Horowitz was one of this century's most famous pianists, renowned for his tremendous technique. His audiences were often full of pianists trying to glean insight into how he accomplished what he did at the piano. While Horowitz himself composed a few hair-raising pieces to close off his recitals, he regarded himself solely as an artist who used his ability for musical ends. About My Horowitz Page.

Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989)
Performer of the week: Vladimir Horowitz
Airinig on Classica (Germany) on October 6, 1999 Classica showcases the pianist Vladimir Horowitz (1904-1989) in a three-hour-long program. It begins with a portrait showing the artist in private, at work and on the concert stage. "Horowitz in Moscow" documents the legendary concert tour which Vladimir Horowitz undertook in the Soviet Union in 1986; the pianist had not been back in his native Russia for 61 years. On the program of the recital given in the large hall of the Moscow Conservatory were works by Scarlatti, Mozart, Rachmaninov, Skriabin, Schubert, Liszt, Chopin, Schumann and Moszkowski. An excerpt from a concert held at Vienna's Musikvereinssaal in 1987 features two works by Mozart: the Rondo in F major K. 485 and the Sonata in B flat major K. 333. Born in Kiev (Ukraine) in 1904, Vladimir Horowitz was one of the most acclaimed pianists of the 20th century. His phenomenal virtuosity, his willful interpretative style and his delight in publicity turned him into a world-class star who was known far beyond the confines of classical music. He died in New York on November 5, 1989. Portrait of Vladimir Horowitz

Vladimir Horowitz (1904-1989)
The legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz plays Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3
Airing on CLASSICA on June 24, 1997
In 1928 Vladimir Horowitz came to the United States and made his U.S. debut in New York, where he became friends with Sergei Rachmaninov. A few weeks later, the two artists got together to play Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 - with Horowitz as the soloist and Rachmaninov as the "orchestra" at a second piano. Fifty years later, Horowitz performed this work once again in New York, but this time accompanied by the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. Classica presents the live recording of this celebrated event at which Horowitz, who had played the work with its creator and knew it like no other, performed the concerto for the very last time. Sergei Rachmaninov visited the United States for the first time in the fall of 1909. For his lengthy concert tour, he had brought the recently completed Third Piano Concerto with him. The nearly three-quarter-hour long work stands out for its enormous technical demands as well as for its intricate structural design, which links the three movements together cyclically through the use of the same thematic material. The Third Piano Concerto is a standard work in the repertoire of virtuoso concert pianists and shows the composer, who is sometimes unfairly called old-fashioned, as fully in tune with his time.

    Signature of Greatness
World's Great Pianists Attest Brilliance of Volodyia, Shepherd School's Concert Grand Piano
    BY DAVID KAPLAN
    Rice News Staff
March 19, 1998 When you hear Dean Shank talk about Volodyia's colorful personality and brilliance, you might think he's referring to a beloved member of his own family. Volodyia is, in fact, a renowned Steinway concert grand piano which Shank, an artist teacher of piano, piano pedogogy and piano technology, considers to be an extraordinary musical instrument.

Some of the world's greatest pianists would agree. When master pianists are taken with a piano after playing it, they may sign their name on its cast iron plate. Among the legends whose autographs appear on Volodyia are Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubin-stein and Van Cliburn. "Volodyia" is a Russian nickname for Vladimir, as in Horowitz. Shank finds it fitting that the piano would be named after the master pianist because it reminds him of Horowitz's sonority, in that it's "very brilliant and powerful with a very large dynamic range." Shank admires the piano's remarkable combination of tonal qualitiesan enormous dynamic range and a tone that lasts a very long time. "It can be very beautiful and softly lyrical while playing slow movements of romantic piano sonatas and Chopin nocturnes, and then it can turn around and play a concerto and absolutely soar above the biggest symphony orchestra," says Shank. "I've never seen another Steinway concert grand that could be so successful in such a wide variety of musical styles and acoustical environments."

    Cons
None. The Bottom Line Warning! Not for the feint of heart (or any other organ for that matter, as this music attacks ALL the senses). Full Review Franz Liszt is a towering figure from the Romantic era of the 19th Century. Vladimir Horowitz was undoubtedly the greatest concert pianist of the 20th Century. This CD marries the talents of two icons of classical music onto one powerful musical package. Tracks: 1. Sonata in B Minor 2. Ballade No. 2 in B Minor 3. Consolation No. 3 4. Funerailles 5. Mephisto Waltz No. 1 Breakdown: Franz Liszt (1811-1886) embodied the very spirit of the Romantic age. A child prodigy, who went on to world fame for his talents, Liszt could be regarded as the first bona-fide “rock star”. The longhaired virtuoso was well known for his dazzling, let-it-all-hang-out performances. In an age where there was the increasing tendency to place the composer on a pedestal, Liszt was the larger-than-life benchmark. His adulation by the public gained for him a certain notoriety when it came to the opposite gender. Yes, it seems that Liszt may have invented the “groupie.” In fact, so powerful was his allure, that it is said that a young, adoring maiden once threatened a 70-year-old Liszt with committing suicide if he did not make love to her!
