BOB GARFIELD: In a place as large and as diverse as America, there's no single program that can qualify as a universally shared cultural experience. Certainly not this one. So in our time of crisis, common threads that unite us are not all that easy to find. On the Media's Sara Fishko looks back to an earlier era for inspiration.
SARA FISHKO: Since September 11th I've found myself thinking about Dame Myra Hess. Myra Hess was a British pianist who became world famous as the organizer and performer of lunchtime concerts in London during the Blitz in World War II.

The Mature Performer Recently I was skimming through Stewart Gordon’s book, “Etudes for Piano Teachers”, which just came out in paperback, and my attention was drawn to several sentences in the chapter “Feux Follets” where he discusses performing necessities, beginning with charisma: “Particularly interesting are those artists whose charismatic index has soared with maturity, often with even middle or late years. These artists have often sustained a career over the years, on a less spectacular basis, on qualities other than the instant appeal of this type. They suddenly find their index rising rapidly as they begin to project such qualities as maturity, authority, and the simple fact of having successfully met life’s problems square on and emerging beautifully with strength, wisdom, and compassion.” Having just read a new online biography of Dame Myra Hess I though of how this quality was wonderfully demonstrated in her life, who began her “finest hour” along with England, when she was in her fifties during the Second World War. Her leadership in organizing and participating in the concerts in London throughout the war, despite the bombings, will always be remembered as one of the grandest achievements in the life of any concert pianist, man or woman.

BBC Legends - Great Performers Of The Twentieth Century
This acclaimed series on the BBC Legends label is certainly a series that is part of the classic repertory ever recorded for orchestra. The New York Times and San Francisco Examiner have both proclaimed this series as one of them most important recorded musical discoveries to be released. These new releases of Benjamin Britten as a conductor and pianist bring new meaning to this great composer, musician, and innovator of 20th century opera.
The BBC Legends series has created much excitement for more than just CD and record collectors of great classical performers. They have given classical music lovers the ability to hear great artists in rare performances that are of exceptional sound quality and artistic achievement.
Dame Myra Hess (1890-1960) was a pianist with a commanding yet unobtrusive technique who specialized in the Austrian/German masters. Hess was one of those rare legends who was equally recognized for her contributions as a teacher and a performer. The performances on these new BBC Legends recordings (BBC 4028) were recorded August 12, 1960 at the Royal Albert Hall and on September 12, 1957 respectively. The works performed are Beethoven's Piano Concerto Nos. 2 and 5, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Malcolm Sargent. Included on the CD is a special bonus track of a rare June 1962 interview with Dame Myra that has never been heard.

Rutledge will open the program with a solo performance of the Suite No1 in G major by J.S. Bach, originally written for cello. With Nosikova, she will play the Sonata No. 1 in C minor by York Bowen, and the Cesar Franck Sonata in A major, originally written for violin and piano. "This program is an interesting blend of original compositions for viola and transcriptions," Rutledge said. "The Bach Suites are often played on viola, since the transcription only requires that the suites be played one octave higher than the original cello version. "The Franck Sonata is played about as often on other instruments as it is on the violin, its original instrumentation. It is most often played on cello or flute, but violists consider it a major part of their repertoire, since there is not a wealth of literature for our instrument from this particular period. The transcription that I will be playing keeps the viola in the original key of A Major and also keeps most of the original range of the violin, rather than the standard method of taking most passages down the octave."

    Stephen Kovacevich
There can be few pianists who are on par with Stephen Kovacevich. His mastery of piano, his superb, profound, often radical, approach to music, especially to those of Beethoven, has made him one of the most respected pianist this world has ever had. Born in 1940, in Los Angeles, Kovacevich has studied with Lev Shorr. He made his début in San Francisco in 1951. During his younger years, Kovacevich had enjoyed playing his favourite composers' works - Chopin and Liszt. He went to London in 1959 to study with Dame Myra Hess, as a scholarship student. It is through Dame Myra Hess that Kovacevich fell in love with Beethoven. Even though many years has passed, Kovacevich still pays his tribute to Dame Myra Hess, for she has greatly influence his playing and musicianship. Kovacevich made his London début in Wigmore Hall in 1961. He has since travelled around the world, giving solo recitals and appearing as soloist in concertos. Kovacevich is also active in recording industry. He is currently working on a project to record all Beethoven's piano sonatas, under contract with EMI. Larry Bitensky, assistant professor of music, says "In the 19th century, etudes were written as technical studies for pianists, and the technical demands of Chopin's Etudes are tremendous. However, Chopin's Etudes were a true innovation in composition as well and are a remarkable example of a composer building large, musically satisfying works out of a single technical idea. All pianists at some point in their development must come to terms with several of the etudes.
"It really is quite a feat of nerve as well as technical ability to perform the entire set as NADA will be doing."
NADA is a native of Beirut, Lebanon. Her early piano training was hampered by the unrelenting civil war and terrorism, which took her mother's life in a mortar explosion.
After seven years of playing the piano (mostly self-taught), NADA was admitted to the Paris Conservatory. She was the first woman from the Middle East to take first prize in piano. She pursued advanced studies at Indiana University and the Banff Centre in Canada.
NADA has performed in Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Australia and the United States. Her concert engagements have included Salle Gaveau (Paris), Salzburg Festival, Louisville Orchestra, Dayton Arts Institute, Kilburn Hall (Eastman School of Music), Jupiter Symphony (New York City), and Dame Myra Hess Series (Chicago), as well as prestigious events for the ministry of France and the President of the United States.
