William Wolfram
piano
American pianist William Wolfram has gained recognition as an artist who combines powerful Romantic instincts with a truly formidable command of the keyboard. A former Silver Medalist at both the William Kapell and Naumberg competitions as well as a Bronze Medalist at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Mr. Wolfram has drawn plaudits from critics both here and abroad for his musical integrity and compelling pianism. In the words of The New York Times, "Wolfram's technique is flabbergasting; fiendishly difficult octave passages were as child's play, and his strength is tempered by an easy poetry." For the 2001-2002 season, Mr. Wolfram has programmed both Brahms concertos, Beethoven's Second and Third concerto, Tchaikovsky's First Concerto, and Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto. A highlight of the season will be his appearance with the Dallas Symphony conducted by Andrew Litton as featured soloist in Leonard Bernstein's "Age of Anxiety". Elsewhere, Mr. Wolfram will be heard with the Green Bay Symphony (two series of concerts), the Boise Symphony, the Richmond (VA) Symphony (two series of concerts), the Canton (OH) Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra. In addition, he will be recording both piano concertos of American composer Edward Collins under the baton of Marin Alsop and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and in January will reappear with the Seattle Chamber Music Festival. He also participates in the Sanibel Island Festival and the Oregon Festival of American Music.

JOHN O'CONOR, PIANIST Through his recitals, concerto appearances, and critically acclaimed recordings, Irish pianist John O'Conor has earned a reputation as a masterful interpreter of the Classic and early Romantic piano repertoires. He has been praised for his formidable technique and through his eloquent phrasing, mastery of keyboard color and particularly his unique sound he has been called a true Poet of Piano. John O'Conor has performed in Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand and has appeared with such orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, l'Orchestre National de France, Scottish and Stuttgart Chamber Orchestras, Israel Camerata, NHK, Yomiuri, Kyushu, Kyoto and Sapporo symphonies in Japan, KBS Symphony in Seoul, Singapore Symphony, New Zealand Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Florida Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of San Francisco, Dallas, Detroit, Indianapolis, Seattle, Toronto, Montreal and Washington DC in North America. He also appears frequently with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and the Irish Chamber Orchestra in Ireland and abroad. Mr. O'Conor continues to make significant contributions to the arts in his native country through his numerous performances of music from the traditional repertoire and his championing of the works by Ireland's leading 19th century composer, John Field. He has become a key figure in the development of young artists through his role as Director of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and was a co-founder of the AXA Dublin International Piano Competition, of which he is Artistic Director and Chairman of the Jury.

John O’Conor first gained widespread attention in the United States in 1986 with the release of the initial volume of his complete recorded Beethoven sonata cycle, which was issued as a boxed set in 1994. CD Review described Mr. O’Conor’s performances of these sonatas as "piano recording of the highest caliber and Beethoven playing at its best" and went on to say, "This Beethoven series should become the complete set of choice for the next decade." Mr. O’Conor has made more than 20 recordings for Telarc International, including the complete Beethoven Bagatelles, which was cited by The New York Times as the best recording of these works; four volumes of Mozart Piano Concertos with Sir Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra; numerous works by Schubert including the A Major Piano Sonata, Op. Posth., the complete Impromptus and Waltzes, the Moments Musicaux, and the "Trout" Quintet with members of the Cleveland Quartet; and two volumes of short piano pieces. An avid proponent of the music of fellow countryman John Field, he has recorded several of the composer’s major works, including Field’s complete piano concertos and his sonatas and nocturnes. His recording of Field nocturnes was featured on Billboard’s classical charts for many weeks.

Recorded 1 December 1945[a], 26 April 1937[b], 28 October 1951[c,d]. As to the eclectic assortment of works accompanying the Shostakovich, the Largo and Rondo of Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto represent Kapell's first recording, made when he was a mere fourteen years of age. The 1937 recording shows its age, and it is not always possible to discern the finer points of Kapell's style, but his confidence is always apparent. Mussorgsky's Pictures come from lacquer discs and a preservation tape made of them, so the sound quality is very poor. The reading is characterful, though, and pianists and lay-listeners with a high tolerance for extraneous noise will find much of value. Though Kapell's live recital - just two years before his tragic death in a plane crash - of Busoni's transcription of Bach's Nun komm der Heiden Heiland was taken from shellac pressings too, the sound is infinitely better, and with playing of this ravishing beauty, it contributes towards making this disc a satisfying purchase for those with the ears to appreciate a distinctive pianistic personality.

Russian Yakov Kasman, laureate of theVan Cliburn Competition. This magnificently gifted pianist confined himself in the Russian repertoire, with Prokofiev's Second Concerto (a dazzling cadence in the fourth movement), Moussorgsky's Paintings of an Exposition (with original ideas in the enchainements), Prokofiev's Second Sonata and Shostakovich's First Concerto, very well interpreted with its alternations of tenderness and comical winks. A real master of performance showmanship
- Le Figaro
January 13, 1998 Kasman is a slight, dark, bearded man with an air of intensity and coiled energy. It must be the harnessing of that energy rather than the pianist's physical stature that accounts for the colossal amplitude of sound he can produce. This listener has seldom heard anyone, other than Garrick Ohlsson, who pours on the tone so torrentially. Not only does he have a huge sound, but he also has diabolical fleetness of fingers and pinpoint accuracy. Along with these titanium chops, though, he possesses the soul of a poet and sensibility of a painter. - Boston Globe

Born in Falmouth, near Montego Bay, Jamaica, Mr. Shaw's interest in music began with a toy piano his mother purchased at Woolworth's to teach him everything she had memorized from observing her guardian, a Kingston piano teacher, in secret. By age eight he was sight-reading hymns for church services, and at sixteen he won the Howard Cooke Award for Excellence in Music, Jamaica's highest classical music award in the annual Festival of the Arts competition. Subsequent advanced studies, courtesy of the Jamaican Government, French Government, and William Petschek, Maro Ajemian and Isabel Mason Scholarships, led to a ten-year affiliation with noted American pianist William Masselos and three degrees - Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts - from New York's famed Juilliard School.
