The bridge is her computer and a specialized software program, which allows her to compose her music on an electronic keyboard and then fire off the results via e-mail. Last year her compositions winged their way to St. Petersburg, Russia, where the collection of her original scores, “Napa Valley Serenity,” was recorded on compact disc by the St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra. Rued Langgaard (1893-1952)
In the mid-1920s Langgaard's music went through astonishing changes. Suddenly he decided that the highly original and imaginative works he'd been writing for ten years - like the Third String Quartet - were a wrong turning. Instead he began, with great difficulty, to compose in a style inspired by the Romantic age - and stuck to it for twenty years. Donald Macleod, with Langgaard's biographer Bendt Viinholt Nielsen, explores how Langgaard's strange character, and his complete rejection within Denmark, led him to make this painful U-turn. But it wasn't the end of Langgaard's remarkable story: towards the end of World War Two he took another new - and even more astonishing - direction in his music: 5:00 am I Concerti

    Lowell Liebermann
At age 40, Lowell Liebermann is one of the most internationally performed and sought-after working composers. The popularity of his music is attested to by the multiple recordings his works have received: his Sonata for Flute and Piano has been recorded ten times to date; his Gargoyles for Piano six times; his Flute Concerto is available on 4 different CDs; and recordings are forthcoming of his complete piano music (a 2-CD set on Bridge) and his complete flute chamber music (on Koch.) He was involved in several high-profile activities this season. On October 5, Charles Dutoit and the Tokyo NHK Symphony gave the world premiere of Variations on a Theme of Mozart , commemorating the orchestra’s 75th anniversary; pianist Stephen Hough continues to tour the Liebermann Second Piano Concerto , Op. 36, including with the Montreal Symphony on January 29, 2002, with Dutoit again at the helm. In addition to his long-term association with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Liebermann was composer-in-residence at the Pacific Music Festival for its summer 2001 season. For the first time in the Festival’s history, each of its three resident orchestras (the NHK Symphony, Sapporo, and Pacific Music Festival Orchestras) performed a work by the Festival composer. Liebermann events included an all-Liebermann chamber music evening, with Liebermann joining violinist Chantal Juillet as pianist, and the Flute Concerto with soloist Jeffrey Khaner and the PMF Orchestra at the 5000-seat outdoor stage. At the end of the summer, Ms Juillet gave the world premiere of Liebermann’s
