Born in Texas City, Texas, in 1922, he was a major force in west coast blues in the 1940's when he joined Johnny Moore's Three Blazers. He was a significant influence on Ray Charles and over the past decade, was the subject of a major career revival, sparked by Bonnie Raitt asking him to join her on tour. Charles' endless love for classical music and popular love songs shone through each and every performance and his energy and warmth flowed across the stage as a whole new generation discovered his glowing talent. A contemporary of Nat 'King' Cole in his early days, Charles helped popularize what became known as 'cocktail blues'; indeed, tho' his songs often told tragic tales, his velvet-coated voice overcame the subject matter, hypnotizing the listener as he caressed each well-crafted lyric. JazzChord by Eric Myers The pianist Tim Stevens, along with Nick Haywood (bass) and Tony Floyd (drums), began his sole performance at the Wangaratta festival at 4 pm on Sunday, November 5. Little did he, or anyone else, imagine that, about an hour later, he would be part of an Australian contingent invited to perform at the next Umbria Jazz festival (in July, 2001). Carlo Pagnotta was mesmerised immediately by Tim Stevens's work: his touch on the piano, his lyricism, his harmonic command, his intelligence, his taste. Pagnotta insisted on meeting Tim after the performance and, on receiving two copies of the Browne Haywood Stevens CD Sudden In a Shaft of Sunlight , announced that, the following week in New York, he would give one CD to his friend Bruce Lundvall of Blue Note, and the other to Tommy Li Puma of Universal. Tim might be forgiven for feeling somewhat vindicated by Carlo Pagnotta's immediate interest in his music. 1999 had not been a very good year. Tim had made the short list of ten for the semi-finals of the 1999 piano competition at the Wangaratta National Jazz Awards, but did not make the final three. In the 1999 ARIA awards, Sudden In a Shaft of Sunlight made the short-list of five for the Best Australian Jazz Release (out of 33 nominations), but was edged out by the Andrew Speight Quartet's self-titled bop CD.

Ike Turner Here and Now Ike was born in Clarksdale Ms., Novermber 5, 1931. His mother bought him a piano at age 7 after he was inspired listening to Pinetop Perkins practicing at Ike's childhood friend Ernest Lane's house. (Ernest is in the current Kings of Rhythm band playing piano). Ike quickly absorbed Pinetop's lessons and before he entered his teenage years he was backing up Robert Nighthawk and Sonny Boy Williamson at clubs and when they played live in the studio on radio broadcasts. Ike began to build his skills as a band leader and writer as a young teen. He also sat in with Riley B.B. King's pianist. King noted at the time: "I'd know Ike Turner from the Delta...Helluva piano player. Plus he could dance and organize a band. He was younger than me, but more advanced. Serious writer. Ike was in tune with the grown-up music when he was still a kid." In the early 1950s Ike brought talented musicians from the Delta to record at the memphis Recording Service, later named Sun Studios. In addition to recording his own sides with his Kings of Rhythm, Ike made recordings and acted as talent scout for Sam Phillips and the Bihari Brothers of Modern Records. Ike was on the piano on the first sides of Howlin Wolf, and B.B. King's first number 1 hit "3 O'Clock Blues" He also recorded Bobby Blue Bland, his dear friend Little Milton Campbell, and Elmore James, Junior Parker and more. In 1952-3 Ike began to play the guitar in addition to piano. Her recorded several sides for the Modern Label in the next few months that were later released as the album "Rock the Blues" which Lester Bangs says may have been "the greatest guitar record of all time." Ike's distinctive "Whammy Bar" sound was developed at this time is in evidence to this day.

THE MONARCHS first got together in September of 1957 playing dances at what was then the Madison Fire Hall. John Sturdivant on baritone sax, John Richards on Tenor sax, Ernie Winfrey on drums, and Donny Green on guitar. We picked up Willo Collins on guitar and Hershel Hopper on electric bass, piano and drums. Hershel was a versatile guy. The five of them played University of Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, U.T. and Vanderbilt frats as well as other college and high school frats and sororities throughout the south on a weekly basis for the busiest part of four years. The Monarchs opened shows for Johnny Cash (before he was country) Brenda Lee and Al Green. Hargis (Pig) Robins played piano on a lot of local gigs but could not travel with them due to the session obligations he had at the time. Louis Myers’ guitar is alternately sharp and greasy, laying down fleet lines on "You’re the One" and stinging staccato on "Don’t Throw Your Love on Me So Strong," and Dave Myers’ large and to-the-point bass playing is just about perfect throughout. Drummer Fred Below, "king of the Chicago beat," is rock steady and typically graceful, although Marcelle Morgantini’s vocal-biased recording is only fair and most of the band’s subtlety is lost in the murk. Butrum to serve the Niceville Church. However, since he had other churches in the Freeport charge, he preached only the fourth Sunday of each month. At first he held services in the High School; located on the west side of Boggy Bayou near the area of the present Nice-Valp Parts store. Later services were held in the Woodman of the World Hall, then located near First Baptist Church. Reverend Butrum served one year. In 1916 Reverend Gilbert served as pastor, followed by B. A. Sellars in 1917, in turn by J. M Mathison in 1918; then R. J. Coxwell in 1919 and W. F. Floyd in 1920.

But, like Defrancesco, he seems to gravitate more toward the rapid-fire soulfulness of Charles Earland and the modal funk of Lonnie Smith (though he avoids the otherworlds of Larry Young that Defrancesco sometimes explores). The result on this set, the third of his Palmetto releases, is a pleasing program of solid riffing on catchy jazz rooted in soul, gospel, funk and blues. Campbell, 85, of 511 Gue Rd. died Wednesday, January 23, 2002 in a convalescent center in Mt. Pleasant. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2002 at Sunnyside Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Barry Jenkins officiating. Burial in Sunnyside Cemetery directed by DUKES-HARLEY FUNERAL HOME. Mr. Campbell was born in Dickson, Tenn., a son of the late John Daniel Campbell and Lila Curtis Campbell. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1946 and was a member of the KA Fraternity. Mr. Campbell was a Colgate-Palmolive representative from 1947-1965. In 1965 Mr. Campbell became the Orangeburg City Treasurer and retired in 1986. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1948 where he served as deacon and elder. Mr. Campbell was an avid golfer and fisherman and was instrumental in the formation of Hillcrest golf course. He was a US Army veteran of World War II having entered the service at the age of 24 where he served from October 1942-January 1946 in Iceland and Europe. He attained the rank of Captain. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Katherine Still Campbell, of the home; 2 sons and daughter-in-laws, Michael Ransom Campbell and wife Nedra, Isle of Palms, S.C. and William Curtis Campbell and wife Tamra, Orangeburg, S.C.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Lila C. Stopinski, Tullahoma, Tenn. and Mrs. Ann C. Buchanan, Deland, Fla.; 2 grandson, Madison Roe Campbell and Hayden Lee Campbell both of Isle of Palms, S.C.; a granddaughter, Evan Alexandria Campbell, Orangeburg.

Steve Clarke New York City / USA I'm playing every week with 4 or 5 bands, teaching at Fairfield University 2 days a week and lesson out of home 2 days a week. In between I run a project studio for local talent. So you see I'm involed in music in more ways then one. I love playing the most and try to play as much as possible these days. Main band is Sherry Winston ( flutist out of New York). Kind of Smooth Jazz if you most have a title. Then there is Walter Duda Band ( Pianist ) and a band called OFF THE HOOK, which is Acoustic guitar, Congas and Bass. Its a fun gig. Putting together own band ( hoping a 6 piece) will have 2nd Bass player. That is 1st priorty 2002. I have new CD out, not in stores yet, sold in Czech Republic,and Germany while on tour. Steve Clarke was born and raised in the "Hollow" of Bridgeport, CT and later moved to the east end of Bridgeport. He is the sixth of twelve children born to Haywood and Ruthe Clarke. Steve is from a musically inclined family. His father played the trumpet along side the late Eddie and Bobby Buster from New Haven, CT during the 1950's. His oldest brother Haywood was also a jazz musician. Additionally his other brothers played trumpet, bugle, and cornet particularly in the drum and bugle corps.
