Debut Atlantic Artists do get around, don’t they?
Jasper Wood releases new disc to critical praise

Violinist Jasper Wood’s recently released CD, 13 Caprices (Analekta-FL2-3149) has received unanimous praise from publications as far afield as the International Record Review (April 2000) We should hear more of this composer’s work, especially in such flawless performances as Jasper Wood gives on this occasion. Here is another discovery - he is a fine interpretive artist, captured in a virtually unblemished recording which is acoustically just right.
Visit Jasper Wood's website. http://www.jasperwood.net
Richard Raymond makes his Paris debut
Mr Raymond toured with Debut Atlantic in 1992 and with violinist Jasper Wood in 2000.

Yegor Dyachkov to debut at Lincoln Centre
For cellist Yegor Dyachkov, who toured with Debut Atlantic in November 1998, with pianist Nari Matsuura, October 29, 2000 was a special day; on that day Mr Dyachkov made his New York recital debut at Lincoln Centre
He was recently declared the winner of the" Young Canadian Musicians Award" given annually to a young and promising Canadian classical music artist. The selection committee for this award, worth $15,000, was made up of three distinguished Canadian musicians: Anton Kuerti, piano, Russell Braun, baritone, and Peter Oundjian, violin/conductor.

NADA MARIA LOUTFI
NADA LOUTFI: PIANIST
Regarded as a national treasure in her native Lebanon, Nada Maria Loutfi has become a favorite of audiences in the United States and Europe. Nada began her piano studies in the midst of the war in Beirut where, for seven years, she was confined to a mountain exile. With the Bach Conventions and Chopin Waltzes as her only teacher, she was admitted to the Paris Conservatory. There she won the First Prize in Piano. Nada's engagements have included Salle Gaveau (Paris), Salzburg Festival, Jupiter Symphony (NYC), Louisville Orchestra, Dayton Arts Institute, Kilburn Hall (Eastman School of Music), Dame Myra Hess Series ( Chicago), American University in Beirut. Her private performances include concerts for President Clinton and The French Ministry of the Navy and she has performed live on NPR 's " Performance Today", French National TV & Radio, and on Arab international channels. Now living in New York City, Nada is involved in several projects including the Salon Concert Series, a "Concert Tour for Peace" in the Middle East, and an upcoming concert with the Greenwich Village Philharmonic Orchestra. On her new album Nada performs Brahams, Fantasien Opus 116, Capricco in D major, and Dukas, Sonata in E-flat minor.

(18 Characteristic Pieces), Opus 6
Arabeske, Opus 18
Humoreske, Opus 20

Since her professional debut in 1957 at the age of seventeen, when she performed the formidable Third Concerto by Rachmaninov, Ann Schein, has concertized all over the world. Her teachers included Mieczyslaw Münz, Dame Myra Hess and Artur Rubinstein. She is currently on the piano faculty of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. This all-Schumann disc is her debut recording on Ivory Classics. Closely associated with these Schumann masterpieces for over forty years, Ann Schein interprets these works with a rare understanding and authority.
"In the 1960's the American pianist Ann Schein had a big success with Rachmaninov's Third Concerto. Davidsbundlertanze and Humoresque have been part of Schein's repertoire since the early days of her career- indeed she played the former at her Carnegie Hall debut in 1962. Schumann's popular Arabesque is performed fluently, the coda beautifully contemplative. Recorded at Spencerville Church in Maryland, the sound is resonant and full." International Piano Quarterly — Summer 2001
"Wonderful playing continuing the tradition of two of her teacher's, Rubinstein and Hess. Technically impeccable, grounded in the Russian tradition - interpretatively simple and direct a la Artur, warm enveloping tone included. I strongly urge you to purchase this disc; you will see that in this modern age, the Romantic School of piano playing lives on."

Over the past seventeen years the Hess concerts have helped launch some of today's brightest stars, including sopranos June Anderson and Barbara Hendricks, violinist Nigel Kennedy, cellist Nathaniel Rosen, and pianist Barry Douglas. Young People's Concerts often serve as school children's introduction to classical music, and concerts by young people's ensembles, such as the City Youth Strings provide valuable performance opportunities for youth. 51. THE HUNGER OF A WARTIME CORVETTE SAILOR FOR MUSIC
All through the War, amidst falling bombs and rockets, dame myra hess, the legendaryEnglish concert pianist gave concerts for the sailors, soldiers and airmen
http://home.istar.ca/~fcurry/writing/music.html
THE HUNGER OF A WARTIME CORVETTE SAILOR FOR MUSIC Countless Canadians have made their way to Trafalgar Square during their visits to London. There, they have joined the crowds, fed the pigeons, admired the towering tribute to Nelson and his glorious triumph-and more than likely, admired the fine 16th century church that towers on one side of the Square. St. Martin in-the-Fields. My first visit to this historic heart of London was far removed from that of a tourist. I was a wartime sailor who spent five and a half years on a corvette in the North Atlantic convoys and a bangor in the English Channel scraping the beaches at Omaha Beach in the pre-dawn darkness of June 6, 1944. Apart from the constant presence of death and destruction, the terrible life on wartime ships, the relentless and unforgiving North Atlantic in all its furies, I knew what it meant to be cut off from all the finer elements of life in a peaceful world. There were a few paperback books circulating on a corvette, a handful of old fashioned records playing the Andrew Sisters over and over again, no concerts, no Saturday radio broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera, no symphony music, a total absence of anything to soothe the soul of a wartime sailor isolated by the relentless unending forces of War. Our ship, operating non-stop in the English Channel, along the French Coast from Brest to Bordeaux made brief returns to The Solent off Portsmouth and on rare occasions, seaboats would lug a few off duty sailors ashore for a strict twelve-hour shore leave. A few of us would quickly find the railway station and catch the next train to London for our first encounter with this great city that had suffered and survived the terrible bombing and now facing the terror of German V-1's and V2 rockets.(We had already encountered them in the Channel)

SEATTLE SYMPHONY

As part of its "Shostakovich Uncovered" festival, the SSO tackles the famed Russian composer's Symphony No. 13, subtitled "Babi Yar" after the infernal burial ground where 30,000 Jews were massacred outside Kiev. Ignat Solzhenitsyn, son of the novelist Aleksandr ( The Gulag Archipelago ) Solzhenitsyn, is the soloist in Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1. Also Fri Jan 24 at 8 pm.
PONCHO SANCHEZ LATIN JAZZ BAND
After the passing of Tito "El Rey" Puente, the title "King of Latin Jazz" has been up for grabs. It may be anathema to some to speculate that the California-based Poncho Sanchez is the top candidate, but his group has it all: tight charts, great soloists, and jaw-dropping percussionists. Do not miss this gig. Also Fri Jan 24 and Sat Jan 25 sets at 8:30 and 10:30 pm, and Sun Jan 26 with sets at 6:30 and 8:30 pm. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, sets at 8 and 10 pm, $20.50/$24.50. FRIDAY JANUARY 24
MUSIC OF MYRA HESS

During World War II, pianist Myra Hess was brave enough to stage concerts amidst the raining bombs of the London Blitz. In honor of Dame Hess, a tag team assortment of UW pianists duplicate Hess' first concert of works by J. S. Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, and Debussy. Also, pianist Julie Ives premieres an as yet untitled new work, which presumably addresses one (or all) of the wars going on today.

http://www.heraldica.org/topics/famous/knighthd.htm
British Honours in Music
Here is a (no doubt incomplete) listing of some British composers and musicians who earned knighthoods, baronetcies and peerages. The first musician to be knighted in Britain was Bishop in 1842. From the looks of it, composers were at least as frequently honored as conductors, if not more, and the practice began somewhat earlier for composers. Sir Thomas Beecham was knighted on Jan 1, 1916, and inherited his father's baronetcy (which was 2 years old) in October 1916. So he wasn't even an heir when he "came into the business". I added RVW: it is said that he turned down knighthood but accepted the Order of Merit. Britten also turned down knighthoods repeatedly, but did accept a life peerage. Corrections and additions welcome, of course. In particular, if anyone knows the coat of arms of Elgar, Britten or Menuhin, I'd be delighted. Elgar had no male heirs so the baronetcy became extinct with him. Britten's title was a life peerage, as was Menuhin's. Concerning Period Instruments conductors: Roger Norrington was the first, and currently the only one to be knighted in 1997. Christopher Hogwood (b. 1941) was made CBE in 1989, John Eliot Gardiner (b. 1943) and Roger Norrington (b. 1934) in 1990, and Trevor Pinnock (b. 1946) in 1992. We can expect a slew of historically informed knights within a few years. Other conductors include Andrew Davis (b. 1944) CBE 1992. On the composer side, neither John Tavener, Gavin Bryars, Brian Ferneyhough or Alexander Goehr have yet been made CBE.
