HYPERION CDA67411/2 (2 CDs) [153' 02"] In order to fully appreciate what Godowsky has done it is important to know the Chopin originals (some of the greatest piano music). However, even if you are not familiar with Chopin's inspired creations as he wrote them, Godowsky's commentaries on them retain (to a greater or lesser extent) Chopin's melodies - each can be appreciated on purely musical terms as a Chopin/Godowsky collaboration. And there are some real gems here to complement what Chopin left us. That this is so is due to Hamelin. Whatever difficulties the pianist faces (and they are considerable), Hamelin has overcome them and is able to play each of Godowsky's Studies as a musical entity. It says much for Chopin's genius - and Godowsky's imagination - that it was possible, for example, for Godowsky to write seven Studies based on Chopin's Op.10/5. Each has a different character but Chopin's original is omnipresent: it's like viewing the same object from various angles and seeing a different (but related) perspective. Hyperion's booklet is a model of how to present music that isn't heavily represented in the catalogue or, in this case, only known to piano cognoscenti. Godowsky's own introduction is included along with an essay by Jeremy Nicholas (an author on Godowsky) and comments by Hamelin himself. Add the top-notch production values of Andrew Keener and superb Tony Faulkner sound and this release cannot be faulted. I did wonder though if Hyperion has missed a trick by not adding a third CD and asking Hamelin to record Chopin's 27 Etudes as well - a complete package.

First-prize winner of the 1985 Carnegie Hall American Music Competition, Mr. Hamelin has won the favor of critics from the U.S., Canada and Europe. In fact, Harold C. Schonberg of The New York Times has described Mr. Hamelin as "a supervirtuoso." A native of Canada and the recipient of several awards from the Canada Arts Council, Mr. Hamelin studied at the Vincent d'Indy School of Music, then emigrated to the U.S., and earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music from Temple University. He has recorded almost 30 compact discs, and his recording of Charles-Valentin Alkan's Concerto for Solo Piano received 1993 nominations for both the Grammy and Gramophone Record of the Year. Earlier this season, Mr. Hamelin had performed in concert with his wife, Jody Karin Applebaum, in a "Classical Cabaraet" at Brookhaven Lab. He will perform solo in the April 13 concert, with a program that consists of Charles Ives' Piano Sonata No. 2, "Concord, Massachusetts, 1840-1860"; Johann Sebastian Bach's Organ Prelude and Fugue in D Major (transcribed for piano by Ferruccio Busoni); and Max Reger's Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Bach, Op. 81.
Tickets may be purchased at the door on the afternoon of the performance. No seats are reserved, so early arrival assures the best seats. Tickets cost $14 general admission, $9 for seniors, and $5 for students and youths under 18.

Plays Liszt (Hyperion) Wow. The monster pianist from Queen Village strikes again. Hamelin gets to display two sides of his musical personality in this recital. About half consists of late Liszt, quiet, mysterious, and harmonically complex. Hamelin renders this material with shimmering tone and gently undulating rhythms. The other side is the Liszt everyone knows, including fans of Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry . Hamelin plays the famous Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 with giddy, melodramatic style, and his own cadenza is both ingenious and sizzling. The "Don Juan" fantasy is similarly astonishing. There is no use in comparing Hamelin to the great masters of the golden age he so admires. He is fast becoming one himself. Peter Burwasser cover story news opinion ... contact us
