The Piano Series Tuesday 26 May 1998, 8pm Sydney Town Hall Christian Zacharias Marie-Luise Hinrichs Two pianos - twice the power, half the poetry? Not when half of the duo is Christian Zacharias, a pianist familiar to Sydney's audiences. His first tour here in 1992 was highly acclaimed, with critics praising his intelligent and powerful playing. On this tour of Sydney, he is also to play the five Beethoven Piano Concertos with the SSO. Marie-Luise Hinrichs is less well known, but her credentials are impressive. She is a constant fixture in Europe, and partners Zacharias in duets. The pair have just released a disc of Mozart's music for two pianos on EMI. The piano series is an innovative series this year, programming a concert of duets tonight, and a concert to be played on the fortepiano later on. From tonight's highly enjoyable performance, more of this variety in piano repertoire should be considered for later series. Two piano works/duets have been long neglected by concert programmers, but this pair's accomplished performance should convince them to think otherwise. Tonight's program perfectly showcased the wide range of expression one can elicit from two pianos. Hearing the synergy between the two players, their seamless interaction and their imaginatively compiled program made for the most consistently enjoyable concert of the year. You must go and hear Zacharias play Beethoven.
