A Hungarian Rhapsody
Classical Music Series brings symphony orchestra from Eastern Europe to the Z
By JOANNA McQUILLAN WEEKS, Coastin' editor
The Classical Music Series starts off its season in grand style with a concert by the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Zeiterion Theatre.
(If you're the sort to quibble, a Nov. 10 concert by the Juilliard String Quartet might have been considered the opening salvo, but that was labeled an "optional concert" in the venerable subscription series.)
Founded in 1811, the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra has toured throughout Europe and the United Kingdom. The orchestra will be conducted Saturday by Philippe de Chalendar in a program featuring Beethoven's Symphony No. 8; Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21, K488, in A Major; Bartok's Hungarian Sketches and Schubert's Symphony No. 5, B Flat Major, D. 485.
"It's going to be very exciting to have these people come from Eastern Europe," said Claire Bessette, series president. "They have a marvelous reputation at home and it's an opportunity for people here in New Bedford to hear something different."
Pianist Makiko Hirata will be guest artist for the Mozart concerto. Ms. Hirata began her studies at 3 and emigrated to the United States in 1989, studying with Herbert Stessin and Richard Fabre at the Juilliard School. In addition, she earned her bachelor of music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 1997. While pursuing her master's degree at New York University, she performs regularly with the renowned Jupiter Symphony Orchestra in New York City.

January 17, 2003 Fine Arts Council series a success Tuesday night was the final performance of the Fine Arts Council Performing Arts Series, and what a performance it was! The Hungarian Symphony performed, with a wonderful young Japanese pianist named Makiko Hirata.
I guess I knew they were all visitors to our town, but until I tried to communicate, it just didn’t hit me that these people were in a country where music was the only common language.
Amid lost luggage (one gentleman performing in a maroon sport coat), a broken drumhead, and a dire need for super-glue, this company of musicians was amazed at how quickly these problems were solved.
As the new director, I was very proud to be a small part of this season’s events: Nell Carter, the Broadway musical Swing!, and the Hungarian Symphony. But I was more proud to be a Sumterite, welcoming these strangers into our home, so to speak, and to see the look of friendship and appreciation on their faces as they boarded the bus for their next stop.
On behalf of the board of directors, I’d like to thank everyone who has supported the Fine Arts Council in our 2002-2003 series. And a very special thanks to our many long-time supporters. An organization such as ours cannot exist without memberships and financial contributions. I wish we were the only folks in town that needed your support. We’re not. But we are an organization that improves the quality of life in this town, and quality of life is essential for growth.
