"It's an art form that can give us a painless way of understanding ourselves." In the hands of this acclaimed filmmaker, JAZZ , is a journey across an American landscape divided by war, segregated by race, united through swing and dance, and ultimately redeemed through this most American of art forms. "Jazz," the drummer Art Blakey liked to say, "washes away the dust of everyday life." With 75 interviews, more than 500 pieces of music, 2,400 stills and over 2,000 archival film clips - many rare and never before seen - the series follows the growth and development of jazz from the gritty streets of New Orleans to the Lincoln Gardens on Chicago's Southside where Louis Armstrong first won fame, from Prohibition-era speakeasies to the wide-open clubs of Kansas City. The Steinway Piano Gallery of Naples helped bring the program to Southwest Florida. The program originally aired in January and is being rebroadcast in February.

WHITTIER CAMPUS GETS A SPRUCE-UP THIS SUMMER Welcome back to the new and improved Whittier College. Several projects involving improvements to the physical plant - some completed and others still under way - are creating an improved environment for teaching, learning, and, believe it or not, playing. Jo Ann Hankin, vice president for finance and administration, said that more than 15 projects - from tree planting to air conditioning residence halls - were completed this summer, under the direction of Nelson Park, director of projects, and Dan Peterson, manager of campus facilities. "With the George Allen Fitness Center scheduled for its official opening on September 20," she added, "we will now turn our focus to completing KWTR, the campus radio station, which will be located in the Dexter Student Center." Room 102 in the Science Building has been revamped and rewired for computers, Lautrup auditorium in Hoover Hall has gotten a face lift, and playgrounds at the Broadoaks ChildrenÕs School have been upgraded, according to Park.

Cliburn Piano Competition
A young German pianist is conquering America. Jan Gottlieb Jiracek was the only German among 35 candidates in this year's Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which ended last Sunday (June 8th) in Fort Worth, Texas. The competition, founded 35 years ago, it is now held every four years. It was named after the American pianist Van Cliburn who in 1958 won a gold medal at the first Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow. America immediately embraced the 6 ft. 4 inch youngster with the curly blond hair who succeeded in Russia at the height of the Cold War. Jan Jiracek is also a 6 ft. 4 inches tall with blond hair, and the audience at the Van Cliburn Competition favored him from the beginning. They rooted for him throughout the competition, since Jiracek was among the top six candidates who made it into the final round. At the end, he "only" won a shared fourth prize, but the competition has opened new doors for him, as Georg Hirsch reports.

Cliburn Klavierwettbwerb

Stanislaw Ioudenitch woke up a dozing late-night audience members at his Milan audition in January with a purposely dry, diamond-cut rendition of Liszt's Spanish Rhapsody that showed off fleet fingers and powerful momentum. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, of Russian descent, he moved to Madrid in 1991 to study with Dmitri Bahkirov, and has since settled for the time being in Italy, where, with a scholarship from the International Piano Foundation, he has studied with Murray Perahia, Ros alyn Tureck and other renowned teachers at Como. A demonstrative pianist who closed his Milan audition with an appropriately manic performance of Stravinsky's Petrouchka, Ioudenitch says he plans to "practice like crazy" for the Cliburn Competition. He also feels that he needs to increase his live performance experience, and hopes to line up some additional recital engagements in Italy before the competition in May.

Burn dashes pianist's Cliburn hopes

A simple cup of tea. Cliburn semifinalist Stanislav Ioudenitch, 25, of Russia, got up at 6 a.m. yesterday to practice and to make himself a steaming hot cup of tea.
For most competitors, the Cliburn's glamorous whirl of parties is far removed from the frugality of their daily lives

Yuan Sheng has lived for the past four years in a sixth-floor walk-up on the edge of Harlem, overrun by mice and cockroaches in the deafening wake of a New York City mass transit line.
First person: There's something special about the chamber music

The string players have arrived! Ah, the joy of violins two of them. And a viola. And a cello. A whole wonderful Tokyo String Quartet of musicians who came with their own instruments and won't be fiddling with any benches before they play.
Notes from the 10th Cliburn

Clap on
: the audience called German Jan Gottlieb Jiracek for three bows after his performance with the Tokyo String Quartet, and then kept clapping harder and louder until their applause rang out in unison.
