SCOTT BRADLEY
Scott Bradley (-)
In 1934, MGM decided that they had to get into the growing cartoon business but they weren't brave enough to create their own unit. Instead, they bought in cartoons from the Hugh Harman/Rudolf Ising company (the name of the company, Harman-Ising, was a deliberate pun). Scott Bradley worked for Harman-Ising, having previously been at Disney, alongside Carl Stalling who later went to Warner Brothers and worked on 600 of the famous Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. So, when MGM decided to create their own in-house cartoon unit in 1938, it was natural that they bought in most of the people from the Harman-Ising stable and Bradley became a full time MGM employee. Cartoon music was, in the mid 1930s, still pretty much a collection of popular songs linked together with the occasional musical effect supporting the action. It wasn't until the late '30s that the music started to tell the story more than the sound effects did. Roy Prendergast in his book Film Music, a neglected art (1992) tells the story of how Bradley was dissatisfied with a simple collage of popular tunes. He approached Fred Quimby and asked if he could develop a new style of musical writing that closely mimicked what was going on on the screen. Quimby agreed to this and also said that he was prepared for Bradley to compose some music before the animation was done, instead of being done afterwards, as was normally the case.

About My Research: I am a music consultant working as the Director of the Music Archive program of The Estate Project for Artists with AIDS. This project is dedicated to preserving and promoting the music of composers who have died from AIDS and who are living with HIV/AIDS. Currently we are gathering information on the effects of AIDS on American Music.
I am appealing to the general public and to members of the music community in particular for assistance in my research which is focused on three areas:
I - COMPOSERS WITH AIDS
Consult the list of composers that we have identified to date (below) and let me know of other composers that should be added. We are interested in all composers who have died without regard to the type of music they wrote or their level of prominence. For convenience, we have divided the names into two general fields Composers and Singer Songwriters.
We are also especially interested in making contact with composers living with HIV/AIDS so that we may assist them as needed. We will approach any referrals with discretion and confidentiality.
For each composer on our list, we want to secure, at a minimum, the following information:

    d'Note 1016 (Allegro) 74 minutes
This is the first new Louisville Orchestra release in some years-and appears on a fast-growing new independent label, too-and its generous survey of four concertante works by Joan Tower proves to be a revelation for this listener.
On the basis of her well-exposed orchestral works such as Sequoia and Silver Ladders (both products of the early 80s, she had seemed to be primarily a concocter of a species of lushly scored, hedonistically picturesque, but somewhat emotionally shallow soundscapes couched in a generically post-stravinskian, quasi-minimalist style. But these four highly concentrated one-movement concertos-written over a six-year span from 1985 and 1991-show Tower to have moved naturally into a much more structurally rigorous and texturally lean dimension-"lean and mean" might be a more apt description , as these are far from complacent works: they are tensile, pithy, full of vim and vinegar.
