  • Brazilian City Confers Honorary Citizenship on SGI President
Conferral at Contagem City assembly On October 16, Contagem City, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, conferred an honorary citizenship on SGI President Daisaku Ikeda. Contagem Mayor Ademir Lucas Gomes, Assembly President Maria Lucia Guedes Vieira and Assemblyman Arnaldo Luiz de Oliveira were present for the ceremony. During a reading of the citation, Assembly President Oliveira commented that the assembly's decision to confer the honorary citizenship was unanimous, attesting to the relevance of Mr. Ikeda's pacifist ideals in modern society. Ms. Oliveira said Mr. Ikeda is shaping the future of the world by fostering capable youth who will contribute to humanity's future. [The conferral was conducted three days before the anniversary of Mr. Ikeda's first visit to Brazil on October 16, 1960. At that time, Mr. Ikeda, scheduled to fly to Brazil from New York, was seized with a bout of illness. Although people around him tried to dissuade him from making the trip until he recovered, he refused to concede and went on to visit Brazil as planned, citing that his mentor Mr. Toda had never succumbed to obstacles. Mr. Ikeda writes about this incident in his novel, The New Human Revolution.

OPERA By Vilma Liacouras Chantiles Music lovers curious about the origins of opera must turn to Italy and the people's love of music.
"Everyone sings in Italy," an Italian-born artisan told me when he was laying tiles in our home. "When we went to the field to harvest corn for polenta, we all sang together." Did they sing opera? He shook his head, "We sang our songs, our village songs."
His words recall Verdi's when his workers worked in his farm, Santa Agata. They would be singing and some neighbors complained. But Verdi defended the workers, maintaining people have a right to sing. Verdi was right. Can you imagine a communion with God and nature more intimate than singing outdoors, working with your family? And when Verdi died in 1901 and requested that no music be included in his modest funeral, what happened? The throngs of people who gathered in the procession spontaneously began singing the beloved melody, "

COSMOS TOUR - VANCOUVER AND ROCKIES INSIDE PASSAGE CRUISE TO ALASKA 28TH MAY - 16TH JUNE 2001 1st Day - Journey to Vancouver, British Columbia Manchester - London - Chicago - Vancouver. From leaving our house in Preston, Lancashire, England, to arriving at the hotel in Vancouver it took just under 24 hours. If it is possible to get a direct flight then that would be so much better, or at least only one change. We were only supposed to change at Chicago but unfortunately a couple of weeks before we travelled we received a letter informing us that we had to change at London as well. We were transferred by stretch limo to the hotel and felt like celebrities. Quality Inn, Vancouver - Situate in Downtown about twenty minutes walk from the harbour. Nice room with two double beds, hair dryer, iron/board, tea/coffee making facilities. You could purchase a buffet breakfast for $10 or a la carte. We had a nice continental breakfast for $6.95. (Fruit juice, choice of two of six items, i.e. croissant, toast, danish pastry, muffin etc., fresh fruit salad and tea or coffee). Outdoor heated pool. Vancouver - is a very large cosmopolitan city made more attractive by the expanse of water around it. It is Canada's third largest city, after Toronto and Montreal. It enjoys a mild climate year-round. Attractions are numerous - wander round Gastown and Chinatown, take a ride up the Harbour Tower, see a film at the Imax Theatre, have a ramble round Stanley Park etc.

Miller Theatre Dodge Hall Campus Programs seeks to enhance the quality of life for students and has a strong commitment to diversity and promoting a sense of community among students, faculty and staff. This includes student advocacy, leadership development, community service volunteerism, advisement to student organizations, support for person with disabilities and special programs and events. In 1991, the President's and Provost's Student Initiative Fund was set up to simplify the process by which student groups request funding for special events. The Fund promotes activities that involve the entire campus, assists intra-group understanding through events cosponsored by many student groups, and offers support to unique or first-time events and projects that create educational opportunities for community service. Applications for funding are submitted to Campus Programs and are evaluated by representatives of key student groups, who make the final decisions. Separate portions of the Fund are allocated for graduate and undergraduate events by graduate and undergraduate student groups, respectively.

NEW YORK CITY
Perhaps F. Scott Fitzgerald's book The Great Gatsby doesn't really want to be translated for the stage or screen. It's a very literary novel a rumination on its era, the Roaring Twenties, and their overlay of harsh, energetic activity on a mushy underbed of bogus nostalgia. Perhaps Gatsby could have been a great musical, a sort of non-parodistic The Boyfriend , but the thoughtful reflections would have had to be left out. Making it into an opera, John Harbison chose (or inevitably ended up with) a mixed-genre approach. His version, which had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera on December 20, combines elements of the Broadway musical with what in Germany is called "literature opera," a background score to an important piece of writing. The result shares some of the strengths of Broadway with some of the weaknesses of Eurotrash intellectualism. By the same token, however, it avoids Broadway's pat commercial turns, and Harbison has written music more substantial and interesting than that of most literature operas. The Great Gatsby was commissioned for the Met to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the debut of artistic director James Levine, who conducted its potpourri of styles with unerring resource and instinct. Pastel shadings in the orchestra were built and sustained with the same poise and panache that gave the right lilt and tone to the score's popular songs. For the latter, Harbison worked with lyricist Murray Horwitz, a man of protean talents, who captured the spirit of the Jazz Age just as surely as did the composer. There's talk of offering the songs as a suite, adding more that Horwitz wrote on instrumental tunes from the opera.

We stopped briefly in Anniston for breakfast at McDonald's and arrived in Atlanta in time for lunch at a Chinese restaurant on Buford highway. We browsed shops for a little while before we headed for Days Inn near the airport. By the time we checked in at the motel at 4:30 pm, the rain had stopped and sky cleared. We had a light dinner and turned in early. "Tomorrow is going to be a great day, and we'll begin it early," I assured myself as I closed my eyes. Days 1 and 2 (5-23-01 Wed, 5-24-01 Thu) Atlanta -Shanghai Soon after takeoff we were served refreshment and dinner at 4 pm (SF time). The menu, which was in Chinese and English, included bay shrimp with glass noodle salad, vegetable salad with Asian-style dressing, roasted chicken with cashew sauce, steamed rice, sugar snap peas and carrots, and for dessert Eli's Dulce de Leche cheesecake. The food was as delicious as these names suggested. Around midnight we were served a snack and prior to arrival at Shanghai we had another meal. In the meantime, we were shown three movies. The first and most interesting was "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon." It was just like the stories we heard when we were little-man walking on the water, flying through the air, jumping from treetops to treetops, hopping from one rooftop to another, contracting the distance, and so on.

Deborah Voigt…has proved herself in recent seasons to be among the best Wagnerian sopranos, and on Saturday evening she was at her finest. Her gorgeous account of the Wesendonk Lieder gave the modest texts an unusual glow, and the sheer power, tonal richness and clarity of phrasing she brought to the "Liebestod" made it impossible not to be swept into Isolde’s emotional world. New York Times, July 17, 1997 For if you were fortunate enough to be at the Met last Monday night, your time will come. "Did you hear Placido Domingo, Deborah Voigt, Matti Salminen and James Levine in the first act of ‘Die Walküre’ on April 28, 1997?" you may murmur 10 years hence. Your interlocutors will have no answer, for from performances like that one, legends are made. New York Times, May 5, 1997 Cassandre/ Les Troyens (Dutoit) Montreal Symphony - "[Deborah Voigt] is an ideal Cassandre, tonally bright and beautiful, fluent in lyric or declamatory passages, bold and unflinching in attack.
