Debbaut Orchestrates Noteworthy
Revival of U. Music Program
This article orginally appeared in The Salt Lake Tribune , (November 20, 1994) Robert Debbaut is going from the hill to the hall Monday night. And he is bringing more than 60 top-flight student musicians and a world-class guest soloist with him. Debbaut, director of the two University of Utah symphony orchestras, will conduct his premier ensemble, the Utah Philharmonia, in a 7:30 concert at Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple. The highlight will be a performance of the original Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2, with British pianist Leslie Howard as soloist. The orchestra also will play Rimsky Korsakov's "Scheherazade" symphonic suite. It is the first time a Utah audience will hear the 45 minute Tchaikovsky Second in its entirety, Debbaut said. In a letter to his brother, the composer "disavowed" an abbreviated version and called it "a mutilation" of the original score, the conductor added. To Note Birthday : And in "Scheherazade," the orchestra will celebrate the 150th birthday of the Russian composer. "When we go downtown, we show the public where their tax dollars are going and the quality they're getting out of their investment in this university," said Debbaut, who took over the U.'s orchestral program in the fall of 1990. And Debbaut likewise lures stellar soloistslike Howard for the Abravanel Hall concerts.

3 Compact Discs CDA67403/4 This set and its companion ( ) are perhaps the most important releases in Leslie Howard's complete survey of Liszt's piano music. In addition to such well known works as the mature Piano Concertos (two of the most popular works in the nineteenth-century Romantic repertoire) and the other lesser known but familiar pieces, several items here receive their first recordings; as a result of Leslie Howard's indefatigable research we can now hear orchestral versions of Hexaméron and the Grand Solo de concert for the first time. Also in new versions are the recently discovered Concerto in E flat, Op posth, and De Profundis. A re-examination of the manuscripts has led our pianist to make refinements to the published scores which provide a more accurate reflection of Liszt's intentions. All these issues and more are documented in Leslie Howard's characteristically thorough notes. Recorded in the Budapest Studios of Hungarian Radio on 6-11 November 1997 and 24 June - 1 July 1998

TITANIC OPERATIC LIZST An interesting unpublished version of Meyerbeer's 'Les Huguenots' is even more enticing and contains a better arrangement than the previous versions, something which is espoused in Howard's scholarly notes. Another 'extra' version of Bellini's 'La Sonnambula' appears here and one can only marvel at the height of Lizst's inspiration and capability in making such music sound so utterly pianistic. There is also Russian charm and a sense of joie de vivre in the 'Russlan' transcription. The 'Valse et Caprice' contains elements of Lizst's better style, all fused into such a charming whole that I was almost singing the tunes after a few repeated listens. Howard's marvelous playing adds to the excitement and virility of the piece. This brings us to the inimitable arrangement of Wagner's 'Tannhauser' Overture. It is quite amazing to realize how such a vividly orchestral work can sound so incredibly beautiful in a pianistic guise. Howard's slow tempo adds to to the grandeur and nobility of the piece, thus creating an unforgettable sensation in the middle of the Pilgrim's Chorus theme and the headlong rush into the final chords. After such fireworks, the somewhat overlong and occasionally boorish melodies of 'I Puritani' may seem to sound cheap by comparison but repeated listening will make one appreciate this titanic music much more. At times it seems that these arrangements rather grow on you!

On the particular piece 'Improvisations on la Folia' is said at the same page: We have no surviving 16th-century choreography for the Folia melody, which was widely known and popular for almost three centuries. Dancers may improvise, as musicians love to do, to the haunting little strain or simply to its bass. You do not have to be a musicologist or a great analyser of 16th Century dances to recognize instantly in 'improvisations on la Folia' the later Folia-theme which was introduced (ok, i make an exception for Falconieri ) by Lully in 1672. The subtitle 'flowers of the 16th Century Italian Dance Music' is absolutely incorrect. I wonder what kind of dance is picked for this Baroque music pur sang and clearly intended for a listening audience the delicate way it is played. However the Folia theme (a nice blending of the Gallot and Ruiz de Ribayaz ) sounds great on the Chitaronne.

    INTERMEZZO (1939)

During the period in which he was producing and releasing his signature movie, Gone With the Wind (1939), David O. Selznick made another important contribution to American films by introducing Ingrid Bergman in her first English-speaking movie, Intermezzo (1939). Selznick assistant Kay Brown had seen an earlier Swedish version of the film, also starring Bergman, and the producer dispatched her to Stockholm to secure the rights for an American remake. After Brown returned to New York with the screenplay rights, Selznick had an afterthought and sent her once again to Sweden, this time with instructions to sign the leading lady to a contract.
According to Selznick biographer Bob Thomas, Bergman had turned down other Hollywood offers from fast-talking Hollywood types but was impressed by Brown's personality, telling her, "You're so sweet and human that anyone you work for couldn't be nearly as crazy as I expected." She eventually signed with Selznick, although stipulating that she would commit to only one film before deciding whether she wanted to stay in Hollywood.
Bergman balked at Selznick's plans for a "glamour makeover" that involved capping her teeth, plucking her eyebrows and dying her hair. "You must have liked me to bring me all the way over here," she told him, adding that she had not had plucked eyebrows or dyed hair in the original
