This excellent article, which was first published in respected Avant Magazine, gives the reader a comprehensive look into four decades of Norwegian jazz and contemporary music. Four of the most beautiful of all Norwegian jazz records were released in the latter half of the 1970s: the 1975 Soturnudi by the Guttorm Guttormsen Quartet, with Guttormsen (saxes), Brynjulf Blix (piano), Carl Morten Iversen (bass) and Espen Rud (drums); the 1978 Til Jorden (To the Earth), which featured poet Rolf Jacobsen reading his work to music composed by pianist Egil Kapstad, with bassist Bjørn Alterhaug and saxophonist Bjørn Johansen together with Karin Krog in the accompanying ensemble; Moments, also of 1978, which found various musicians, including ex-Jan Garbarek Group pianist Terje Bjørklund and saxophonist John Pål Inderberg in a largish ensemble (including another excellent pianist Per Husby) interpreting eleven lyrically-charged compositions by bassist Alterhaug, and the 1979 Albufeira, with alto and soprano saxophonist Guttorm Guttormsen leading a quartet with bassist Iversen again present, but with Rune Klakegg now on piano and Jørgen Næss on drums.

Jan Kaspersen (Biography - short version) Pianist, composer, and bandleader Born on 22 April 1948 in Copenhagen. Studied piano with Juke Jordan and Herman D. Koppel, and jazz theory with George Russell. Study trips to The Gambia, West Africa, in 1983 and 1985. Since 1969 active on the jazz scene, primarily in Denmark, but has performed in Greenland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, Italy, the USA, and Russia. Awarded DJBFA's composer prize in 1987, the JASA prize in 1988, Statens Kunstfonds 3-year work grant in 1993, and lifelong grant from 1998. Leader of his own ensembles since 1979 and active as solo pianist. Established his name during the 1980s as one of the most distinctive and original profiles in jazz - as pianist, composer, and not least as bandleader. He has made numerous recordings with his own groups - large and small - with duos and as solo pianist. Rockwell/Kaspersen's "Ballads and Cocktails" was chosen jazz recording of the year in 1992 and Jan Kaspersen Quintet's "Heavy Smoke" received a Grammy for best jazz recording of the year in 1994. Featured         A r t i s t       Leif Ove         A n d s n e s Leif Ove Andsnes, born in 1970 on Karmøy in western Norway, enjoys the position as one of the greatest musicians of his generation in his native country. He entered the Bergen Music Conservatory in 1986, where he studied under Jiri Hlinka, and has through the past decade gradually fortified his position among the firsts of pianists. Andsnes has since his debut, appeared with several of the worlds principal orchestras, such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Boston Symphony, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philharmonia, and the Oslo Philarmonic Orchestra. He also enjoys a reputation as an outstanding recitalist, and has appeared at the most prestigious musical centras in London, Vienna, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York, etc. Leif Ove Andsnes has recieved numerous awards, including the Hindemith prize (Frankfurt 87), the Grieg prize (Bergen 90) and a Dorothy B. Chandler Performing Arts Award in 1992. In 1997 he was awarded the Gilmore prize (USA).
