This contrapuntal technique is the direct result of the notational system in use at that time, called mensural notation, which was far less backward than one might think. She studied composition with Ruth Schonthal at the Westchester Conservatory of Music, where she received the William Petchek Scholarship. For two summers she was a scholarship student at the Tanglewood Institute. She was graduated summa cum laude from the music department of Harvard University, where her teachers included Earl Kim, Leon Kirchner and Peter Lieberson. Lann won the New York Music Teachers Association 'Herbert Zipper Prize,' the New York Musicians Club 'Bohemians Prize' and the Harvard University 'Hugh F. MacColl Prize.' She directed the Harvard Group For New Music, produced radio feature programs and was music director for productions at the American Repertory Theater. In 1990 Vanessa Lann was awarded the Harvard University 'John Knowles Paine Traveling Fellowship,' which brought her to The Netherlands. She received her Masters Degree with highest honors in 1993 from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where her teachers included Theo Loevendie, Gilius van Bergeijk and Louis Andriessen.

Wat ooit begonnen is als een passie voor klassieke muziek, heeft in Juli 1999 geleid tot de vestiging van een bijzondere cd winkel in een sfeervol, vroeg 17de-eeuws pand. Eigenaar Bruno Truyens, zelf afkomstig uit een muzikaal nest, vervulde na een loopbaan bij een klassieke- platenmaatschappij, een lang gekoesterde wens met de opening van zijn cd-speciaalzaak Bruno Klassiek. Inmiddels is Bruno Klassiek in korte tijd uitgegroeid tot een begrip. Het vroegere woonhuis van Vincent van der Vinne, leerling van Frans Hals, herbergt de grootste en meest uitgelezen cd-collectie klassieke muziek van de regio. Er heerst een ontspannen sfeer en u kunt rekenen op deskundig advies van Bruno en zijn medewerkster Ans Duivenvoorden (zie foto). Naast het standaardrepertoire treft u veel bijzondere uitgaven aan, maar ook een afdeling antiquariaat. In het afgelopen jaar organiseerde Bruno Klassiek enkele optredens van bekende artiesten, zoals het Aurelia Saxofoon Kwartet, de Roemeense operadiva Nelly Miricioiu, Eduardo López Banzo (dirigent van het Spaanse barokensemble Al Ayre Español), pianist Ivo Janssen, het Storioni Trio Amsterdam, cellist Pieter Wispelwey samen met pianist Paolo Giacometti en de gerenommeerde Bulgaars/Nederlandse pianiste Marietta Petkova. In Maart 2002 verzorgde de 18-jarige Yundi Li, de jongste winnaar ooit van het prestigieuze Chopin Concours Warschau, een Chopin programma bij Bruno Klassiek.
