Biography
David Helfgott
Pianist Australia Born 19 May 1947
David Helfgott was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1947 to Polish-Jewish parents. Following a move to Perth in 1952, David showed extraordinary pianistic talent. In his teens, he won the state finals of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition six times, and his talent brought attention from Daniel Barenboim, Julius Katchen and Talas Vassary. Isaac Stern was so impressed with David's playing at 14 that he urged overseas study for the young prodigy. However, it was not until five years later that David went to London to study at the Royal College of Music with Cyril Smith.
In 1970, however, mental illness overtook Helfgott and he returned to Perth and a decade of obscurity. He emerged only in the 1980s, giving his first major recital for 12 years in June 1984. Two years later, David returned overseas for study with the great teacher, Peter Feuchtwanger. Recitals in London, Bonn, Vienna, Budapest and Copenhagen followed, to critical acclaim.
He became the top-selling classical artist of 1997, The New York Times hailing him as its most influential classical musician of the year and Billboard magazine naming him classical musician of the year, and his CD classical record of the year. Among many other awards, Helfgott was given a Time for Peace award at Carnegie Hall, chosen by the ambassadors at the United Nations.

Tickets: $60, $80, $125, $150 from SISTIC by Rebecca Wan The first film I ever watched in a theatre was AMADEUS (Forman, 1984), and I came away from it firmly believing that that crazy nut Salieri killed Mozart by dressing in a mask and telling him to write his own requiem. Years later, when I watched SPARTACUS (Kubrick, 1960) for the first time, I didn't think there was any reason not to believe that the real slave Spartacus wasn't crucified at ..., nor that high-level Romans were oyster-stuffing debauches with British accents who used food metaphors to make sleazy overtures to their slaves. Many other such "autobiographical" films that sensationally distort history have caused historians distress, but what happens when films are about living legends? Several Oscar-nominated films down the line from AMADEUS, the controversy surrounding the 1996 film SHINE stirs up curious questions about the degree to which artistic license should be allowed to stray, and the effect of populism on the classical music world. SHINE, directed by Scott Hicks, tells the story of the child prodigy David Helfgott, an Australian pianist whose early musical success is derailed by the onslought of mental illness, apparently the result of parental pressure, and he is institutionalized for more than a decade. Things improve when Helfgott recovers and meets a wonderful woman who helps to heal him and later becomes his second wife. His career as a classical pianist is restored to full brilliance.

In 1997 Grove Press published Jan Sardi's screenplay for "Shine." The quality of the pictures leave something to be desired, but there is production and biographical information on all the key players. On November 8, 1997 "Shine" was given a Studio Crystal Heart Award from the Heartland Film Festival Shine also won the Time for Peace award. The November 3, 1997 New York Daily News reports: "The Time for Peace award is so prestigious to movie types that when actress Maria Grazia Cuccinotta won it last year, Miramax spent $140,000 to shut down a set so she could attend the awards ceremony. This year's prize, for people who make positive contributions to society through art, goes to Celine Dion, pianist David Helfgott and the two actors who played him in "Shine": Noah Taylor and Geoffrey Rush. The Nov.17 dinner at Lespinasse will fund a scholarship for a talented but financially strapped Juilliard student."

Runtime: Approx. 104 Minutes
Rating: ***** out of *****
This biographical portrayal of Australian piano prodigy David Helfgott, side-tracks the clichéd tactics but opts for recurring images and phrases to express the inexpressible contained within the emotionally disturbed 40-year old. The film is told in a s eries of flashbacks, each transition emotive without the loss of the sense of the main character, David (Geoffrey Rush). While director Scott Hicks tells the tale in a restrained manner most of the time, the driving force of the film lies within Armin Mue ller-Stahl who plays David's father, Peter. We see in the 50s, Peter, the loving yet ever possessive father, obsessed with cultivating young David (Alex Rafalowicz) into a world class pianist. Although Peter lacks musical training, David's natural talent takes over and impresses one of the judges, Ben Rosen (Nicholas Bell) during a piano competition. After much persuasion, Peter allows Ben to coach his precious son, eager for David to master "the most difficult piece in the world", Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3.

Book about 'Shine' pianist Helfgott less enlightening than film
"Love you to bits and pieces: life with david helfgott," by Gillian Helfgott. Penguin. $11.95. By Robert McCrum, London Observer Service
Books and movies are, we know, very different art forms, and it's unwise to search in the one for the qualities we admired in the other.
"Shine," the true story of the Australian child prodigy David Helfgott, has been extravagantly praised, with some justice, as a "film of the year" (of course, it's early yet). Director Scot Hick's account of a phenomenally gifted young pianist whose brilliant career was derailed by the combination of his Jewish emigre father's obsessive demands and his own insecurities until he was rescued by the love of a good woman, contains more than enough Freudian archetypes to satisfy the contemporary hunger for such stories.
That it should also have, as its backdrop, the ash-strewn landscape of Auschwitz makes it all the more thrilling as a tale of love triumphing over adversity.
It's also generally true that the better the film, the worse the spinoff. So it comes as no surprise that this book (first published in Australia), which presents itself as "the true story that inspired the movie," should be not merely worse, but actually even less informative about this "true story" than the film.

BOSTON David Helfgott's day started out like any other, with a morning swim and exercise. But the Australian pianist whose painful comeback from mental illness was depicted in the movie "Shine" had something special on his agenda yesteray.
Denied a chance to study music in the United States as a child, the 49-year-old Mr. Helfgott was making his American concert debut.
Was he relaxed? Nervous? Worried he could not live up to the hero's billing? Worried the public might come to agree with music critics who say his performances are often uneven?
It was hard to tell.
Mr. Helfgott was under tight wraps by the private producers of the tour. His wife, Gillian, movie director Scott Hicks and others fielded questions at a hotel as Mr. Helgott was said to be upstairs doing push-ups
"He doesn't get nervous, he gets excited," said Gillian, who married Mr. Helfgott in 1984 and helped stage his comeback. "David is just purring," she said.
She said the refusal of Mr. Helfgott's father to allow him to accept a scholarship and study music in America as an adolescent haunted him for years. The movie attributes that refusal and other harsh treatment by his father as the reason for his many years of mental problems.

Full Name David Helfgott Occupation Pianist Birthdate May, 1947 Birthplace Melbourne, Australia Obtained from Personal acquaintance Posted by 1- Austin Prichard-Levy Comments "I produced two of David's CDs, Brilliantissimo and Brave New World , for BMG Classics (you can check the album liner notes for verification). I had heard a lot about his student days at the Royal College of Music from people who were there with him, including some stories indicating he possesses perfect pitch (for example, he can play anything on piano he's just heard on radio, like a symphony or whatever, it doesn't have to be piano music, he remembers about 48 hours of music, he can play pieces he hasn't looked at in 20 years etc). Before taking this at face value, however, I decided to conduct some objective tests of my own. While recording Brilliantissimo , I asked David to name notes that I picked out at random on the Bechstein piano in the hall where we were recording, while he was off changing in a dressing room well out of sight, but not out of earshot. He correctly named every note I played. I then played a strange 8-note chord with lots of unusual intervals in it, and again he named each note in the chord without hesitation. I have to say I was impressed!" [1] RELATED ITEMS David Helfgott Books Love You to Bits and Pieces : Life With David Helfgott - Gillian Helfgott, Alissa Tanskaya

We see how too much love can destroy.
It is crucial that the "Rach 3," as it is called in the film, was not replaced by a simpler, more manageable piece.
There are significant links between the Russian composer (Rachmaninoff) and the Australian pianist: both were child prodigies, both were internationally known in their teens, both went into extended periods of depression and unproductivity, and both were subjected to exotic treatments and therapies before being restored to active creative life.
David Helfgott
At one with both genius and madness
"Rachmaninoff means the world, really... It's got emotion, humor, everything. Very wistful. It's uplifting. Life is a symphony."
David
Shine star Geoffrey Rush describes Helfgott recitals as highly informal affairs. The extroverted pianist hugs and kisses people in the front rows, and his wife, Gillian, gently shepherds him toward the keyboard.
In other words, he's disarming. "When you first meet him, you're confounded and overwhelmed. He shifts the ground," Rush says. "But then you're able to catch the wit and insights of his speech."

Critics seem to be of one mind when it comes to David Helfgott, Shine 's real-life hyperkinetic piano player. As a film subject , he's brilliant and inspirational, the stuff of Oscar. But as a pianist, he's downright awful. On the eve of his first American tour , the manic Helfgott has come under fire from the notoriously staid arbiters of classical music, who have excoriated his best-selling CD, David Helfgott Plays Rachmaninov the film's dreaded Rach. 3 Audio Clip: David Helfgott, "Finale: Rach 3"

A Baltimore Sun critic panned the Helfgott phenomenon as "a new low in standards for classical music." "Mr. Helfgott is a dreadful pianist," David Dubal, a member of the piano faculty of Julliard, told Newsweek The New York Times was a tad gentler, saying Helfgott's recording, "though it shows heart and glimmerings of things that once were, is a mere approximation of a multifaceted masterwork." Critics aren't much kinder when it comes to his current world tour, which began February 16 and makes its U.S. bow in Boston tomorrow evening. New Zealand and Australia reviewers have roundly savaged performances, calling them circus acts.
