    William Kapell in recital
    William Kapell, piano
As a preface to Kapell's letters, we begin with Dr. Dehavenon's spontaneous comments, made during her first listening to these performances after remastering. They attest to her extensive musical background: she had studied piano with Sergei Tarnowsky (one of Vladimir Horowitz's teachers) and possesses a sharp, sensitive, analytical ear. Her observations indicate what Kapell considered important and reflect her understanding of his art through the last seven years of his life.
From his initial performances, Kapell's innate musical gifts stirred listeners, attracting a devoted public and the admiration and support of the musical elite. Mieczyslaw Horszowski noted in his diary each Kapell concert he had attended, their few meetings, and his passing. The fervor which Kapell inspired throughout his career moved individuals to record many of his concert performances which otherwise would not have been preserved.
    Beethoven: Piano Concerto no. 3:
    . . . from Kapell's letters:
    On touring:
When I have a few days to prepare a recital I feel fine on stage. When I play two days after a recital I cannot but feel shaky and nervous because even my conscientiousness doesn't help then because of the time element, which is darned important. The really outstanding concerts were the ones where I had a week between to rest and study. The Brahms Sonata, Op. 5 went like a dream, but the Schubert, which was new anyway, and came two days later, was like a bad dream.

Another in Arbiter's survey of rare and unpublished sound documents from Walter Gieseking (1895-1956), the great exponent of the Franco-German repertory, here in shellacs whose audio quality varies from excellent (the 1945 Berlin radio broadcasts) to the distracting (the 1924-25 Homochord test pressings, sounding like the pianist was playing over sizzling bacon). What is quite thrilling in all this are the German pressings, since they give us Schubert new to Gieseking's discography and more resplendent Mozart and Schumann. -GL
Haydn: Cello Concerto in D major: Dvorak: Cello Concerto in B minor. Emmanuel Feuermann, cello. Malcolm Sargent, conductor, Symphony Orchestra (in the Haydn), recorded in 1935. Michael Taube conducting the Berlin State Opera Orchestra (in the Haydn), recorded in 1929 with partial alternative takes. Naxos Historical 8.110908: When the 16 year old cellist Emmanuel Feuermann went to audition for the position of professor of music at the Gurzenich Conservatory at Cologne, the secretary told him that the waiting room was strictly for teachers, not students. He got the job, but not the title of professor. Not even sublime playing could convince the academics to relinquish the title of professor to a sixteen year old boy, but they had the musical sense to welcome a genius into their midst. Feuermann went on to become one of the great cellists of the twentieth century and these recordings catch him in his prime.

Dominick Argento, considered to be America's pre-eminent composer of lyric opera, has written a consistently well-received body of instrumental and vocal works which are unusually accessible. Among other honours and awards, he has received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1975 for his song cycle, From the Diary of Virginia Woolf The two works featured here, both written after Virginia Woolf , are monodramas, meaning that they are operas involving only one singer. Arguably the finest and most frequently-recorded work of this kind is Schoenberg's Erwatung , a intensely psychological masterpiece that is not just searingly dramatic but atmospherically emotional as well.

    Aaron Copland
found himself indulged in a pretty tough feat. He explains:
The piece was not ready for the Juilliard anniversary. When it finally was premiered in late 1957 with William Masselos at the keyboard it was booed by Morton Feldman

    About Paul
    Paul Shaw , pianist
Jamaican pianist Paul Shaw has appeared in recital, chamber music and as a soloist with orchestra on three continents, inspiring appreciative audiences and music critics alike in Asia, Europe and the Americas. A top prize-winner in the 1988 William Kapell International Piano Competition and the 1986 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, he has performed to high critical acclaim at prestigious venues, including Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Beethovenhalle, Hall of the Americas and the Marlboro Music Festival. Born in Falmouth, near Montego Bay, Jamaica, Mr. Shaw's interest in music began with a toy piano his mother purchased at Woolworth's to teach him everything she had memorized from observing her guardian, a Kingston piano teacher, in secret. By age eight he was sight-reading hymns for church services, and at sixteen he won the Howard Cooke Award for Excellence in Music, Jamaica's highest classical music award in the annual Festival of Arts competition. Subsequent advanced studies, courtesy of the Jamaican Government, French Government, and William Petschek, Maro Ajemian and Isabel Mason Scholarships, led to a ten-year affiliation with noted American pianist William Masselos and three degrees - Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts - from New York's famed Juilliard School.
