So it was that on Monday evening at 8:30 pm, at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey, pianist Angela Hewitt stepped into the limelight and presented a program for a packed house of works by Bach, Mozart, Messiaen and Liszt. It has often been said that at a piano recital you can tell in the first ten seconds whether the artist's attitude is "I am a concert pianist and I am going to amaze you with my virtuoso technique" or rather "I love these pieces and I want to share them with you." It was the latter attitude that dominated the evening and contributed so much to its success. The opening work was Bach's Concerto in the Italian Style . Bach: Italian Concerto in F major BWV971;Capriccio on the Departure of his Beloved Brother, in B flat major BWV992; Capriccio in E major BWV993; Four Duets; French Overture in B minor BWV831 Hyperion CDA67306 Reviewed by Peter Grahame Woolf Bach's most popular work for solo keyboard scores over fifty entries in the Classical Catalogue and these two, received recently, offer a fascinating evening's listening played in tandem. Johann Sebastian was sparing with performance instructions, so there is ample scope for individual interpretation; both are recommendable. Terence Charlston explains how the Italian musical style pervades Bach's keyboard works, even though distant travel was impossible for him and a thirst for music of other lands had to be satisfied through contact with visiting musicians and by studying scores. Charlston inaugurated the Historical Practice course as Head of Early Music in the Royal Academy of Music, and he knows everything about how to make his chosen instrument expressive, by rhythmic variety and subtle agogic treatment of key moments, even though the harpsichord lacks the piano's sustaining pedal, or the 'swell' of later organs. He is equally an emotional and a scholarly musician, and his playing will convince some collectors who prefer their Bach on the piano.

Angela Hewitt recently paid a visit to the capital to perform. Any avid music fan would drop everything, even visiting his 102-year-old grandma, to go see this lady perform. This was a must-see event. Ms. Hewitt started a ten-year project back in 1994 to record all the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach for Hyperion Records. With the project almost done, it has become one of the best piano recordings of our generation. Besides touring the globe and recoding every Bach keyboard piece that ever existed, Ms. Hewitt is also a part of the Canadian Piano Six. This group of six professional pianists, on top of their regular concerts and tours, travels across Canada performing for rural towns and music lovers. They take ten days a year to stop and make a difference for Joe Music Lover in Smalltown, Canada. There are talented pianists, and then there are really talented pianists. There may not be another pianist in the world right now that has such a stage presence and as much talent as Ms. Hewitt.
