The art form is coming back into style (witness the New York revival of the edgy musical Cabaret, with Hamelin and Applebaum at the forefront of this resurgence. The pair has been performing cabaret music for several years now, and have released two CDs of cabaret music. Their first CD, Masterpieces of Cabaret (on the Music and Arts label), featuring music of Britten, Schoenberg and William Bolcom (who also performs music of the Cabaret with mezzo-soprano Joan Morris), and the second, Friedrich Hollaender: Songs of the Berlin Cabaret, (on the Helicon label) have both been well received by audiences and critics alike. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place in Temple University's Rock Hall, Broad St. above Cecil B. Moore Ave., on the University's Main Campus. Applebaum and Hamelin have presented their unusual cabaret repertoire throughout North America and Europe. Their fall schedule began with their debut performance in Munich, participation in the French chamber music festival Consonances and recitals in Toronto and again in Philadelphia.
In his career as a solo artist, Hamelin is widely regarded as a contemporary master of the keyboard. Applebaum, who maintains a passionate love for oratorio, has performed in major works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Rossini and Poulenc.

Not since the decades-old Shostakovich cycle by the Borodin String Quartet have we heard such a well-played, emotion-packed performance of the composer's complete string quartets. But the Emersons somehow outdo all other Shostakovich cycles available with this thoughtful and warm recording, capturing all the power, irony, and angst that Shostakovich infused in these pieces. KARINA GAUVIN, soprano "A voice that ravishes the ear with sheer beauty" and captivates with a "colorful pallet of vocal nuance" are just a few of the extraordinary critical comments offered about soprano Karina Gauvin. Her exquisite voice and exceptional technique have charmed audiences from the Royal Opera House in London to the 92nd St. Y in New York. Her vast repertoire covers music from J.S. Bach to B. Britten, and she has been heralded as "one of those rare artists who gives each song exactly what it needs." Karina Gauvin has sung with many major orchestras including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the New York Collegium, the Scottish Ensemble, I Musici de Montreal, Les Violons du Roy, the Handel and Haydn Society and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. Equally at ease in concert, oratorio, opera and recital, she has worked with conductors as diverse as Charles Dutoit, Christopher Hogwood, Bernard Labadie, Andrew Parrot and Christophe Rousset.

    The Husum-Festival

by Neil McKelvie As promised, here is a brief account of five days at the
Husum piano festival. All opinions by me may not represent the truth as seen by
others ! For those unfamiliar with the name, Husum is a rather sleepy seacoast
town in northern Germany, just below the border with Denmark. (The whole area
was Danish till Bismarck annexed it in the 19th century for the Kiel Canal.)
Husum has delicious fish and seafood, pride in being the hometown of the poet
Theodor Storm (famous in Germany), AND the Rarities of Piano Music festival put
on by the pianist Peter Froundjian every August. It also has a five-star hotel,
the Altes-Gymnasium, housed in a former boys' school, which charged me an incredible (by New York standards) 195 DM per night - less than $100. There are quite good hotels there which charge substantially less. However, the Altes- Gymnasium has a lovely Grotrian-Steinweg in a usually unused upstairs banquet room which they quite happy to let me play during the afternoon. Concerts: Sat night Aug 19th featured the UK pianist Hamish Milne. He played the L'Adieu

"I wish great success to Tallinn Piano Factory ESTONIA." Emil Gilels
"There simply is more music in this Grand. With its higher notes of greatly improved structure it also feature s more powerful sound volumes and keys, which yield to the slightest touch. The basses can be made to sound and reverberate like organ pipes, but nevertheless are clear to the lowest notes. The treble is delicate and effulgent, but, by no means only `bright`. Well proportioned, with exquisitely rounded corners, stands the Grand ESTONIA - large, beautyful and imposing." Svjatoslav Richter "I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how pleased I was to play the ESTONIA concert grand piano. It is indeed a wonderful instrument and has a lovely tone - which is the most important quality for any instrument."

Rzewski: extract from "The People United Will Never Be Defeated!", vars. 19, 20, 21

Get RealAudio To the uninitiated it is hard to describe the musical world of the American composer Frederic Rzewski. A pianist himself, Rzewski initially made a name for himself as a champion of the avant-garde, performing everything from Cage to Boulez. In the '70s his own music took a much more populist turn as his political beliefs drove him to find a much more approachable language, basically tonal and incorporating much quotation from popular music. It is music of this period that is recorded here. The People United Will Never Be Defeated! 36 Variations on a Chilean protest song, has been likened to a twentieth-century 'Diabelli' Variations. This lengthy work is a tour de force of compositional and keyboard virtuosity, exhilarating and emotionally all-encompassing in its effect. Marc-André Hamelin has been playing the work for many years and has become one of its greatest champions, though the fact that many other pianists have also taken it up confirms that the piece is becoming a twentieth-century classic. Similiar in idiom are the two North American Ballads that complete the recital; once again popular melodies are woven into a fabric which in Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues includes the stunning representation of the mechanical noise of the mill. Recorded on 27-29 August 1998 in Henry Wood Hall, London

Ruben Aharonian, Andrei Abramenkov (violins) lgor Naidin (viola), Valentin Berlinsky (cello) Undoubtedly one of the major quartets of today, the Borodin String Quartet was formed in 1945 by fellow students from the Moscow Conservatoire, changing its name from the Moscow Philharmonic Quartet to the Borodin Quartet in 1955. Cellist Valentin Bedinsky has been with the Quartet since its earliest days and violinist Andrei Abramenkov joined over 20 years ago. The Quartet's original violist, Dmith Shebalin, retired in early 1996 and was replaced by lgor Naidin, a 26-year old Russian who studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Yuri Bashmet. A founder member of the Quartetto Russo, Mr Naidin was also taught by two of the Borodin Quartet members, Mikhail Kopelman and Valentin Berlinsky. In November 1996 the Quartet announced the appointment of Ruben Aharonian, replacing Mikhail Kopelman as Leader. Mr Aharonian has won prizes at several international competitions, including the Enescu Competition in Bucharest, the Montreal Competition and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and is currently Professor of Violin at the Yerevan State Conservatory.
