M. Felix In a continuing effort to honor the different instrument groups of the Gold Country Chamber Orchestra, conductor and music director Henrik Jul Hansen and the orchestra will play "A Salute to Strings" at 8 p.m. Saturday at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, 23rd Street and Capitol Avenue. "Not that anyone needs an excuse to perform a salute to strings," Hansen said last week, "but we've kept refining the string group, and so far I am very happy with what's happened. Anyway, the strings are the largest section of an orchestra, so they pull a lot of weight and contribute mightily to orchestral and chamber music performances." Hansen and the orchestra's concertmaster Anita Fetsch Feliz came up with a program that will include Felix Mendelssohn's Octet arranged for string orchestra, Debussy's "Danse Sacree et Danse Profane" for harp and strings and Gabriel Pierne's "Impromptu Caprice." "To play the Mendelssohn, we will be expanded to 28 strings," Hansen said. "The composer said the players should think of the octet as symphonic music and that whichever way they would play a symphony, they should think of the octet exactly the same way."

JazzTimes Review Becca Duran's single vocal on Easy Does It (Discovery DSCD 956), Jay Thomas' sleeper album of a couple years ago, suggested a talent that deserved more exposure.Given a full hearing on Hide and Seek, she sustains interest in a recital of well more than an hour. Ms. Duran and Thomas are impressive, as are several of their sidemen, who are also from Seattle, a jazz center of growing importance. The singer's control, phrasing and intonation are good, and she is convincing in her interpretations. She is persuasive not only in English, but in Spanish and French and, as far as I can tell, in Portuguese. Superior songs like Ellington's All Too Soon, Monk's Ask Me Now and Rodgers and Hart's It Never Entered My Mind are perfect vehicles for Ms. Duran. Her womanliness and musicality carry even a novelty number like Lolito, the fanciful story of a performing parrot, and she is a flawless partner of Thomas' flute in the wordless unison melody of Jobim's Antigua. Enormous fusses are being made over budding talents promoted by major labels while a "new" player of Thomas' maturity and achievement gets little attention. On trumpet, Thomas' lyricism and harmonic inventions make him one of today's most interesting soloists on the instrument. His soprano saxophone and flute work on this album commands attention. On his own CD he played tenor saxophone with imagination, taste and an attractive tone. Thomas' arrangements (others are by Jack Perciful and James Knapp) and his balanced production of Becca Duran's album indicate a creative, rounded musician. The combined talents of Thomas and Ms. Duran, a singer to watch, make this a compact disc worth finding.

Back to album page Leisure Seattle's Jazz Master Of Five Horns By NAT HENTOFF As a teenager in Boston, the highlight of my week was the Sunday jam sessions in the city's clubs. In one of them, the band consisted of local musicians; many of whom had day jobs, and such mighty visitors as Sidney Bechet and Wild Bill Davison who made us Bostonians swing beyond our dreams. The music was straight ahead "hot" jazz. It made you feel good, even the blues. Those afternoons came back for me recently when I listened to the recordings of Jay Thomas, a Seattle trumpet player who quintuples on alto, tenor and soprano saxophones and flute. He doesn't play "Muskrat Ramble" or "High Society" the staples of the sessions of my youth. But as conversant as he is with all the jazz idioms going beyond John Coltrane, Thomas improvises with the joyous élan of his vintage progenitors. "The music," he says, "has the power to transform and fulfill like no other activity I know. It's sort of a compulsive-obsessive disorder." Or, as Isaac Stern put it, when it all comes together, "it's a kind of personal ecstasy." Mr. Thomas, at 51, is not a household name among many jazz listeners, although his recordings have been warmly reviewed in some of the jazz journals. He has appeared on more than 50 CDs, mostly as a sideman, and has a following in Japan, where he often plays.

Multi-instrumentalist Jay Thomas was greatly influenced by the Hard Bop pioneered in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. Foremost was the spell cast by Art Blakey and it is this influence that is most evident on 12th and Jackson Blues , where he plays like Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, and Wayne Shorter all rolled into one. A Hard Bop delight from start to finish. A native of Seattle before it was know for grunge rock, Thomas, the son of a Trumpeter, was heavily exposed to jazz throughout his formative years. He did time in New York and the Bay Area in the ‘70s before returning to Seattle in 1980. He has recorded widely with the likes of Herb Ellis, Slim Gaillard, Jessica Williams, and Chuck Metcalf. He has been a member of the Mel Lewis, Clayton-Hamilton Maria Schneider, and Bill Holman Big Bands. 12th and Jackson Blues is Thomas’ sixth CD as a leader and his second release by McVouty Records.

HOME BIO CD'S REVIEWS ... CONTACT Becca Duran is a Los Angeles, California native but she definitely found her jazz wings in the Pacific Northwest. A resident of Seattle, Washington, she is an accomplished jazz singer who, if you ask the top-flight jazz instrumentalists she works with, is known for the beauty of her sound, excellent time feel and superb phrasing. Her singing matches flexibility and purity of tone with intelligence, wit and sensuality. She tells a story and creates an ambiance in the best tradition of the art form. This is a vocalist who consistently delivers emotionally honest phrasing, true to the lyrics and melodies of a wide variety of re-examined jazz standards. Her recordings are equally well reviewed locally in her hometown of Seattle, as well as nationally in well-respected jazz journals and magazines. Becca first showed up on the Seattle jazz scene in the late 70s. She played gigs with many of the finest jazz instrumentalists in the area, several of them legends, including Red Kelly, Freddie Greenwell, Buddy Catlett, Floyd Standifer, Julian Priester, Bill Ramsay and Jack Perciful. She worked with other seasoned musicians like Joni Metcalf, Dean Hodges, Chuck Metcalf, Bob Nixon and Jim Knapp. Becca also performed with Dave Peterson, Denny Goodhew, Chuck Deardorf, Dave Coleman, Dean Johnson and Marc Seales, who, like her, were young players just beginning to make a name for themselves. pageID = 5; Presidents Message It is almost impossible for me to believe that a year has passed since my son committed suicide. The words spoken to me by the New York policeman advising me of Todd's death will be forever etched in my memory. The days and weeks immediately after Todd died were like a cloudy non-existence where nothing in the real world mattered. At some point in time I felt that I had so much to say about what a wonderful son Todd was: gifted, artistic, intelligent, caring, charismatic, supportive and how full of love he was. I decided that I could not see Todd's life being lived in vain. I wanted to honor and celebrate him - to tell everyone that although Todd suffered from a sleeping disorder, causing depression, he valiantly fought it. Todd always felt he had to keep up a good front for all of his family and friends so that he could help them with their challenges. As I learned more about mental illness, I found that one out of five people suffer from some form of this disease. It was hard for me to accept the statistics that suicide is the number 3 killer of our youth from the ages of 10 to 24 years and the number 2 killer from the ages of 24 to 34 years. As I talked to other people, I found that some form of mental illness had touched almost everyone. I decided that the best way to honor and celebrate Todd's life was to help others like him; to try to rid the world of the epidemic that robs people of normal lives and causes so much heartbreak for them, their families and their loved ones. Thus came the creation of the Todd Thomas Foundation, an organization committed to raising the awareness of the magnitude of mental illness and the effect it has on individuals as well as our society, to erase the stigma associated with it and to fund facilities that provide effective treatments.
