated $10 million-plus. Though not a huge change, the increased buying power means a larger roster of visiting virtuosos, such as violinist Chee-Yun, cellist Lynn Harrell and pianist Helene Grimaud. The season slated for downtown's Copley Symphony Hall and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido is also a turning point for the once-bankrupt orchestra, signaling a transition from a struggling regional ensemble to a financially confident organization in the national limelight. MASTERWORKS SERIES 2002-2003 Selected Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at Copley Symphony Hall; single tickets: $15-$70; subscriptions: $126-$700;

The array of music and talent is astonishing; the performances promise to be memorable. Since forming in 1993, they've hardly altered their core soundsummery melodies draped over metronomic groovesbut again and again they've subtly retooled other aspects of their music. Over the course of five albums Sam Prekop's vocals have grown more ethereal, the guitars have become more translucent and distant, and analog synthesizers and unfussy drum programming have come to the fore. The quartet does it again on One Bedroom (Thrill Jockey), its first album in three years, but you have to pay close attention to notice the change in direction. There's a bit of an edge to Prekop's singingon a song like "Left Side Clouded" he opts for a more natural, earthy toneand he multitracks his voice on the chorus of "Mr. F" for a playful sort of relay effect. Though there are still plenty of electronic beats and breezy bossa-nova-flavored grooves, drummer John McEntire sounds more forceful on a couple songs here than he has since the band's early recordson "Four Corners" he borrows a motorik groove from Neu! Guitarist Archer Prewitt is more aggressive too, selectively adding fuzz to tracks like "Left Side Clouded" and "Interiors." The quartet also tackles its first cover, a terrific version of David Bowie's "Sound and Vision" with guest harmonies by John and Frank Navin of the Aluminum Group. Grimaud is at her finest when playing Brahms and Schumann, and it is during these performances that her efforts go from being a vocation to a religion. A woman that takes her art very seriously, she has given us here a recording of almost unparalleled beauty, complete with subtile personal touches, and an attention to detail few artists her age can exhibit. Simply ignore the Amazon review -Helene is not Martha Argerich, nor does she strive to be. She is unique in her approach, and if one has the opportunity to see her play live, she should not be missed. Zinman is a fine conductor, and his efforts here pay off. Review Summary: One of the finest recordings of Schumann's Piano Concerto - Rating:
    Helene Grimaud's version deserves top billing alongside Perahia's two versions as the finest recent recordings of Schumann's piano concerto. Hers is a recording I fell in love with immediately, due to her warm, lyrical playing, not because she may be the prettiest celebrated pianist alive! She seems as celebral and as warm as Perahia is, playing all three movements at nearly the same tempi. Admittedly, the German Symphony Orchestra of Berlin isn't as well moulded an ensemble as either the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra or the Berlin Philharmonic, yet David Zinman does a fine job conducting, letting himself and his orchestra serve as sympathetic accompanists to Grimaud's commanding performance. Both Grimaud and the orchestra also give a fine performance of Strauss' "miniature" piano concerto.
