Customer Reviews for H©l¨ne Grimaud ~ Gershwin · Ravel - Piano Concertos Review Summary: A Decent Gershwin and a Great Ravel played by Grimaud - Rating:
If you're interested in hearing more of Grimaud's playing then buy this CD. However, her performances of the Gershwin and Ravel concerti aren't definitive. Indeed, her playing of Gershwin seems tentative, as though she admits her lack of comfort with playing jazz music or her unfamiliarity with Gershwin's music. She is almost immediately overshadowed by Zinman's energetic conducting and the vibrant performance he yields from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Much more successful is her fine performance of Ravel's Piano Concerto, which is as good as her earlier Denon recording with Lopez-Cobos conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. If you're interested in hearing her splendid playing of Ravel's music, along with Rachmaninov's, then you might be better off buying her earlier CD instead. Review Summary: Quite good but not the absolute best - Rating:
Well... this isn't likely to be a 'popular' review, but it will be honest. First let me say that Helene Grimaud is simply the best pianist I've ever heard recorded. I have her Brahms recordings and find her sense of expression, control of dynamics, and most importantly, warmth, unmatched by any other at the instrument. (The only way to get warmer would be to play the Intermezzi, for example, on a Boesendorfer Imperial...but that's another issue.)

Born in Aix-en-Provence, Hélène Grimaud began musical studies at the Conservatoire there and later in Marseilles with Pierre Barbizet. At age 13 she was accepted by a unanimous vote into the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. In 1985 she was awarded first prize in Jaques Rouvier's class and was invited to participate in master classes by Gyorgy Sander, Leon Fleischer and Jorge Bolet, who said of her, "It has been a long time, a very long time, since I have met a natural talent of such quality and musical sensibility." contact mailing list site map

Customer Reviews for Review Summary: A Great Beethoven 4th Piano Concerto - Rating:
Speaking of Masur and the New York Philharmonic, they are fine, unassuming accompanists. Their performance has to rank as one of the best they've given on behalf of an accomplished soloist like Ms. Grimaud (Only their collaboration with violinist Maxim Vengerov on Teldec's recently released recording of Dvorak's Violin Concerto might be better.). Once more, this has to rank as among the highlights of Masur's tenure as music director of The New York Philharmonic. Within the liner notes are a notes describing Ms. Grimaud's devotion towards wolves. Animal lovers of all kinds will be delighted. I commend her keen understanding of the wolf's importance as a key player in forest ecosystems around the globe, especially here in North America. Regarding her devotion towards music and wolves, I can only say je vous aime! Review Summary: Didn't do it for me.

Thursday, July 22, 1999 Pianist combines concert career with love of wolves
BY JANELLE GELFAND
The Cincinnati Enquirer
You'd hardly expect that a petite pianist who explores the cerebral beauty of Beethoven would be someone who also runs with wolves. Being a wolf owner and advocate in New York state is one side of pianist Helene Grimaud that the public rarely sees. But for Ms. Grimaud, 28, her educational work with wolves and her work with Brahms and Beethoven give her the best of two worlds. IF YOU GO

Kathmandu, Wednesday, 10 January 2001 INTERNATIONAL Berlin: Regional selfishness blocking economic upturn -Heinz Boschek, IN-Press, Germany This thinking also formed part of the decision taken this (read last year’s) spring by the aero-engine manufacturer BMW Rolls Royce-BRR- to expand its capacities in Dahlewitz, Brandenburg, and to fully relocate its management from Oberyrsel near Frankfurt/Main to the neighboring part of Berlin at the end of 1998. BRR director Klaus Nittinger had this to say: "here we have room for our expansion plans and, as Berlin develops in to an airport hub, we have an important market on our doorstep. Berlin and Brandenberg are basically condemned by nature to have synergies". Jurgen Linde, the minister in Potsdam, regrets that the Grand Coalition of CDU and SPD which is governing Berlin is n able to contribute to a responsible policy for the region as a whole e.g. for an integrated public transport system for Berlin and Brandenberg. A survey by the DIW shows clearly that, for example, that there is a high degree of integration between manufacturing companies based around Berlin and nearby suppliers. No matter what the public administrations of Berlin and Brandenberg are doing to harm each other, every second company in the area surrounding Berlin prefers to purchase upstream goods from other firms in the area or directly from Berlin. The unity of the economic area has become a reality and is far ahead of the political situation. So the pressure is growing. It looks like that there will indeed be a second attempt to merge the two states in 2004.

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra presents classical concert at Stevens Institute of Technology’s DeBaun Auditorium
On April 18, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra – world renowned for both its stellar performances and operating without a conductor – will present its first-ever concert at Stevens Institute of Technology’s historic DeBaun Auditorium ( www.debaun.org ). This public concert marks the first in a series of innovative, high-tech collaborations between Stevens and the New York City-based, Grammy award-winning orchestra.
The 8 p.m. concert on April 18 features guest pianist Hélène Grimaud. The program includes Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54; Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 in D major; and David Diamond’s “Rounds.” [See the end of this release for other details, including concert ticket prices, on this and other Orpheus events at Stevens.]
Young French pianist Hélène Grimaud has performed in many of the world’s finest concert halls since her 1988 debut with the Orchestre de Paris. Acclaimed for her performances of the great Romantic works, she is known worldwide as an exciting, intense pianist. She has been described by the New York Times as a musician who “leans towards extremes of head-long impetuosity and searching deliberation.”
The 27-member Orpheus Orchestra was founded in 1972 and performs an annual series of concerts in New York’s Carnegie Hall as well as making appearances in prestigious halls around the world. It has performed in more than 300 cities in 42 countries and has released more than 50 recordings worldwide on major labels such as RCA Victor Red Seal and Deutsche Grammophon (

Jarvi Demonstrates Great Skill; Maestro Inspires Indianapolis Orchestra
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer, September 25, 2000 His leadership in Saturday's concert in the Hilbert Circle Theatre resulted in inspired playing by the musicians, and twice had the audience of about 1,000 on its feet. Fratres (in a first performance here) and Brahms' Piano Quartet in G Minor , orchestrated by Schoenberg. The French pianist Helene Grimaud was soloist in Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor The 1,835-seat Hilbert Circle Theatre is a beautifully restored movie palace from 1916. The acoustics were warm, clear and particularly favorable to the strings. Fratres (Brothers), which he led without a baton. Inspired by medieval and Renaissance music, it was mystical and sustained, colored by drum taps and a low bass drone. Mr. Jarvi created a hushed, sonorous canvas, and the strings played with wonderful homogeneity. The Indianapolis Symphony has not played the Brahms/Schoenberg Piano Quartet in G Minor in 25 years, which explains why a first reading I heard on Wednesday was a bit ragged. Saturday's performance, though, told a much different story: the orchestra rose to the occasion with moments of truly brilliant playing.
