She was a song temptress, an entertainer through and through, and she was just beginning to hit it big when she passed away in 1988 from colon cancer. At the time, she was living in San Diego, California, where she had just begun work with Fattburger . Her golden throat, which she proudly modeled after Aretha Franklin , was captured one last time on the band's 1987 release, Good News . Personally, I felt very strongly that Billy Bob Thornton deserved the statue for his outstanding turn in SLING BLADE , but as you know, when it comes to the Academy Awards ‘deserves’ has nothing to do with it. My guess is Rush was honored because SHINE is one of those triumph of the human spirit films that the Academy loves to honor. SLING BLADE on the other hand well, the guy murdered his own mother! We can’t award the statue to an actor playing that part no matter how impressive the performance. Rush has a bit of screen time at the film’s opening, but then two other actors, playing his character at younger ages, take over. Only in the third act does Rush return. Make no mistake though, it’s an outstanding performance it was simply too short to deserve Best Actor consideration.
