Declicked but otherwise unfiltered the deep groove whiskery burble soon sinks out of conscious hearing. The best filtering if we are not to lose something of ambience or tone is the filter the mind brings to bear. In the case of this disc the light crackle is in any event discreet - barely discernible. The Brahms pairing surprises with the presence of the fabled American pianist Kapell killed at the age of 31 in a plane crash and with the lieder pianist Gerald Moore (he also recorded the Rubbra Second Sonata with Sammons). In both sonatas Primrose is warmth and vigour personified. There is no blurring of phrasing and while this accent on punctuation and 'breathing' can, in other hands, seem over-emphatic or stilted, Primrose's approach and tone remains clear, humorous and virile. I cannot imagine Brahmsians being disappointed. In fact he strikes me as a sort of counterpart of Isaac Stern in his Sony recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto.

IPAM's collections comprise one of the world's most extensive concentrations of piano recordings, books, scores, programs, and related materials, including the archival papers of many great keyboard artists. The International Piano Archives was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1965 by Albert Petrak and Gregor Benko, who soon moved the organization to New York City where they added William Santaella to the staff. In New York, the Archives quickly grew into an audio treasure and earned acclaim for its reissues of historic piano performances. In 1977 the International Piano Archives was given to the University of Maryland, College Park, where it serves students and faculty as well as an international community of musicians, researchers, and friends of piano performance. From 1980 to 1994, under the leadership of Neil Ratliff, IPAM's collections increased and diversified, and the reissues of historic piano performances continued. Mr. Ratliff also initiated the publication of books and a newsletter as well as a program of public events and exhibitions. IPAM's first Curator, Morgan Cundiff, was succeeded in 1993 by Donald Manildi.

Critics praise his virtuosity, his cerebral interpretations tempered by an aching tenderness, his unconventional programming and his advocacy of late-20th-century music. David E. Kapell founded Kapell Real Estate, Inc. in 1981 after moving to Greenport, from New York City with his wife and business partner, Eileen Kapell. Mr. Kapell grew up in New York City, where his early career was devoted to managing several highly successful Manhattan restaurants, including J.P's, Café Figaro, and Marvin Gardens. Since moving to Greenport, Mr. Kapell has held a number of public service positions. In 1979 he was appointed Community Development Supervisor for the Village of Greenport, and during his two-year tenure was responsible for the funding and administration of a multi-million-dollar urban renewal program. Christopher Taylor, Pianist Pianist Christopher Taylor has big shoes to fill on the UW School of Music faculty. He has just stepped into the vacancy created by the retirement of Howard Karp, the magnificent pianist who has been a local institution since 1972. On Sunday, Oct. 22, Taylor will show Madison what he has to offer in his first local concert appearance (4 p.m. at Mills Hall in the UW Humanities Building), playing a very interesting recital of music by Beethoven, Brahms and Messiaen. To judge by the one recording of Taylor's playing I've heard, William Bolcom's Twelve New Etudes , he should have little problem with the notes, for most of the Bolcom pieces are fearsomely demanding. A native of Boulder, Colorado, Taylor has a list of accomplishments that are remarkable for one so young he is 30 beginning with his first public recitals at age 10 and continuing to ever-increasing critical acclaim. In 1990 he was one of the first four recipients of the Gilmore Young Artists Award, a scholarship for exceptionally promising American pianists aged 22 or younger. Soon after he won the first prize in the William Kapell International Piano Competition. In 1993, he was the Bronze Medalist in the ninth quadrennial Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the first American to reach the finals of this important contest since 1981. In 1996 he was awarded a coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant, designed to give professional assistance and recognition to instrumentalists who have demonstrated potential for significant careers as soloists.

E nrique Graf was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1953. He started studying piano at the age of four with his mother and later at the Falleri-Balzo Conservatory. After winning all of the national competitions there, he came to the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University to study with Leon Fleisher on a full scholarship from the Organization of American States and the Peabody. In 1977 he and Katherine Jacobson won First Prize in the National Ensemble Two Piano Competition, the following year Mr. Graf was the First Prize winner in the William Kapell International Piano Competition and in 1981 he won the East and West International Competition in New York City. Graf has given recitals all over the world and has been featured as soloist with such orchestras as the Baltimore, Indianapolis, New Jersey, Richmond, Florida, West Virginia, Charleston, New York City and Jupiter Symphonies; the Moscow Philharmonic, the Janacek Philharmonic, the National Chamber Orchestra, the Illinois Chamber Orchestra, the American Chamber Orchestra, the Puerto Rico Symphony, and the National Orchestras of Chile, Uruguay, Panama and Colombia.
