Artist Bio: The celebrated pianist Keith Jarrett first established his reputation in the popular Charles Lloyd group (Dream Weaver) where he proved himself to be a dazzlingly gifted player. A period with Miles Davis in the early '70s (Live Evil and At Fillmore) did not lead- as with pianists Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul and Herbie Hancock- to the subsequent formation of a jazz-rock outfit. Jarrett's career has been remarkably diverse.
Born Allentown, Pennsylvania, on May 8, 1945, Jarrett learned piano from age 3, exploring improvisation and composition as early as 7. At 15, he took formal lessons and by 16 was presenting program of his own work even touring with Freddie Waring's Pennsylvanians. In '63 he spent an eventful year on a scholarship to Berklee School of Music and built his early reputation on having being kicked out of Berklee.
After working around in Boston, in '65 Jarrett moved to New York becoming an Art Blakey Jazz Messenger (for three months) and working with Roland Kirk. In February '66, Charles Lloyd found Jarrett playing as a cocktail-bar pianist and, over the next three years Jarrett toured Europe six times with Lloyd, covering eighteen countries including a trip to Moscow (Charles Lloyd in the Soviet Union).

Inside Out
(ECM) Reviewer: Russell Gragg, CFBU 103.7FM, St. Catharines
Reviewed: Jan. 2002 With the possible exception of John Coltranes incendiary take on Rodgers and Hammersteins "My Favorite Things", the concept of free-jazz interpretations of standards is a rare commodity, but one that seems to be picking up steam in recent years. Veterans of the downtown New York scene like tenor saxophonist David S. Ware and pianist Matthew Shipp have weighed in with explorations of classics Ware takes on the schmaltzy "The Way We Were" on 1998s Go See The World , while Shipp has tried out variations on "Greensleeves", "Take The A-Train", and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" with decidedly mixed results.
As it stands, though, no other group embodies that link from past to future better than the long-standing trio of pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Each of the three cut their chops in the burgeoning free jazz scene of the late sixties, but have spent the last several years taking apart and reconstructing the massive body of work that preceded them.

By Karl Ritter
ASSOCIATED PRESS STOCKHOLM, Sweden
American pianist Keith Jarrett was named the winner Tuesday of the $117,000 Polar Music Prize for his ability "to effortlessly cross boundaries in the world of music." The award was founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, manager of Swedish pop group ABBA, through a donation to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Jarrett was the first musician to win the award solo. It has been split between pop artists and classical musicians. The academy cited Jarrett's fusion of musical genres, from jazz and pop to gospel and classical music, as well as his improvisational skills. "Through a series of brilliant solo performances and recordings that demonstrate his utterly spontaneous creativity, Keith Jarrett has simultaneously lifted piano improvisation as an art form to new, unimaginable heights," award committee chairman Aake Holmquist said at a news conference in Stockholm. Jarrett wasn't at the news conference, but is expected to travel to Sweden to collect the award May 12 from King Carl XVI Gustaf, Holmquist said.

Pianist Keith Jarrett goes it alone on The Melody at Night, With You . No stranger to solo recitals, here Jarrett tackles familiar standards along with a few “traditional” pieces and as we come to expect, the performances are near flawless. Part of the beauty and majesty of it all lies within Jarrett’s penchant for understatement and ebullience while possessing an astounding sense of depth and range. Throughout this recording, Jarrett has seemingly decided to forego any semblance of dramatics as he vividly sets the scenario for the listener along with the partner of his or her choice as they may sit in front of a soft burning fire under dim lights. Terry Gibbs Welcome to AAJ! New to Jazz? Building a Jazz Library History of Jazz ... Jazz Humor Concert Posters Inside Out
This 2001 release marks a departure from the Trio’s standards-based format and in pianist, Keith Jarrett’s words: “I mentioned to Jack (DeJohnette) and Gary (Peacock), during a tour in Europe, that perhaps we would scrap the format – the whole idea of having to use any material.” Recorded during two evenings at London’s “Royal Festival Hall,” this oft-celebrated band swerves a bit left of center during these truly exhilarating performances, as the artists reinvestigate previously applied methodologies. Sure, these musicians are no strangers to the ways or implementations of improvisation. However, the band frequently improvises within a structured approach, largely due to the choice of predefined material, yet here, this outfit excels and perhaps provide a clinic on the art of pursuing meaningful and altogether impressionable three-way dialogue. Needless to state, its been over two decades since Jarrett, Paul Motian (drums), Charlie Haden (bass) and Dewey Redman (sax) rendered programs consisting of open-ended interplay, and Ornette Coleman- style harmolodics amid a deeply personalized mode of attack. Whereas, Jack DeJohnette’s 70’s and 80’s group led albums for “ECM Records” and a recent recording starring trumpeter, Wadada Leo Smith bespeaks free or avant-garde inclinations. Otherwise, bassist, Gary Peacock’s recent outings with pianists, Marilyn Crispell and Paul Bley find the artist engaging in buoyant rhythmic parameters and quietly expansive frameworks.
