C O M M E N T A R Y : C O M P O S E R S Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji: Alistair Hinton The legacy of Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji (1892-1988) is vast. Composer, pianist and critic, Sorabji was born in 1892 in England His father was a Parsi engineer from Bombay, his mother apparently a Sicilian-Spanish soprano. His published literary oeuvre embraces a wide variety of articles, reviews and "letters-to-the-editor" in English journals and two volumes of collected essays, Around Music (1932) and Mi Contra Fa: The Immoralisings of a Machiavellian Musician (1947). Brilliantly witty, eminently readable, provocative, controversial, pensive and trenchant by turns, their style ornate, elaborate and coruscating, the best are worthy of his inter-War peers whose main profession was literature. It is, however, as an enormously prolific composer that Sorabji is best known. He completed over 100 pieces between 1915 and 1984, many for piano solo, some of enormous dimensions. Some were published between 1919 and 1931; these publications came under Oxford University Press' sole selling agency in 1938 and finally sold out five days before Sorabji died in 1988. No reprints were proposed. Much of his work remains for the time being in manuscript only. Sorabji was an auto-didact who lived his life in self-chosen and self-made isolation and independence from the profession of music making. A reluctant performer who loathed public gatherings of any kind, Sorabji premièred a few of his pieces, most notably in Erik Chisholm's remarkable Active Society for the Propagation of Contemporary Music concert series in Glasgow in the 1930s. Sorabji's final concert appearance (December 1936) may have coincided with his decision to withdraw his work from the concert platform by vetoing public performances without his express consent, an unusual and courageous step that led to virtual silence for almost 40 years. Sorabji continued composing at a furious pace, blissfully undaunted by lack of public performances, approbation and criticism of what he was writing.

CONCERTANTE CHAMBER PLAYERS

STRAUSS: Metamorphosen; Capriccio Sextet Concertante Chamber Players Kleos 511164 minutes. (American Record Guide, November 28, 2001)
Farewell to Boheme Volume Two of Cabaret Songs

This is the third of Jody Applebaum's recordings of cabaret songs to come our way. Her collection of Berlin cabaret songs by Friedrich Hollaender was praised by Charles Parsons (Mar/Apr 1998). Here we have a mixed collection of French and German songs by Satie, Weill, Hollaender, Wolpe, Eisler, and several others most of us have probably never heard of. Mr Parsons described Applebaum's voice as tiny but amazingly agile. I wouldn't go so far as to call it tiny, but hers is a very light voice. Nonetheless, it's a clear, steady voice, one that's ideally suited to this sort of repertory.
Applebaum and pianist-husband MarcAndre Hamelin, whose numerous recordings are well known to our readers, make a terrific team in this most enjoyable music. Ordered chronologically, we begin with Aristide Bruant's (1851-1925) tuneful and often sentimental songs from 1884 and finish in 1939 with Hanns Eisler. In between we can trace the development of the cabaret song as its style changed from those that would have been at home (musically, anyway) in the Paris dance halls of pre-Dreyfus Paris to the more immediately recognizable style that Kurt Weill and other Berlin composers would bring to it in Weimar Germany. But while the musical style evolves, we readily see that the subject matter does not. During this long flowering the cabaret song remained a vehicle for social protest and commentary.

Wednesday, March 27, 1996 , piano. A fabulous young pianist fromQuebec, he has impressed people far and wide, including us last May. Marc is noted for incredible dexterity, power, and X-ray-like clarity. His unique program:
  • Dukas , Sonata;
  • Mozart , Rondo, K. 511 (his greatest pianopiece?);
  • Beethoven , Concerto No. 3 in c, Allegro - transcribed - for justone keybaord! - by the superpower 19th C. virtuoso Charles Valentin Alkan;
  • Liszt , Venezia e Napoli.
Extra note: Alkan was a legendary pianist, possibly the most virtuosic whoever lived (and that includes the legendary Liszt). Mar-Andre has become aspecialist in Alkan - which is a rare species, because his works are, toput it mildly, forbiddingly difficult, and they are also convoluted anddifficult - though I myself find them quite interesting and powerful.Anyway, in this arrangement, the pianist takes on both the orchestral ANDthe solo part, and that's fine during the bits where the orchestra playsalone or the soloist plays alone, but in the big tuttis, of course, allhell breaks loose. This is going to be an interesting one for thevirtuoso-aficianado, as well as musically. Paul Dukas is known to most people for just one piece, The Sorcerer'sApprentice. I blush to say that even I have never heard or even heard ofhis piano sonata. If Marc-Andre wants to play it, though, I want to hearit!

This is destined to become a legendary recording. Though Godowski’s 53 studies on Chopin’s (27) studies divide audiences and critics as to the merit of the concept, unarguable is the phenomenal pianism that is required to play these pieces at all, as Godowsky extends the parameters of required virtuosity. Marc-André Hamelin performs with "such strength, grace and agility, with an ease bordering on nonchalance - his virtuosity is pre-eminent because he is so musical, and it is impossible to think ofanother living pianist who could have carried of this enterprise with comparable success" (Gramophone). Awe-inspiring.

"Nobody plays Liszt more beautifully than ." Thus spake The Toronto Star, but audiences can hear for themselves when Oberlin College's Artist Recital Series presents the "supervirtuoso," as he has come to be known, in an evening of works by Schubert, Chopin, and, yes, Liszt. The concert takes place Tuesday, October 15, at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel. Hamelin will perform Franz Schubert's Sonata in A Major; Schubert/Liszt's Three Marches Souvenir de Paganini " in A Major; and Liszt's The French Canadian pianist is renowned for his musicality, unique talent, and refined pianism - and, according to Alex Ross, classical-music critic of The New Yorker , for his hands, which Ross counts "among the wonders of the musical world." Jeremy Eichler, writing in The New York Times , agrees: "He plays with his upper body almost motionless while his fingers rampage over the keyboard. He can dispatch withering accompanimental figures while trumpeting out melodies with bewildering clarity, spaciousness, and control." online The Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College sponsors the Artist Recital Series with additional support from the Friends of the Artist Recital Series. Media sponsorship for the Artist Recital Series is provided by WCLV 104.9-FM, Cleveland's classical music radio station, and WCPN 90.3-FM, Ideastream.

Listen carefully to marcandre hamelin's sparkling performance and you will hear Thepianist's wife, Jody Applebaum, delivers a bright, agile performance.
http://www.music.temple.edu/~maurice/Hamelin.html
MAURICE WRIGHT : Recordings It's nice to know that contemporary composers can be regular folks. Maurice Wright's Suite for Piano twists and turns and gurgles through an impressionistic journey, and as it turns out, the composer actually intended the work as a set of musical postcards describing a recent trip through the Rocky Mountains. Listen carefully to [Marc-Andre] Hamelin's sparkling performance and you will hear thunderstorms, rushing rivers, the gnashing of truck gears, and even the chugging of beers. The other solo piece [ Sonata No. 2 ] on this recital [CRI CD 660] is less whimsical, but shares the lucid and elegant style. Compared to the almost neo-classical restraint of the solo piano music, the Chamber Symphony is joltingly vigorous. The music just zips along, propelled by a series of upward sprinting motifs. The computer-generated "symphony" seems capable of an infinite variety of sounds, but Wright has shaped his tremendous resources with good taste, and in such a way that the timbral balance makes sense . . . In that respect, this work is a model of restraint . . . The song cycle Night Watch is enlivened by the subtle theatrical sense and wry humor that characterizes much of Wright's music. The pianist's wife, Jody Applebaum, delivers a bright, agile performance.
