THE SHOREVIEW NORTHERN LIGHTS VARIETY BAND PRESENTS
"ONE MAGICAL EVENING"
Popular holiday event returns to Benson Great Hall December 14th The Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band is ready to present its annual holiday concert, called "One Magical Evening" on Saturday, December 14th. Along with several guest performers, they will take the stage at Benson Great Hall on the campus of Bethel College & Seminary at 7:30 p.m.
The 94-member group has been preparing for this concert since closing their summer season this past July. "This event has really become a tradition for performers and audience alike", says Concert Committee Chairman Steve Piper. "It’s the biggest single event we do each year."
Last year’s event, entitled "Home for the Holidays", produced the third sold-out holiday concert in a row. After considering adding a second performance, the Band decided to stay with a single show for the time being. "There was a great deal of encouragement for us to add another show", Piper says, “but in the end, we felt it was best to give it everything we have without having to worry about saving energy for another show. That’s why we called it One Magical Evening."
Many popular features will return this year. Free horse-drawn carriage rides will again bring concert-goers from the parking lots between 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. The Shoreview Historical Society and Ramsey Center for the Arts have also been invited to display their work in the lobby outside the concert hall. Light refreshments will also be available in the lobby both before the show and during intermission.

This is more standard type pieces than his old showtune stuff, and he again shows off his range, but also his soloing ability more so than in his older albums. The Big Bop Nouveau group again shows why they're part of the elite. Staggering Solos and duets pepper this album. • 29. Goldbergs By Joseph Payne
volume 1 proclaims The orbiting harpsichord of joseph Payne illuminates that the harpsichordist was really a pianist, as I bradley Lehman wrote (June 4, 2001
    http://www.bach-cantatas.com/NonVocal/Klavier-Goldberg-Payne.htm
Goldberg Variations BWV 988 Joseph Payne (Harpsichord) Goldbergs by Joseph Payne Goldberg Variations Goldberg Variations BWV 988 Joseph Payne (Harpsichord) BIS CD / TT: ? Kirk McElhearn wrote (June 3, 2001): I just listened yesterday to Joseph Payne's Goldbergs on BIS. I was a bit surprised at first by what I was hearing, then, as the recording went on, I began to appreciate it, and even like it. Here's the rub.
Payne has decided to fully appropriate the score. While in the first playing of each variation he follows the score to the letter, the repeats feature a truly personal ornamentation, augmentation and even improvisation. At first, this stunned me - even in the repeat of the first part of the aria, he goes out on a limb. I recalled how Andras Schiff's recording rubbed me the wrong way because of his transgressions.
But, then, as the disc went on, I started to understand what Payne was doing. He was adding much more than a mere interpretation to the work, and was doing what, undoubtedly, Bach or other performers would have done at the time.
Don, Brad, do either of you have this recording? Any comments?
